  3. Totally agree with this guy. Time to clean up and get rid of foreign trash. ST Forum Mar 1, 2011 HIRING SINGAPOREANS FIRST 'Foreign' doesn't always mean 'talent' WHILE I agree that Singapore needs foreigners to stay competitive, there are levels of foreign talent ('Levy hike 'not a push for locals''; last Thursday). At a basic level, there is a need for work permit and S Pass holders in the service, construction and manufacturing industries, given the shrinking population and comparative lack of appeal for these sectors among most Singaporeans. There should be some control to mitigate the negative effects of attracting foreigners at this level, like falling productivity; and this year's Budget has started to address this issue with the revised levy. However, when it comes to foreign talent on employment passes, are we certain that Singaporeans who graduate from one of the best education systems anywhere are unable to fill such vacancies? As much as we need multinational companies (MNCs) to invest and create jobs here, there must be a delicate balance to reap the optimum benefits of combining local and foreign talent. To achieve optimum balance, the Government should have a process of checks to manage the quantity and quality of white-collar foreign talent. I have been working in MNCs for more than 26 years and my experience informs me that it is not always the case that the foreign help is cleverer or more productive than his Singaporean equivalent. In fact, there are many Singaporeans who are better and cheaper. In fairness, I have also worked with talented and experienced foreign managers from whom I have learnt much. However, it is troubling when the term 'foreign' becomes synonymous with 'talent', though that is not always so. James Ang
  4. yahoo reported : Top-secret exposé: Singapore helping US spy on Malaysia The Malay Mail Online – 48 minutes ago KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Neighbouring Singapore is a key partner of the “5-Eyes” intelligence group which was revealed to have tapped telephones and monitored communications networks in Kuala Lumpur, according to more top secret documents leaked by intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden. In a report by Australian media group Fairfax Media today quoting Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad, it was revealed that Singapore is a key “third party” providing the ring — made of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — access to Malaysia’s communications channel. Singapore was included in a map published by NRC, which showed the US’ stranglehold on trans-Pacific communications channels through interception facilities on the US’ West coast, Hawaii and Guam. The facilities, in turn, tap all cable traffic across the Pacific Ocean, and links between Australia and Japan. In August, Fairfax had reported that the Singaporean intelligence is a partner of Australia’s electronic espionage agency, the Defence Signals Directorate, to tap the SEA-ME-WE-3 cable that runs from Japan, via Singapore, Djibouti, Suez and the Straits of Gibraltar to Northern Germany. This access was allegedly facilitated by Singaporean telecommunication operator Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), which is owned by Singapore government’s investment arm Temasek Holdings. Singapore’s head of civil service Peter Ong, who had previously been in charge of national security and intelligence co-ordination in its prime minister’s office, is the government’s representative on the telco firm’s board. It is believed that SingTel had been responsible in expanding the ties between Australia and Singapore’s intelligence and defence in the past 15 years, said the report. According to Fairfax, Malaysia and Indonesia had been key targets for both Australian and Singaporean intelligence even since the 1970s, since most of its telecommunications and Internet traffic goes through the island city-state. Last month, Snowden had revealed that the US runs a monitoring station in its Kuala Lumpur embassy to tap telephones and monitor communications networks. more stories, link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/top-secret-expos-singapore-helping-us-spy-malaysia-052600023.html Knowing our neighbours, they will not let it goes down quietly ..... 6. Since the part on the experience of the overseas grad is taken from TR, I will leave it to you to your judgments to its authenticity What is most interesting is the part highlighted in red Did not know the HK govt will go to the full extent of performing all the necessary checks to ensure employers only employ foreigners because they have got no choice to protect the interests of the locals there. Any bros familiar with HK or it's policies can advice if this is true? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...me_anymore.html Posted on 20 Jan 2012 Woes of an overseas grad: S'pore doesn't feel like home anymore STOMPer Alex shares the experiences of a Singaporean overseas grad, who found it tough getting a job both overseas and locally. The overseas grad says Singapore doesn't feel like home anymore because of the large numbers of foreigners here. Says the STOMPer: "From a Singaporean overseas graduate... "| The Singaporean overseas graduate wrote in to the TR Emeritus website, and these are excerpts from her entry: "I feel that this whole
  7. STOMPer Elicia sent in this video of a cabby who was ranting angrily at a customer, because he did not have change for the customer's $50 note. Says the STOMPer: "An angry taxi driver. 8. STOMPer Karen said a foreign woman, who was apparently a Chinese national, refused to give way to an elderly woman on a bus who was about to alight. The STOMPer said the foreign woman was also rude to the elderly passenger. The STOMPer, who took a video of the incident, said: "This happened this morning (Nov 16). "The bus was crowded and the elderly woman wanted to move to the back of the bus as she was going to alight soon. "But the China woman was standing up and blocking the way, even though there was empty seat in front of her. "When the elderly auntie asked the foreign woman to either sit down or move in to the back so that she could make her way to the door, the younger woman ignored her. "The woman sat down when the auntie asked her a second time, but she later started to argue because she wasn't happy about being told to sit down. "The auntie told her that she shouldn't be rude, as she is in Singapore, and the foreign woman replied that she lives in Singapore too. "When the old woman was about to alight, the foreign woman told the auntie that just because she's old, it doesn't mean that she has to give way to her."
  9. Smelly Gambler Doesn't Bathe For 6 Days in an attempt to Stink the crouipers into submission... A Singaporean retiree spent six days straight gambling at the tables of Resorts World casino last month. That includes going without showers or change of clothes for her marathon casino sessions, as well as just "coffee and Milo" to keep her going. After all, she slept roughly just four hours a day during her gambling binge. The New Paper reports that Madam Alice Tan, 64, lost $12,000 over the six-day session. The mother of four also revealed the reason why she refused to shower and insisted on going to the casino day after day: a fortune teller had told her she would strike it rich as her "fortune star would be at its brightest" a week before Chinese New Year, which fell on Feb 3 and 4 this year. "No need for fresh change of clothes; I just wet the towel, clean-rub and then use the deodorant," she said. "What for (use shower facilities)? It may wash away my luck. Anyway who cares about smell because most times I'd be on the smoking floor since I smoke," she said. "Instead of fresh underwear, I just change panty-liners," she added. She also told the paper that her six-day binge was her longest ever and most times, she would spend only "two to three days maximum at either RWS or Marina Bay Sands." She also revealed how she only needs an hour's nap a day when gambling and can sleep anywhere in the casino, including her own car or along the casino's walkways. When she's "really too tired", she would move from the gambling tables to the jackpot machines which "no need to use brain power... just hit the button and depend on luck". Otherwise, her favourite game was baccarat and that she usually bet between $500 to $1000 per hand. She set her loss limit at $20,000 per trip. Madam Tan, who lives in a four-room HDB flat in Simei, said her eldest son -- an architect -- paid the annual $2,000 membership for her at both RWS and MBS. She also gets a monthly allowance of $5,800 from her four children. Despite being on a losing streak since last July, she said she "can still afford it" and as long as she doesn't gamble on credit, "I won't have to worry about running up debts". When contacted, her eldest son said he and his three siblings "are aware of and don't mind our mother's hobby." Madam Tan is part of a group of punters who can spend days on a gambling binge. Just last month, a South Korean research fellow from the National University of Singapore was thought to be missing only for it to be revealed later that he had spent 16 days straight at MBS and had never left the premises.

  21. Rafa Benitez had signed a new deal with the yankees bosses to manage Liverpool until 2013 worth 16 million pound as reported in today New Paper...... Just how Liverpool going to improve with his rafalution rotation policy, I wonder .... KNN ...... how can he says these even before the match against Hull City .... .... see ESPN report ..... Latest ESPN Soccernet news as reported before the weekend clashes with Hull City. Benitez doubts Liverpool title credentials Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez believes that his Premier League leaders can only win the title if Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal fail to mount a decent challenge. Speaking ahead of his team's clash with Hull City on Saturday the Spaniard also said he considered Liverpool to be a small club compared to the "bigger" clubs of England's established top four. Benitez said: "For us to win the league we need Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal to mess up their season. It is very rare that three teams all mess up." Liverpool are one point clear of second-placed Chelsea and six ahead of Manchester United, who have a game in hand, with Arsenal in fourth, eight points off the pace. Prior to joining Liverpool in 2004, Benitez won the La Liga title with Valencia and the Spaniard can see parallels with the Reds' challenge this season. "For me, Valencia and Liverpool are similar - for them to win, the bigger clubs have to do badly," Benitez said. "When I won La Liga with Valencia that's what happened, Real Madrid and Barcelona were in transition, so it was easier." But Benitez has charged his team with building a lead at the top of the Premier League now that the Champions League is on a winter break. 23. Two days ago, I tried unsuccessfully to connect my Acer laptop to my 40" Samsung LCD TV, which I bought for more than six months ago -- so it's not the latest model. Thinking that the PC input has malfunctioned, I called for warranty service the following morning. To my pleasant surprise, they could attend to me on the next day -- which is today. Good service, I must say! When the guys came and saw my Acer laptop, one of them mentioned to his colleague that they had a similar problem with another customer. Anyway, when they couldn't get my laptop to work on the TV, they used theirs to verify that the PC input was OK -- it was. Upon further prompting, I learnt that it seemed only Acer laptops have this problem with LCD TV. By the way, my laptop is using the ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphic card. I didn't find out which card the other customer was using. I was too distraught with the finding. Sigh...
  24. The CashCard reader in labour chief Lim Swee Say's car beeps four to six times a day. This is because he passes through that many Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries along busy city roads to get to and from work. He was driving home the point that ERP exists solely to control road congestion and not to enrich government coffers or raise the cost of living for Singaporeans. Mr Lim was responding to a question at a dialogue on why the Government was raising ERP rates by as much as $2 and adding five new gantries from July 7 in a climate of rising inflation. The new gantries along the banks of the Singapore River bring the total number of gantries islandwide to 65. Mr Lim said Transport Minister Raymond Lim had told Parliament previously the Government does not make any money from the ERP increase. The reason: It will collect $70 million a year from the ERP increase, but will lose $110 million due to the 15 per cent reduction in road tax from next month. That is, in fact, a net loss of $40 million, he said. So motorists who do not use congested roads will be 'net gainers', said Mr Lim, pointing to Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Inderjit Singh. This is because Mr Singh, who shared the stage with Mr Lim at the dialogue with Sengkang West residents yesterday, works in Changi. Mr Lim is not so lucky as he works in the NTUC Building at One Marina Boulevard. Relating his driving experience to laughter from the audience, he said: 'Every morning when I come out of my house, it's one beep along Bukit Timah, then another beep entering Marina South. From July 7, I'll be getting another beep just along the road to my office. 'The amount I pay through all this beeping will be more than the road tax rebate I am getting. Why? Simply because I am one of those who always go to busy areas.' Do U Agreed ?
  25. http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Sto...ory_215516.html Home > ST Forum > Story March 11, 2008 Thanks, but sorry, it just doesn't work... I HAVE tried the new taxi scheme for a week - but, sorry, it doesn't work for me. For years, the Government has worked relentlessly, and so successfully, to make it 'easier to do business here'. But, in one single act, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has made it more difficult, particularly for the foreign businessman. Imagine, the newly arrived businessman leaves his hotel, gets into taxi and says: 'Hitachi Tower, please.' 'Cannot.' 'Why?' 'Must alight at taxi stand.' 'But I don't know where it is!' 'Sorry, must ask.' Safer? I find long queues of taxis now, causing road jams, confusion and increased pollution. 'On-call' taxis have no idea where to stop - in the queue, at the front, at the back? And their fares do not know where to go. Quicker? Never. Twenty taxis used to pick up at the same time at 20 different locations. Now they have a single queue and it takes 15 minutes to pick up 20 passengers, assuming they've bothered to wait. Other major cities like London and Paris have taxis safely picking up fares in the street. Why is Singapore different? And it's even worse for the businessman leaving the office to go to Changi Airport, with suitcase. Where is the nearest taxi stand? Well, even I don't know and I've been in Singapore for the past eight years. And I simply can't find any of the new taxi stands in the Central Business District. Singapore used to have one of the best taxi services in the world. Now, it is too expensive and too inconvenient. But perhaps that was the real objective. I have certainly given up and use the train now - but it takes me three times as long. Duncan Edwards
