Gain/freqency settings on active sub

Frequency should cut off where your front components could not hit. Typically good pair of components can hit about 50Hz or so. So you can set your frequency cut off about 50-60Hz.

 

As for the gain, can your HU control sub volume? If can then you can put your sub gain to around 3/4 and then control from the HU. If not then you have to adjust until you find the bass sufficient.

Nope.. you need to do gain matching of your HU sub level to match your volume control of your sub.

 

You need to play a 'strong bass' track to repeat that same track while you do gain matching for your sub.

 

For example if this is your HU volume control. Set your HU volume control to 2/3 of the max.

Max: 62 if this is your max.

Loud:41 - 2/3 of max

Norm:21 - 1/3 of max.

 

First, lower your volume control on your sub. Then go to your HU.. At 2/3 of the HU volume, at 41, you play just your 'strong bass' track. Then you slowly raise the volume of your sub until you hear flutter/distortion from your sub. Lower that down a little until you hear no distortion. That is your max volume of your sub to match your HU at 2/3 of max.

For me, my volume control for sub is max at 15. So I put the sub volume between 10-12. And then increase the sub gain till I get the bass that I want.

 

In the above instance, if some tracks are less in bass, you can increase the sub volume. If too much bass, you can reduce the sub volume.
