I seem to see on the net that many alfa owners in eu/us are dragged to the side of the road many times due to problems with the selespeed system. Can any alfa owners enlighten mi on whats going on? Are these happening to u pple?

I'm driving my 2nd 156 and this selespeed problem doesn't really happen to me. IMHO, I think with regular servicing and driving the 156 in a correct manner should minimize the problem.

Any 156 owners would like to comment on this.

Hmm... funny, well just to clarify... US of A does not have Alfa Romeo 156, thus, no Selespeed there.

The first generation of Selespeed (system, includes actuator, ECU programme .. etc.) does have some glitches.... actuator seal leaking selespeed oil is the main culprit. Other minor ones are program error which could be rectified by going to the agent and have it re-programmed. The 2nd generation ones are quite problem free, while the 3rd generation ones are the smoothess.

I believe those who has seen the revolution of car technology would agree that every new gadget invented would have their initial woes. INVECS, CVT... and if you pop into the BMW forum, you would hear complains about the SMG (similar to Alfa's Selespeed).

Utilizing the Selespeed needs some getting use to. Some would love it, others would rather select "city mode" or swear by a full automatic tranny.

Well I can assure you that seeing a broken down AR 156 or 147 by the road side is extremely rare (I have not seen any so far), if the car is well taken care of, like any other makes.

just my 2 cents worth.... cheers. [;)]

Hi Guano,

I'm the 2nd owner of my first 156. It was registered in 1999. When I took over the car early last year, it has already clocked 100 000km. Not only the selespeed doesn't give me problems but gave me alot of fun instead. Can't resist the fun, I plunged into a new 156 last week and never look back since.

I do my regular sevicing every 10 000km without fail plus I will defintely do an ad-hoc servicing if I drive up to KL/Genting which will happen at least twice a month before the SARS outbreak.

As for driving habits, I learnt alot from the Alfa owners. Things like Never move in 2nd gear from halt. Change of gears when necessary etc.

Honesty, I have more satisfaction driving the 156 than my all my previous cars.

My 2 cents worth......

I'm into the end of the 3rd year of ownership of my 156. Selespeed gave problem once (actuator) but was settled by the agent.

I said I had a Selespeed problem, I didn't say it's BAD. Second, I didn't say my car broke down either. [:p]

Other problems, if you can call these problems.........

1) Jealousy from wife.

2) High tyre wear.

3) High brake pad wear.

4) High brake disc wear.

5) High mileage due to the need to drive.

Cheers!
