Hi all,

I am new to this forum and have recently bought a '99 1.6A Corolla.

Wonder if anyone can advise thru past experiences on how long typically does a timing belt needs to be changed?

Hiya,

Welcome to this humble forum. [:)]

A timing belt should generally be changed between every 70,000 to 80,000 KM. Of course, when changing the timing belt, there's also some other things you may want to consider changing at the same time too..

Please refer to the thread below for a more detail discussion...

As for your toyota, perhaps the experts can provide more details? [:)][:)]

Hi,

Welcome to MCF,

Do join us for our weekly meetup....thumbsup.gif

General rule is to change the timing belt abt every 80k

In your case, your car is more than 3 years old so it is abt time to change the timing belt...

Thanks for the advice Saaber.

My car's currently at about 91K and the last owner has mentioned that he has changed it during his most recently service few months back.

What symptoms would the car usually show (if there any) before one decides to go for a change of the timing belt?

What's the range of price to pay for a service like that at the workshop to get the necessary stuff changed in a corolla?

Rule of thumb, 60-70k for Jap cars and 100k for conti cars (perhaps contis have thicker belts?)

For your rolla, check the belt grooves and labelling, it the grooves are thick and label text still white then high chance it's relatively new. While you're checking check for hairline splits or cracks on the belt too [;)]

Hi Angelt....welcome to MCF. Try to meetup with us next week!!!

As the rest have said, 80K is the time to change. As for me, when I get a 2nd hand car, i never take chances. I will change the timing belts even if they say they have done so. most of the things i do when i get my car [ol] [*]send to mec to do full checkup [*]change all belts [*]do full servicing [*]brakes.[/ol]

my 2 cents worth. I just do trust dealers.

Hi Angelt,

I am a '99 Toyota Corolla 1.6M owner. My car has hit 90k+ and I have changed the timing belt plus some other things. It has cost me $500++ at Shell ProSev. The mechanic told me to change more items in order to save labour cost. Therefore, by changing more items, I only paid one labour cost of $130.

Now I feel save and without fear of timing belt snaped.

Happy driving.

Welcome to MCF!! Do join us at the meetup and have fun here!!

Btw... i met a guy selling Toyota parts before.. he told me... for Toyota... timing belt can change at 100,000km... based on service manual specs.... but i suggest 80,000km - 90,000km if u want to play safe. Anyway, from what i've heard... timing belt snapped wouldn't affect the engine at all... dunno how true. [sweatdrop]

I thought I'd just follow up further on this timing belt thingy...I just had the following changed:

1) Fan Belt

2) Alternator Belt

3) Power Steering Belt

4) Timing Belt

5) Timing Belt Tensioner

6) 2 Oil Seals

All original parts for about S$200.00 including labour charges!
