Instead of waiting for the country/others to make you proud, she can take the first step and try to make the differences.
  5. Fill in the blanks. What personalities, events, achievements or whatever make you most proud to be Singaporean? What makes you roar "Yes - way to go Singapore, that's what I'm talking about" It can be in any field - political, social, science, sports, money. Whatever you want to talk about, it doesn't have to have been hugely reported or known, and it can stretch back to pre-independence. There should be lots to talk about - it might be Mr. Creative, or maybe Mr. Mountaineer.... It might be having heaps of millionaires, or maybe the rate of house ownership (the highest in the world). It could be some events from the occupation, or even prior, It might be the invention of Chili Crab... So do tell - what makes you proud to be Singaporean?

  7. LOL..... CNA report: 7 in 10 S'pore employers promote staff without pay rise Posted: 13 June 2012 1619 hrs SINGAPORE: Nearly seven in 10 (68 per cent) Singapore employers promote their staff without giving them a pay rise. Singapore comes in third after Chile (79 per cent) and China (70 per cent) as the top three countries that adopt this practice. That's according to a survey by recruitment firm, Robert Half. It polled 1,800 human resource managers across 17 countries. In Japan, only 26 per cent of HR managers promote their staff without pay increases, with 66 per cent saying they would never use the practice. According to the survey, 53 per cent of Singapore companies promote staff to more senior positions without a rise in salary because they prefer to offer a performance bonus instead. Another 47 per cent prefer to offer their employees more flexible working hours. Additional annual leave is also offered by 35 per cent of HR managers in lieu of additional pay. Robert Half said there are risks for companies offering a promotion without a pay rise, and employers should offer adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits to retain their staff. Ms Stella Tang, director of Robert Half Singapore said, "While pay is not the only factor employees consider, if companies do not provide adequate compensation either through pay or other benefits, then they may lose their top performers to the competition. In particular, within the banking & financial services and commercial sectors, companies are struggling to get the right finance and accounting professionals to fill jobs. "If an employee with the right skills tests their worth in the employment market, they may find they have several job offers to choose from. If budget constraints mean no additional monetary compensation can be offered, the reasons why need to be clearly communicated." She added that for some employees, especially those with families, offering more flexible work arrangements may be of more value than money. "It comes down to whether an employee can come to an agreement with their employer that balances their professional goals with remuneration for their efforts," said Ms Tang. - CNA/cc More work, more responsibilities and who don't want pay increase, please tell me ....

  13. recently i posted a news of "Singapore roads rated best in the world" but seems like the replies are mainly negative ones... i remember most of us (i assume) felt proud as Singaporean way back in the 80s/90s when news reported that our airport and seaport were rated one of the best and efficient in the world... today, seems like the Singapore identity has eroded fast so i'd like to hear from you guys... how can we feel proud as Singaporeans again? eg. Singapore annual GDP growth highest in the world Singapore national team qualifies for World Cup 2014 Singapore builds the highest building in the world Singapore scientist discovers cure for cancer, or AIDS Singapore film wins top award in Cannes etc will you feel proud if any of the above scenario happens?
  14. In africa, mid east, and many other parts of the world, democracy has to be re-claimed or restored thru street demostrations and sometimes plus blood shed.......... on 7th May here in SGP, the 39% has made the change similar to this, though just one small (first) step in the direction, without any street activities, not a single drop of blood......... just the awakening of the heart and mind, and the will to make changes in the right direction, and most of all, the love for Singapore and Singaporeans....... Lets hope more will join the 39% in 2016
  15. Well done, you have made us proud for winning Aljunied GRC!!! Bye bye George!!!!
  16. Who agrees or disagree with Mr Mah? When my 99years HDB left with 50 years, will it still continue to appreciate yearly? So HDB is lesser the remaining lease, the more expensive it becomes? Good leh, investment of the century, uniquely Spore. I will keep my HDB till 98th year then sell it off at record price. Mah responds to WP on Govt housing policy Following the Workers' Party's (WP) reiteration on Wednesday that prices of new flats should be pegged to median income, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan has said that the real intent of this was to reduce prices, which would be an "asset depreciation policy". "All the markets are inter-linked ... So, when you reduce new flat prices, there'll be an impact on the resale flat market," he said. "What happens to those people who want to sell who are in mortgage arrears? What about those who are now in negative equity? These are some of the repercussions of the things that the WP is suggesting in this manifesto which they have not pointed out." Mr Mah, who spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's Corporate Seminar, said a price reduction means the Government would have to provide additional subsidies. "Is (the money) going to come from education? From healthcare? From defence? (The WP) didn't say. Or if they said, 'no it's not going to come from any of this', are they going to raise taxes? Or are they going to dip into reserves?" He defended the PAP's approach: "We're proud of the asset enhancement policy. (It) has given almost all Singaporeans a home of their own, a home that's also an asset ... that grows in value over time."
  17. Taken from another place: Dec 29, 2010, ST Nightmare over for 44 Singaporean home owners in JB But they have to fork out more money to get deeds By Elizabeth Looi, Malaysia Correspondent PUTRAJAYA: A 10-year battle to get the deeds to homes they bought near Johor Baru ended for 44 Singaporeans yesterday, but the deal agreed on will cost them even more. Each of them will have to pay a bank 12.5 per cent of the cost of their houses and another RM3,000 (S$1,200) in disbursement costs, in a deal reached in the Court of Appeal here yesterday. This means the buyers will have to pay the bank about RM53,000 each for their title deeds. The bank said they each must pay 10 per cent of the amount by Jan 31 and the balance by May 31, or it will auction off their properties. Despite the fact that they have to shell out more money, the buyers were relieved by the ruling. It has been taxing and costly for them to travel to Putrajaya for the court hearing and mediation. Each trip to Malaysia cost them RM1,500 - used to charter a bus. 'It has been a long-drawn affair and we want closure,' said businessman Kumaran Pillai, 40. 'If we get the title deeds, we can do other things, like selling off the properties.' Yesterday's decision, however, was not the end of the case for other Singaporeans who bought property in the development. A number of them have chosen to appeal against the earlier decision by the JB High Court that had allowed the bank to auction off their properties. The Court of Appeal has yet to set a date for the next hearing. The protracted housing nightmare began when the Singaporeans, mostly retirees, bought the houses in the project built by Focus Development in 1998. Taken in by promises of condominium facilities, such as a swimming pool and 24-hour security, most buyers paid cash for the properties. But two years later, the developer went bust, leaving them in the lurch. Some of the buyers were then forced to collectively raise RM380,000 to build roads and install street lights to obtain the certificate of fitness so they could move in. The developer's whereabouts are unknown. Meanwhile, the bank that loaned money to the developer won a court order in 2006 to auction off the houses that had various problems such as leaks and infestations of termites. The JB High Court ruled that the houses were an abandoned project, although they had already been built. It also ordered the buyers to pay 10 per cent of the cost of their houses for their title deeds, on top of what they had already paid for the properties. Some of them were willing to pay at that time but others appealed. Yesterday, Judge Low Hop Bing said the 44 buyers would be allowed to get loans from banks to settle their payment as agreed in mediation. 'You will be proud that you own a house, rather than a small pigeon hole in another country,' he said.
  18. Had lunch around Amoy road sometime this week and was sitting near 3 girls also having lunch. One of them is a quite rotund, unpleasant looking loudmouth NTU accountancy grad (probably 21-22yrs old) she was bitching very loudly about how lame her senior in the company is. That he has worked 10 yrs and is still so lowly paid. Cursing him and degrading the fella in public. In a loud bitchy haolian tone, she also declared that ACCA is no big deal and that she was a grad and only need to pass 4 papers to get it. the other 2 girls were clearly lower educated as they sort of hung their heads quietly as this bitch spoke. Felt like bursting out laughing but kept my composure so i wont waste my curry rice. Then she carried on emphasizing that she is a "fu*cking" grad and implied that she can earn lots very quickly and climb to the top etc etc... the usual crapsh*it lah as you guys know..... Is our younger generation really headed towards such a path? Maybe i'm getting old. anyway, gonna have a Bolivar Royal Corona now.
  19. Warning... Scary image below... I am not kidding SINGAPORE's table tennis women ended the Republic's Olympic medal drought and Yip Pin Xiu took a gold in the Paralympics in Beijing but it was fiesty under-sized swimmer Tao Li who won The Straits Times Athlete of the Year 2008 award. Even Tao Li was shocked by the win. She would have picked the women paddlers, she said. he was not alone making that choice. In a Straits Times online poll, Web surfers voted overwhelmingly for Li Jiawei and her fellow Olympic medallists as deserving winners for the award. But this award is not about medal tallies. It is about inspiring athletes who surpassed all expectations and connected with Singaporeans not because they won but because they did much more. Winning was secondary. There were winners aplenty. The women paddlers brought back Singapore's first Olympic medal after a 48-year break. Pin Xiu impressed with her gold medal performance in the 50m backstroke, S3 category at the Beijing Paralympics. Jasmine Yeong-Nathan took the bowling world championship title in Hermosillo, Mexico, by winning the AMF Bowling World Cup and golfer Lam Chih Bing clinched the Volvo Masters of Asia to make it his first Asian Tour win. There were no medals for the Singapore Lions in this tournament but they moved into the third round of the World Cup football qualifiers for the first time in history. But when sports journalists in The Straits Times awards panel looked at who proved most inspiring, Tao Li proved hardest to beat. Pin Xiu was outstanding in Beijing, but she went to the Games as the world-record holder for her event. She was the favourite. The table tennis trio were ranked second in the world going into the competition. It would have been considered an upset had they not won the silver medal. But Tao Li, 19, was a different story. She outdid herself. When she stepped into Olympic city last year, her timing for the 100m butterfly was not even in the top 24. But in the final, her time of 57.99sec was just over a second behind Australia's Libby Trickett, who won the gold in a time of 56.73sec. She became the first Singaporean to make an Olympic swimming final. Because of her times in Beijing, she finished the year as the fourth-fastest swimmer in the world. She also won the Republic's second Fina/Arena World Cup gold medal in the women's 100m butterfly at the Stockholm, Sweden, leg. The swimmer who was written off as too short to be a serious competitor swam against the best in the world and came close to taking an Olympic medal. She did one of the most difficult things an athlete could do, which was to exceed expectations. She could have been satisfied with just breaking her record, which she did to become the first Singapore swimmer to win a spot in an Olympic final. But she was not. Today, she is not just a star swimmer. She has become a role model. Just yesterday she spoke about a girl who took up competitive swimming after watching her in action. Tao Li had shown that one could be under-sized but still be among the best, the girl had said. If that is not inspiration, what is?
