WTB Starlet

hi all,

 

actually i want to get a starlet for long term usage... not to use for another 4 yrs and scrap. but i need to consider how to get it to tip top condition so that i can extend the coe for another 10 yrs.... in 4 yrs time it will be 20 yrs and some of my friends say that its difficult to extend the coe after 20 yrs. issit true? if it is then all the money i am going to spend on it to bring it back to life will be wasted

 

they also tell me that parts will be expensive as there are few starlets nowadays... issit true?

 

the new cars nowadays are so bulky i really do not wish to own one of them. i think starlet is the coolest

 

currently my lack of knowledge about cars is my biggest obstacle

Hi bro, I am like you in many ways and had only recently purchased my starlet in Dec 06. However, many of the forumers are very willing to share their knowledge and i have learnt much from them and even from just reading these posts.

 

With regards to the starlet, in my searching i found that the starlet is one of the most economical rides around and some starlets are being sold which have already reached 20 years. If these are presently renewed for another 10 years, this gives me the impression that there would still be demand for parts in the next 5 to 7 years. In addition, starlets are also found in Malaysia and as such, parts can also be sourced from our neighbouring country.

 

My starlet will end its COE in 4+ years time and it is definitely my intention to renew its COE for another 5 to 10 years depending on my assessment of the situation then. But meanwhile, i think the choice of a starlet is definitely worth considering and the depriciation is generally only pegged to the COE value unlike a brand new or second car which is less than 10 years old.

In terms of knowledge, the MCF starlet folders has all you need to know as it covers a broad range of things asked and contributed by us over the last 3 years or so. Just take your time to go through the different threads. Most starlet bros are also considering extending COE so not to worry, we'll surely be able to source for parts.

same as u i knw little about cars, so have to read alot and lsiten more from ppl to see various opinions, wif regard to ur questions,

yeah this is a very friendly and helpful forum. thought i was making a big mistake checking out starlet cos almost all my friends were against me getting a starlet reason being cars r very cheap nowadays. it was like only i was able to see something in this car which they can't see. whenever i spoke enthusiastically about it they would just shake their heads. after i joined this forumn things have changed. the people here have similar taste and more importantly active... and i'm more determined than ever to get one!!!

 

since starlet is cheaper it only means that i'll have plenty of cash for improvements

 

then i'll show them who is boss

Just a word of caution; being a 15 year old car, look into the safety aspects first such as the brakes, tyres, driveshaft, brearings...etc first before you decide to beef your performance.

tink most prob wif starlet maybe it is engine oil eating behavior

but can be solve easily wif little $$$

but overall i can say toyota reali make great engines bah, 15 yrs car in S'pore are mostly toyota, i see it everyday, corona, cd, corolla, even a few celica GT and mr2 still zooming ard...

 

yeah bro... same problem here.. mostly its the Gasket near the pulleys

 

... May be changing ride year end... thinking of SW20 or GT4.... dunno... still deciding..

i was also eyeing the celica GT, at ard $35k,

for a 2 litre turbo-charged, 200hp, 2 doors 'supra' look-a-like,

but the road tax and insurance is going to kill mi lor...

 

maybe if got $$$ in future, may eye for a MR-S....

but insurnace also kill mi as well...

Yup both are killers. I saw a Celica road tax is based on 2k road tax range per year.... Not every1 can tahan the payment thou.

yeah.. just the insurance will die liao!! But the car is really something.. the 3S-GTE is very well known as an engine more superior than the rest in 1994.
