Neutral Newbie

hi bros & gals

just wanted to find out if anyone here in MCF is into

karting, and also into competition in M'sia.

basically, want to gather some info like costs, competition venue,

competition categories... as i would like to enter into some races

in 2007.

because after 2 years plus of leisure karting, i feel i want to

experience proper racing situation.

thanks in advance!

Neutral Newbie

hi

managed to dug up this old old thread to provide some information for anyone who wishes to get into karting

this is especially so when there's a new track that is going to start operating somewhere in Oct 2009

there're already some keen interest out there

some costs that i gathered but may change for the new track in Singapore:

1) $60/3 hrs (Arena Track Fee)

2) $80/day (mechanic fee, inclusive of 5L petrol)

3) $150/mth (storage at Arena Kart Track)

4) $300 (tyres, durability depends on how hard one drive and how well u can align it.)

cost at Plentong:

1) RM60 (Track Fee for the entire day)

2) RM100/mth (storage at Plentong Kart Track)

3) RM300/ month (membership fee)

4) S$300 (tyres as mentioned above)

there's a monthly 'race' in Plentong for everyone with their kart who is interested

and the race fee is RM100

where shld one start, it really depends....

cos to go to the track in Plentong, JB, it's a drive across the Causeway

sometimes the JAM is really mad [shocked]

in addition to that, the 'Dirt Track' road to the track will not be suited for the nice

lowered cars... <_<

(buy hey i'm crazy i think)

the new track at jurong will be easily accessible, but obviously it been in Singapore

it will be more expensive$. just think price of petrol, the diff is abt double.

cost aside, there're much pro and con on whether to kart here or in malaysia

but what's what i dun think we can say much until the local track start its operations.

that's about the cost of running it without going into the cost

of Petrol, 2T, Chain Lube, Spark Plugs..... etc

for getting started, one can look for used kart with engine which will be in the

range from S$3000 to S$7000 but it can prove very tricky to get something

good and really value for $$$

if u are not constraint by budget, a brand new chassis is about S$5000 - S$7000

buying a engine will be in the range of S$4000

the common race engine in the region is the Rotax Max FR125

u will not go wrong from getting this.

but of cos, there are other engines avail.

oh, then, if u are really sersious and/if the track operation require it

one may have to buy a proper full face helmet, suit, rib protector, gloves, shoes...

it seems a fair amount of $$$ involved.

yes, it is

so i will suggest to start slow and get the lower range of equipment

and if in a year or so, u think u want to step up and get something better

i will think, with more interest being gathered slowly, one shld be able to sell

used equipment fairly easy at a lower cost.

i hope i helped in these information (and these is true as of what i know now)

let me know if there's anything else u may want to know

and i will try to help

cheers

(wow.... time flies... it was in 2006 when i post this thread!!)

lets just say that for begineers and those on a budget...theres no better engine to start off with than the Rotax max engine!!! long life compared to the reed valves(thats what we used 2 call the 100CC ones)

Karting is an expensive hobby. Just had my first taste of it at the relatively new go kart circuit in Malacca and it was rather fun but not something I would do on a regular basis due to the number of bruises I got over the 44 laps covered!

44 laps? how's that u did 44 laps? [thumbsup]

how's the track there at Melaka?

wat kart were u using?

just thinking of going there for a karting day.

Yes, any form of motorsports can be quite painful if the equipment is not

up to par and/or is not tailored to your fitting.

i believed the one at Tuas, which is very near to the 2nd link, is manage under SMSA

been there before but had not kart on it

this track is been used by Motocross bike and kart on different days or time slots

also, earlier this year if i'm not wrong there was a fatal incident involving a biker

while riding there.

Tuas motorcross track has was up eons ago. tarmac track is rather recent. I think it was 50 dollars for 15 mins for a kart. 10 karts or so. i cant imagine 44 laps at one go on a go kart. do race karts have proper suspension? The karts i've tried has totally no suspension and i was jarring and bouncing on the rock hard seat. may faint after 20 laps lol.

as far as i know go kart of all sorts has no suspension

once if one has good proper equipment from a fitting seat, ribs protector etc

the "hittings" from the kart will be minimized

however it will not be eradicated completely as 'demonstrate' from my

rib injury recently

welcome. glad i can be of some help

do let me know if u need some pointers in getting equipment

cos kiddo's equipment really has to be correct, else it can be really dangerous

Thanks for the info Jon, I'll probably be sending my kids there, gonna bring up my own Schumacher (Michael that is, not the useless Ralf) or Tiger Woods!

race karts also no suspension?! omg! Do you get kidney protectors too like those motorcross riders? My butt isnt very fleshy and i can feel all my internal organs getting mixed up inside my body after a few laps. I think prolong exposure to such jarring forces is not good for old men like me

yes Sir, race kart also no suspension

no, we dun use kidney protector, not aware that there's such thing to begin with

[laugh]

kart do remain as a very basic form of motorsports

although i hv to say that the engine, tyres, timing equipment, chassis are quite complicated

it is why Schumi 'trained' on a kart before the supposed F1 comeback

basically, i wld say race kart is more comfortable because all of the stuff is

set up to fit the driver. [;)]

hi

wat would be your 'definition' of requirement?

there's no physical requirement.

for fun driving, i believe there's no strict requirement as long as there are karts

that fit kid

[:)]

for racing, i believed there're a set of requirement perhaps

which i'm not sure abt
