Neutral Newbie

hi bros here, would like to check. im driving a toyota vios, when my car was raised up on the lifter. i can see the following setup below clearly

Extractor --- cataylic convertor --- center muffler --- piping all the way to rear muffler

my question is, wat does the center muffler do. does it serve any purpose like back pressure, lowering exhaust volume or juz purely for silencing the pipe?

most cases the rear so-called muffler is usually a restrictor c/w double u-turn piping inside. The center piece is the real muffler and straight-thru.....dun touch it. Pple usually mod the rear muffler.[nod]

it may too late but..

the center muffler (also referred to as the main muffler or silencer) is where the actual noise cancellation takes place. Driving with noise blasting the interior is a very unpleasant thing. No one will be able to tolerate it for a long period of time, unless you intend to showcase your engine noise.. [;)]

Planning to change both the mufflers to fit a custom pipe and headers.

Very very hard to find an exact sized muffler. Likely will have to modify pipe

instead and get a bigger centre and muffler.

yea if you cant find it modify the pipe then you can install the center muffler later. sometimes these mufflers provide a whizzing sound. :)

Purpose of center muffler is to reduce noise. Some cars have to put 2 center mufflers in series because they use illegal straight thru and its too loud.....
