  1. In June 2006, Koua Fong Lee was driving his pregnant wife and other family members home from church when he says his 1996 Toyota Camry accelerated on its own and the brakes stopped working. Lee struck another vehicle, killing three people in that car. A Minnesota jury convicted Lee of vehicular homicide and the native of Laos was sentenced to an eight-year prison sentence even though there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs involved in the incident. Fast-forward to over three years later, and Toyota's recall woes for unintended acceleration are casting doubt on the jury's decision to convict Lee. But while the 1996 Camry isn't involved in the current recall, some 1996 models were recalled for unintended acceleration. Further, ABC News says that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received at least 17 other complaints of unintended acceleration in 1996 Camrys with comments like "couldn't stop" and "had to crash into a tree and another car to stop." Brent Schafer, the lawyer for Lee, has asked for a new trial, and for his client to be set free until the time of a new hearing. The prosecution in the case told ABC News that it supports examining the 1996 Camry involved in the crash to determine if the car is at fault instead of Lee. For its part, Toyota has chosen not to comment to ABC News due to the fact that there could be a future lawsuit brought against the company.

  3. There could finally be some relief for residents and shopkeepers near the Block 17 Upper Boon Keng Road Market and Food Centre who have been plagued by the traffic congestion in the area. In response to TODAY's queries, a spokesperson from the Housing and Development Board (HDB), which manages the two car parks surrounding the market and food centre, said it would be exploring with the relevant agencies the possibility of creating another access point to ease the congestion. It is also considering installing a display panel to show the number of vacant lots available at the various areas within the surface car park and the multi-storey car park, to help motorists better utilise parking lots and reduce unnecessary vehicular movement. The display panel is not a standard feature and is currently installed at only four other HDB car parks. "Meanwhile, as an interim measure, we are working with the (Electronic Parking System) service provider to deploy their staff to regulate the traffic condition during lunchtime," the HDB spokesperson said. The estate, which is surrounded by offices and factories, experiences strong demand for parking and heavy traffic, particularly during lunchtime on weekdays. It has only one lane each for motorists entering and exiting and a single access EPS gantry between Block 11 and Block 18. Lorries and vans delivering goods during that period also contribute to the bottleneck. Residents and patrons of the food centre TODAY spoke to said it can take up to 15 minutes to get out of the car park. A resident of 16 years in the estate, who wished to be known as Richard, was also concerned about emergency services gaining access into the estate. He said: "What happens if someone is sick or if there is a fire? There are a lot of elderly people living here and an ambulance can't be stuck for more than 10 minutes just trying to get out of a car park." The HDB spokesperson said it was aware of the situation and that it has also received various suggestions from residents to help ease traffic congestion. "However, these suggestions need careful consideration and may not all be feasible for implementation. For instance, some residents have suggested widening the road leading to the EPS gantry to ease the traffic bottleneck. However, based on our assessment, there are technical and site constraints which prevent us from doing so." Another suggestion was to implement a flat rate for parking or to raise the barrier and offer free parking during peak periods but such a move could cause "further congestion" as it encourages motorists to park their cars for longer periods, the spokesperson said. "The EPS system, which charges motorists by per minute parking, is more effective in increasing the turnover of vehicles to minimise the congestion within the car parks." In 2009, the EPS was implemented at the two car parks to "better regulate" short-term parking demand from visitors

  5. Hi MCF bro/sis, For those who park their cars in open shelter carparks in HDB with season parking pass, does your carpark has those red lots with "NO PARKING" sign? 1. What happens if one parks there due to insufficient parking lots? 2. Which is a more severe offence: parking in these red lots or parking along double yellow lines in the carpark? For really congested carparks, when you return home & cannot find a space, if you have to choose between parking along double yellow lines and such red "NO PARKING" lots, which will you choose?

Since the part on the experience of the overseas grad is taken from TR, I will leave it to you to your judgments to its authenticity What is most interesting is the part highlighted in red Did not know the HK govt will go to the full extent of performing all the necessary checks to ensure employers only employ foreigners because they have got no choice to protect the interests of the locals there. Any bros familiar with HK or it's policies can advice if this is true? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...me_anymore.html Posted on 20 Jan 2012 Woes of an overseas grad: S'pore doesn't feel like home anymore STOMPer Alex shares the experiences of a Singaporean overseas grad, who found it tough getting a job both overseas and locally. 8. ST Forum Couple raring to start family face housing woes LIKE Mr Lim Chong Wee, I too cannot realise my dreams of owning an HDB flat ("Stuck in housing limbo despite higher ceiling"; last Wednesday). I bought a small private studio apartment about five years ago when I was single and below 35 years old. The flat is under my name. However, I got married last year and am seeking to move to a bigger place for my wife and myself. We are both Singaporeans and we wanted to apply for a bigger matrimonial flat jointly to start a family. I have been trying to sell my current apartment at valuation so as to be eligible for an executive condominium (EC). However, HDB rules state that you have to wait 30 months after selling your property. Why is there a need for this 30-month clause? Where does the HDB expect us to live in the interim? Do they expect us to join the already heated-up rental market and rent a flat while waiting out the 30 months? The EC itself takes a few years to complete and that would further extend our waiting time. B. Elamaaran
  9. I went to watch a movie at Vivocity this afternoon. The movie was assigned a small cinema and the back rows are filled up. 15 mins into the show, this two stupid young men sitting on my left start opening a large packet of dried cuttlefish and started to eat. Dried CUTTLEFISH.... Smelly SOTONG. See bei smelly. Can you imagine how bad it smelled inside the enclosed space of the cinema. My friends on my right started covering their noses and someone in the row in front of me stiffled a retch. After 2 mins I also cannot tahan...looked angrily at him, said "hoi...that damm thing is very smelly. Have some consideration can?" He is lucky that he and his friend immediately kept back the plastic bag of smelly stuff...if he has protested I might just give him a punch for being so inconsiderate. I think maybe because i look so guailan and ready to whack people. Throughout the show I can still smell some whiffs of the dried sotong smell from their mouth. ccb. No ugly endings here and lucky things did not escalate further. Any bros or sis here with bad encounters inside the cinemas?
  10. Feb 16, 2011 Housing woes mar bundles of joy MY HUSBAND and I welcomed our twin girls last year, and our brood doubled to four children, which forced us to hire a second maid. Our 75 sq m flat, the smallest four-roomer in our area, could no longer accommodate what was effectively a family of eight, including the domestic help. So we went through the usual HDB flat-hunting process, applying for build-to-order flats and balance flats, but we could not secure a ballot number. We then went resale flat hunting, but the high cash-over-valuation and the lower loan amounts offered by the bank because of HDB's new rules meant that we had to fork out at least $80,000. To meet the requirements of the new rules, we would have had to sell our current flat and move to a rental flat before we could go resale flat hunting. This would entail us moving house twice, with four young children in tow, in order to upgrade to a bigger flat. It proved too hard and we had to abandon the idea. I then appealed to the HDB to sell us a flat on its list of leftover five-room flats in our vicinity, but it did not reply. I sought the help of my MP to appeal on my family's behalf. After four letters of appeal, the Housing Board replied that it had only a limited number of returned five-room flats, and our case was not special enough to warrant HDB to look into it. So while I would love to encourage Singaporeans to have more children, I am forced by my experience to advise them to think twice. Our parents' generation enjoyed the possibility of upgrading to a bigger HDB flat to accommodate a bigger family. That avenue does not appear to be available anymore for my husband and me, and our generation. With limited supply of new flats and competition in the resale market, the HDB's priority is given to first-timers and not upgraders. If we could have turned back the clock, my husband and I would have stopped at two, because having more children means less space at home. Lim Yu Hong (Madam) Wow, 75 sqm 4 rm flat, smaller than a 4s model. Actually wat's the big deal in shifting house 2 times? I'm guessing HDB wl reply her and say they can apply for another HDB loan then can do contra blah blah blah...
  11. Poor innocent woman. Did everything under the law-see MP & report police, even incurring own expense of installing CCTV but still kena harrassed...What more can she do? http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_625645.html Innocent loan-shark victim's 3-year tale of endless woes I AM an unfortunate owner who bought a three-room flat from a loan-shark borrower three years ago. I have been harassed by loan sharks until today because the previous owner had not changed his address on his identity card. I have lodged several police reports but the only assurance the police offered me was that they would increase the patrols around my block. Desperate, I sought the assistance of my MP, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, last November. He promised to raise the matter with the police, but the only additional response I received from the police, apart from the previous assurance of increased patrols, was a question: Would I be installing a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera? Meanwhile, the loan sharks did not let up and visited my flat regularly. Last week alone, I lodged three police reports, the most serious of which was about my family and I being locked in with a bicycle lock, and our front door splashed with red and black paint. The police had to be called to release the lock. Subsequently, an investigating officer was assigned to the case, but the only response I received from him was the same: The police would increase their patrols. The next day, a loan shark called and threatened to burn my flat if I did not track down the previous owner. He also threatened to harm my daughter and my maid, claiming that he had their photographs. I reported this also to the investigating officer and after receiving the same reply, I asked him to facilitate the installation of a CCTV camera at my lift landing. He told me to check with the Bedok North police centre and when I did, I was told to obtain approvals from the Housing Board and the town council. Only then would the CCTV camera be installed, at my own cost. The reason I am writing in is that I have done all that I could but question whether the police have done likewise. I have faithfully lodged reports with the police, and installed a CCTV camera, but I have not seen a more visible police presence. I am not updated by the police and all that the police have done effectively is to record my statements. I am baffled and frustrated. On the one hand, a serial loan-shark borrower could escape harassment by the simple act of not changing his address; and a loan shark could obtain all my personal details. On the other, the police have apparently been unable to track down the previous owner, let alone the loan shark. Eng Lay Qing (Ms)
  12. Hello all. I had been driving with intermittent ABS warning light lit in my Toyota Allion (1st hand, bought in Mar 2010). My ride is pure stock, without any mods. At the 1st occurrence, I thought it was just one of those electrical mechanics which would be easily resolved if I switched off and on my engine again. In the initial few tries, it worked. But the problem persisted, esp when i turn at bends (traffic junctions at normal turning speeds) and remained lit throughout the journey. I must qualify that there was no issue in my brakings during the time when the ABS LIT. Hence, I did the following: - 1st visit: send to workshop to clean brake switch. Told by mechanic to drive and return if it appears again (which it did). - 2nd visit: diagnosed by a computer that there was a bug that was reset in the system. Also this diagnosis revealed 'incorrect brake switch co-relation'. Told by mechanic to drive and return if it appears again (which it did). The next return would be to change the brake switch. - 3rd visit: diagnosed as techical fault and brake swicth replaced. Between the 2 days of my 2nd-3rd visit, the issue got complicated whereby if i signal left light and does a slow brake, I could feel the pull of the ABS and a few jerks. The circuitry seemed involved now. I just had a brake switch replaced and the ABS light problem did not recur as often as before although it appeared once when I returned after an evening apptmt. I am thinking of gg back to workshop (which I dun trust) or back to Borneo Motors to resolve such issue. Therefore, can i seek all bros and sis who had experienced such mild trauma in your Allion ride. I had read somewhere that Hanip Automobiles is good in diagnosing such faults and resolving them. It is one of my options for next week. Am at wits end...
  13. Normally I dont have time or energy to wash car myself, so i go to those petrol station ones. Tried all liao, SPC, caltex, shell... they all have the same problem. When after wash drying up the car, they opened the boot by using their hand to lift by the spoiler. All the car wash people i know seem to do it and i fear my expensive spoiler getting cracked or bent. They dont understand the value and i sympathize with that as it is very cheap labour. Finally found one caltex that didnt lift my boot like that. Just now went to queue 30 mins and wait for my turn to wash. End up after wash instead of closing the boot he just tap the boot + spoiler and it drop down hard breaking the lock. He didnt even notice anything wrong with doing that and they dry up using foam instead of cloth. Where do you go to wash your car and does this kind of thing happen alot to you ? Thanks In Advance.
  14. If u think tours are those that appears AFTER an accident on the spot, then u may be wrong. If u guys had seen teh video of my accident, a few days after the incident, I got a call from a lady who is purportedly from a company called N*vo accident Recovery. Apparently, she got my number from the accident report of the Kia Cerato Forte (last Car in teh chain collision, I was 2nd). I was, of course, upset. I knew the owner went back to CnC to have his car repaired. Henceforth, the 'mole' must be in CnC and that person must be feeding these punks with PnC information of accident parties. Secondly, the car involved in the accident was my 2nd car. I am now due for renewal for my main car, which is an Evo X. When my broker solicited for quotes, all she got were DECLINEs. This is because of my recent accident for my 2nd car. Why is that so? Isnt insurance pegged to the car itself and not the person? Si bei sien.
  15. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_560829.html see la.. complain so much... now HdeeBee parking at night become $4 TO BETTER manage the demand for parking spaces at Housing Board (HDB) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) carparks, night parking charges will go up from $2 to $4 from Nov 1. But the current half-hour night parking rate remains at 50 cents, said the HDB and URA in a joint statment on Monday. 'Currently, most NPS carparks are heavily used due to higher parking demand. This has resulted in residents with season parking ticket facing difficulties in getting a parking space when they return home at night,' they explained. The parking charge revision will safeguard the interests of season ticket holders and better manage the parking demand at these car parks, added the HDB and URA. The night parking scheme, which provides overnight parking facilities for non-resident motorists and visitors in HDB and URA car parks, was implemented in carparks where there were adequate parking spaces to meet season parking needs. The new $4 night parking coupons will be on sale from Oct 15. Motorists holding the $2 night parking coupons can continue to use them by displaying two $2 coupons.
  16. Will it ever stop? Yo, we don't know. And yes, we're quoting Vanilla Ice because... well, at this point in the never ending Toyota tale of woe, why not? Anyhow, there have been 83 complaints about the power steering systems in 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corollas, most of which are claiming that the car will veer to the right or left at speeds over 40 mph. Coincidently, the Corolla is one of the eight Toyota models affected by the production and sales stoppage. The alleged problems have purportedly caused 10 accidents and six injuries. Here's the gist: Complainants have compared the movement to being buffeted by strong winds, sliding on black ice, or hydroplaning. They said that after trying to straighten the car, it can overcorrect -- requiring the driver to use a tight, persistent, two-handed grip on the wheel to travel in a straight line. Of course, you should always have a tight, persistent, two-handed grip on the wheel. That's known as driving. Not that people aren't actually experiencing problems with late model Corollas, but this kinda reminds us of the Seattle Windshield Pitting Epidemic. If you don't know, in the 1950s Seattleites began complaining en masse about pits (or holes) appearing in their windshields. Everything from hoodlums with BB guns to sand flea eggs to a million watt radio antenna to atomic testing were thought to be maybe causing the pitting. Also, shifts in the earth's magnetic field and even gremlins (the fictional creatures, not the AMC product) were blamed. Finally, after a full investigation Seattle Police Sergeant Max Allison announced that the windshield pitting was, "5 per cent hoodlum-ism, and 95 per cent public hysteria." This happened on April 15, 1954. All reports of windshield pitting stopped on April 17. Is this related to reports about the Corolla's power steering ills? More closely than we might think, we think. UPDATE: There might be a little fire under all this smoke. Our friends at AOL Autos have also been reporting on this breaking story, and have discovered this: " notice the steeering wheel sometimes pulses only when my cell phone is...docked to the right of the steering wheel," wrote one Corolla driver in an official complaint on June 26, 2009. "It's strange I can sometimes tell if my Blackberry is going to ring or get an email. The steering wheel seems to shake or try to steer on its own. This is similar to my other 2009 Toyota Corolla that I resold to the dealer. I wonder if more shielding is needed to reduce any interference." If that's the case, we take back what we said about Seattle.
  17. Hello everyone, Replaced timing belt and accessory belts in January and have already went back to workshop once for adjustments. The squeaking problem is back again. This time its a squeak sound followed by metal pinging noise which goes away after about 30 secs. It also squeaks and pings intermittently when throttle is applied, this stops when engine warms up. Is it caused by belt tension issues again? Noticed a drop in power and increased FC as well. Thanks.
  18. US woes: S'pore may be worst hit Wed, Dec 03, 2008 The Straits Times By Alvin Foo SINGAPORE is likely to be the Asian economy that is worst affected by a United States recession, said economists. This is because it is one of the most open economies and has a large manufacturing sector. They were commenting a day after the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) - a private, non-profit research body - concluded that the US has been in recession since December last year. Unusually, the NBER does not define a recession as two straight quarters of shrinking economic output. Instead, it looks for a decline in economic activity, spread across the economy, and lasting more than a few months. The figures it uses include overall economic output, industrial production, payroll employment, personal incomes, and wholesale and retail trade.
  19. Got this from the Legacy forum.. bro Oreo found it. Enjoy
  20. Hi bros, Have been having this steering wheel problem since few months ago, decided to fix it since its getting kinda irritating. Problem is when cruising straight on the expressway, the steering wheel position is at 11 o'clock. I do not have any bosskit installed, my steering wheel is stock. It happened after I done my alignment. I don't think its tram-lining because the tyres is new when I done my alignment. I called one workshop to enquire, mech told me to let go the straight wheel see if the car will veer to the left/right. Car tracks perfectly straight... Can I conclude that alignment is ok, problem is the steering wheel position ? If yes, where can I go to adjust my steering wheel without altering the alignment ? Thanks alot for your time Cheers !
  21. Wanna lease your car? it's illegal and it may add to your problem. anyway this is also another example why 10 yr loan will make it worse if you are in financial difficulties http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Story/STIStory_249334.html
  22. Bros and sis of MCF, a sample poll for those who had this problem, please indicate what the faulty component was in your case. NOTE: Option 4 is just for fun! http://www.todayonline.com/articles/252411.asp
  23. Here's a tribute to "Lemon Tree":- I wonder why Car so "Cheap" I wonder why Petrol so "Cheap" La la la la I wonder why cashcard are slotted just before ERP gantry I wonder why pple so kaypoh when they see accidents La la la la I wonder how pple donno how to park their car I wonder how they get their license in the first place La la la la Sometimes I become Parking Idiot because of 2 Goondus on my left and right And I start to get paranoid in case I become a "Star" on Stomp La la la la And that is not bad enough, cos sometimes I have to crawl to my seat from the rear But Parking Idiot please try to understand, my car is 4 door La la la la So if you want me to crawl at least allow me to open my door Don't push me to sabo your ride La la la la Or I will put the following notices on my ride:- I am sorry if you are inconvenienced by my parking style. I am trying my best to park within my lot and in a centre position (if i am in the middle lot). I am trying my best to park nearer to pillar to give more space to the one in the middle (if i am in the left/right lot). And definitely away from the white lines. And ensure you have space to open your door without you resorting to purposely leaving dents/scratches to show your pleasure over my parking handicap. I had no choice to park this manner as before you, my left and right neighbours parked in such a manner that left me no choice but to be a Parking Star on Stomp. I gave them benefits of doubt as they might have encountered similar problem where they had to crawl in/out of the car like me after they have parked. Are you Proud of your Ride? Are you Proud of your Parking Ability? Don't be Proud to show it Unless you want to be a Star on Stomp And labelled a Parking Idiot
  24. i choose not to service my car at the AD because they refuse to allow me to BYO oil. today i went to a workshop with my own supplied air filter, oil filter, engine oil and gear oil to replace my engine oil, gear oil and air filter. I was charged $50 for the labour. is it reasonable? is there a good workshop around that stocks genuine kia parts and uses high quality grp 4 and above engine oil in their servicing packages?
  25. Yo bros, I'm actually driving a Colt Plus Turbo (CVT) and just installed Blitz Single Solenoid EBC and sard BOV. I encountered no problems on the first day of using the EBC. Mechanic at Imperial Concepts did a few test runs and configured 4 suitable settings for me. The next day however I got into some problems. Just now while driving home at 2am, after switching EBC to setting 4, which is the highest boost, I was still lingering at 0.6 bar even though I was increasing throttle. Stock boost max out at 0.5 bar. Initial first day test runs showed that I could hit 0.9 bar pretty easily. This evening at about 10pm, I could hit 1.0 bar easily all of a sudden but after several successful attempts at getting that "throw-back" feeling in my seat, boost gauge showed turbo max out at 0.6+ bar. What could be the problem(s) here? Need help to solve this... Would appreciate any advice or suggestions... Thanks lots
