Singapore's SingTel has developed an application to rival the voice-activated Siri on the iPhone 4S that is sure to go down well in the island state -- because it can understand "Singlish". When Apple unveiled its latest handset earlier this month most of the talk was about Siri, which can give directions or even advice to users simply by asking a question into the speaker. However, since the new phone went on sale there have been numerous reports of Siri either responding with a completely irrelevant answer or simply saying it does not understand. YouTube videos of Siri misinterpreting the heavily accented words of iPhone 4S users in Japan -- the first Asian country to get the device on October 14 -- have been widely circulated on the Internet. But Singapore Telecom (SingTel) says its new app, DeF!ND, will help Singaporeans who use "Singlish" -- a localised form of English with words borrowed from Asian languages -- avoid such problems. SingTel said DeF!ND is a localised Siri-like application that is able to decipher uniquely Singaporean accents, names and locations. It made its public debut at the stroke of midnight Thursday, when SingTel Singapore chief executive Allen Lew gave it an instruction in a decidedly local accent as he launched the iPhone 4S in the city-state. "We have a voice application capability in DeF!ND that is unique because it understands the local language... which the voice recognition engine within an international device like Apple doesn't quite have," Lew said after the launch. "When we tried to test different voice recognition systems including... Siri, we found that the Singaporean accent is pretty unique and the common international voice recognition systems don't quite pick up the nuance of how we speak," Lew added. "And of course our street names and our food names are very local so we developed and trained this new system to allow it to recognise it better." DeF!ND will be available for free on the Android platform and Apple's iTunes "soon," a Singtel spokesman told AFP.

The Economy Is Doing Well COE prices are soaring because the economy is doing well and not because the Government is further slowing the growth in the vehicle population to 0.5 per cent, as that kicks in only in August, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on Sunday. He was responding to a steady stream of complaints about certificate of entitlement (COE) prices - now at their highest in more than a decade - from residents during a walkabout in Cheng San. Mr Lui said high COE prices are due to strong demand - with wages still on the rise, dealers introducing new car models and more people bidding now in expectation that premiums may rise further. Hi all With recent free documentation offered to car seller / buyer, and after selling a car myself once, I should continue to sell as direct buyer. Recently checked out some used cars, found that some dealers told me there were no servicing record because all are at agent's database; nobody keeps paper records anymore (definitely doubtful cos I still keep paper records). One of them even claimed he knew agent GM, wat a joke... What is your take? Why would you let dealer sell your car?

Sometime i wonder how such astronomical value of Singapore's COE can even be considered an indicator of the economic growth of singapore, Here is a recent article on the explanation of current increase in COE. COE increase Recently COE prices Hits 80k, when in many countries this sum of money would be able to get you many cars. Even with economic growth, I myself as the younger generation find it hard, or even impossible to own a car locally. -

Police bust online love syndicate, victims lost over $100,000 http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1185802/1/.html SINGAPORE: Police have busted an online syndicate which extorted at least $100,000 from unsuspecting individuals looking for love. The case arose when a 22-year-old man lodged a police report on Sunday, alleging that he was a victim of extortion. Initial investigations reveal that the man had befriended a woman in May last year, via an Internet chat room. Both engaged in webcam conversations which led to the woman persuading the victim to appear naked in front of the webcam. Unknown to the victim, the woman had recorded the footage. She then threatened to circulate the footage online if the victim did not transfer money to her. The man complied and this went on for nine months, with several other suspects entering the fray. In all, the man made over 80 transactions, amounting to at least $97,000 to various bank accounts provided by the suspects. The suspects, three men and three women, aged between 17 and 47, were arrested on separate occasions on Tuesday. The first arrest of four suspects was made at about 4am at a unit in Block 32 at Marsiling Drive. The other two suspects were arrested later at 3.30 pm in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio. It has been revealed that at least four other victims were conned, with the suspects receiving a total of at least $100,000. Two of the suspects, a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman, will be charged in Court on Wednesday for an offence of Extortion with Common Intention. Investigations are still on-going for the remaining suspects. If convicted, the suspects could be jailed up to seven years and caned. Police gave this advice. DSP Aileen Yap, Deputy Head of Investigation at Ang Mo Kio Police Division, said: "Exercise caution when dealing with unknown people over the internet. Do not accede to any request that may put yourself in a vulnerable position such as performing compromising acts in front of the webcam." - CNA/de

STOMPer Karen said a foreign woman, who was apparently a Chinese national, refused to give way to an elderly woman on a bus who was about to alight. The STOMPer said the foreign woman was also rude to the elderly passenger. The STOMPer, who took a video of the incident, said: "This happened this morning (Nov 16). "The bus was crowded and the elderly woman wanted to move to the back of the bus as she was going to alight soon. "But the China woman was standing up and blocking the way, even though there was empty seat in front of her. "When the elderly auntie asked the foreign woman to either sit down or move in to the back so that she could make her way to the door, the younger woman ignored her. "The woman sat down when the auntie asked her a second time, but she later started to argue because she wasn't happy about being told to sit down. "The auntie told her that she shouldn't be rude, as she is in Singapore, and the foreign woman replied that she lives in Singapore too. "When the old woman was about to alight, the foreign woman told the auntie that just because she's old, it doesn't mean that she has to give way to her."

The ride was smooth and swift despite the many stops. At HarbourFront, we continued on the line reaching Dhoby Ghaut in an hour. It was convenient because the Botanic Gardens, Holland Village and Labrador Park, which were remote previously, are now within reach via public transport. And yes, we sold our car because we think we can get around by public transport conveniently now.'

Are our Roads becoming dangerous because of young brats? Recently I was driving as usual on a 60kmph road in the middle lane. All of a sudden a black Hyundai Matrix with a P-Plate swerve and filter from the right into my path barely 2 meters from my front bumper. I had to brake to prevent hitting the Matrix. There were no signs of apology and the Matrix drove in a brazen way. Hence I decided to take a look and filtered right and paced the car. It was a teenage girl apparently unaware of her deed continuing to chat with a male passenger happily. As she was not too attractive I didn't take a longer look and decided to filter in front of her. I gave her about half car length with signal lights, I think she felt belittled as my car was incidentally more than double her car both in price and performance, she quickly filtered left. So i follow suite and since we were both were at about 80kmph, i decided to quickly follow the speed limit and kept at 55kmph.. for some distance toward a traffic light. While doing so, i looked at the rear view mirror. The teenage girl made some signs and hand gestures which I do not understand. She show a hand sign as if filtering, followed by a "so what" gesture. I didn't respond but kept looking. At that point we were stationary at the red lights. I kept looking... I think they couldn't take it anymore and got annoyed. The male passenger show his middle finger. I saw a immediate reaction from the teenage girl as if trying to push away his hand... then they started to smile and laugh. As I am a Methodist, I have a cross at my rear windshield. The male passenger and the female started to make sort of a "Praying" hand gesture and jeering at the same time. I kept my calm. So when the lights turned green, I drove on and as they passed me on the left I showed them a $50 note and make a gesture that says "you do not have money". Through some means I have identified the duo and their residence. If you were in my shoes what would you have done?

The mum has visted the modelling agency where the daughter is currently staying to get her to return home. However, the daughter has refused, used force on her mum and even called the Police to chase her away. Malaysian road bullies smashed S'pore car in JB -- because driver didn't give way STOMPer angry's car was badly smashed by a group of men in Johor Bahru at about 3am last Sunday (Apr 17), all because he failed to give way to a Malaysia-registered car. Said the STOMPer: "I went to JB for drinks, petrol, car wash and food. This happened at Stulang Laut (the ZON), which is popular among Singaporean drivers for its seafood. "The attack is believed to have started from a misunderstanding due to my failure to give way to a red Malaysian car that emerged from a small lane. "I had proceeded following behind the car in front of me and shortly, trouble came. My car was stopped by another man at the gate of the ZON. "The passengers in this red car rushed to my door and smashed the window with their fists and I can clearly see one man with a steering wheel lock. "I quickly drove off and soon, I saw more people chasing after my car. These were people on motorcycles and everything turned chaotic. "This attack happened all the way from Stulang Laut to the JB customs. I drove into the customs to sought protection from the police and surprisingly, these attackers followed me all the way into the customs and carried on smashing the car. "There were just a few police officers and they got us (there were two other friends with me) out of the car. But after we were out of the car, they carried on with the attack and even jumped on the roof of my car." According to the STOMPer, about 20 men attacked his car that night. He found out from Malaysian police later that only nine people were arrested, and among them were three 15-year-old minors. He added: "I had been chased by two Malaysian cars and at least 10 motorcycles that night. "I had numerous helmets being thrown at my car and several attempts by the two cars to corner my car. I am a frequent visitor to JB for the cheap food and petrol. STOMPer Alex was appalled that the manager at Ben & Jerry's Orchard Central outlet, rudely told his family off that their bill was only for $28 when they presented a voucher to pay with. Said the STOMPer in his email: "My family and I dined at Ben & Jerry's Orchard Central outlet today (Mar 26) at about 9pm.We had the most unpleasant experience and that left a bad taste in our mouths. "We were appalled by the rudeness and audacity of the staff in the store, having the supervisor speak to us in a rude manner was bad enough, when we requested to speak to the manager, Mr Jeff, his tone was equally bad, if not, worse off than his subordinates. "This is the gist of the incident. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we presented a discount voucher issued by UOB bank to one of the waiters to check if we can use this voucher. The waiter was not sure and he proceeded to enquire from his supervisor, a China lady by the name of Jennifer. She confirmed that we were able to use the voucher and we went on to order our food and ice-cream. She then returned the voucher to us. "After we finished our food, we called for the bill and presented the voucher once again. The supervisor, Jennifer brought the bill to us and also collected our voucher, she returned shortly after and told us that the voucher has expired and could not be used anymore. "We were surprised as she was the one who gave the approval to use the voucher. A slight argument ensued and I guess for the fear of being reprimanded, Jennifer insisted it was solely our mistake and repeatedly mentioned many times that we should have checked the voucher before using and it was all our fault! "At that moment, she could not find anymore excuses and we demanded to see the manager. The assistant dining manager came out and before we could speak, he told us, 'yes, you can use the voucher provided it was not expired'. "We reasoned that it was his supervisor who told us we could use the voucher and that was why we sat down to order our ice-cream, how could he turn the tables around and say such illogical excuses? "We held our grounds and told Jeff that this verification was done by his waiter and supervisor. He should not deny and he did check with Jennifer. Seeing that there was no way out, Jeff mentioned very rudely, 'it is just $28, I can buy you the dinner'. "To my utmost astonishment and shock, that was not what I was expecting from a manager! Was he looking down on me by saying such things in a very rude tone? I warned him not to be rude and he mentioned once again, 'it is only $28 lah. I can buy for you'. He then walked away. "Actually I was pinpointing at the rudeness of the supervisor, but seeing how rude and uncouth the manager is, I forgave her and thought to myself, maybe this is Ben & Jerry's way of protecting their staff and subordinates, by standing on the staff side and oppose all customers regardless! "This will be my last visit to Ben & Jerry's. Customers to Ben & Jerry's at Orchard Central, beware."

hi guys. Assuming you are in this situation: 1 year ago, you bought a brand new Civic 2L Manual. Assuming, you paid 60% cash up front, 40% loan for 5 years. Being your new Baby, you only give it the best, best engine oil, regular checks, do a little mods here and there to have fun with the car. 1 year ago, think the price of civics were not too crazy ( 80k-90k range?) Then, 1 month after you got your car, you meet your future wife. then, 1 year after getting the car, you 2 decide to get married ( assuming you 2 are ready to tie the knot, buy house etc etc etc and she's a really good partner blah blah, your parents love her, her parents are super cool with you). Then assuming you 2 find the house of your dreams ( ie, you got the property at an incredible price! jump down price, maybe 10% below market value due to extremely good kang tao). But all this time, while you are dating/ patohing, you are still driving your civic 2L and you still maintain it perfectly ( regular grooming, part changes, overall checks). Then next yr ( car is 2 yrs old liao), you are married liao, dinner over liao. then here's one bad thing: your wife only has Class 3A licence. She wants you to change to an Automatic car so that she can drive. But then, your car is still as good as new! Assuming, by then, COE is still as high as today ( Cat B $72k, Cat A $40k+) and car prices are still insane, Would you change your car to an automatic just for your wife ( and spend more) Or get your wife to convert to a Class 3 licence so that she can drive your car? Lets assume, you are planning for a child and every cent save counts. This is just a hypothetical situation. Just curious cause, I just got my new ride b4 COE went crazy, ride's manual and confirm not girl friendly. hahaha... Cheers all

Pay adjustment deferred Reason: Private sector benchmarks used to calculate pay have fallen By Li Xueying A PLANNED adjustment of the pay of Cabinet ministers and top civil servants to align it with salaries in the private sector has been deferred - for the third time. The adjustment was to have been made in January last year, but was deferred then, and again last November, because of the weak economy. A statement from the Public Service Division (PSD) said the Government will monitor economic growth and movement of the pay benchmarks 'before making any subsequent decision on when to implement the salary adjustment'. The deferment applies to administrative service officers, and those who hold political, judicial and statutory appointments. Explaining the deferment despite a roaring economy this year, the PSD said the two private sector benchmarks it uses to decide the pay of these officers had fallen. The first benchmark - 2/3M48 - pegs pay to two-thirds of the salary of the 24th highest earner in a group comprising the top eight earners from six selected professions. This benchmark is used to determine the pay of entry-level ministers and senior permanent secretaries. The second benchmark - 15P32 - pegs pay to that of the 15th top earner aged 32 in the same six professions.
