repair prices are rather affordable for the starlet...

even if the worse case scenario (engine blow), it's about 200-600 for the engine and labour charges. other than that every car (new or old) needs maintenance. for older cars, maintenance costs tend to be lower, but comes at the expense of higher chance of needing repairs.

if you have very tight budget that repairs are going to be an issue, then perhaps it's better not to commit to a car yet.

common problems include oil leaks, water leaks, blown head gaskets, faulty air-con compressor and 5th gear popping out by itself.

once the car is moving, power steering is not really needed. only when stationary or parking, you may find it slightly heavier, but it isn't unmanageable. people lived without power steering for a very long time.

if u're lucky enough, u get one wif power steering. i think is from ae101(corolla). i'm quite lucky, got one wif full ep82 power windows, side mirrors and power steering! hehe.

wat has broke down in my car? the air con system and clutch. wear & tear issue. the rest of my expenses on the come are personal add ons.

now that im driving one with power assist.. my arms become more and more flabby liao! [sweatdrop]

Hi all Starlet bro,

After reading all 800 post i am quite [dead] haha.

Basically I am looking for either cheap COE car (preferably a Starlet!!!) or New 1L car. Looking the FC of the Starlet of some bros here, seems like it's doing 11~12KM/L. Just thinking whether it's really worth it to get a Starlet for hobby sake or just get a new car for A to B?

History:

I am renting a car (Getz 1.6M at 12km/l) off from a friend, not quite happy of the total car ownership cost ard $1k but still affordable to me (i think i can make it lower still if i get a new car/a COE car).

- Not really fond of driving on SG road daily (hate the traffic and most drivers on the road haha) but like the convenient than getting a Taxi every time I need to travel.

- Have a routine of traveling from Jurong West to Serangoon Garden/Sengkang area every weekend and almost full day (so co-op not an option)

Need opinion from car owners' experience like:

- Is it worth getting a Starlet and start a hobby on it or get a new 1L car (do they really hit 16~17km/l? car like Spark/Picanto/or mayb Getz haha)

- If i only travel A to B on weekend and a few days in the weekdays. Still better to get a COE car or a new 1L car?

Comments are welcome. Thanks.

Cheers,

Kimu

asking this in a starlet forum is looking for trouble. they will tell u how good tat car is and how low the maintainence is...etc..jialiat.

oh btw, i'm driving a starlet. oh boy..u will f--king love that car!! minus alittle comfort but the car rocks. i'm have lots of fun wif it. hehehehe. [thumbsup][thumbsup]

and yes, 12km/l is not a myth for this old warrior. depending on ur driving style, i ever clock 450km/tank for it too! which abt 32l of patrol was pump. wonderful.. [inlove]

Hahaha, ya I saw some "poison" along the way to this posting. Quad headlight, SU, carb... u guys are killing me. Oh and ITE course (was initially wanted to take up the part time course to learn how to maintain car engine).

So now my dilemma is to send $7k + $2k (post sale e fund) to get a Starlet for 3 years (most of the ads I saw at sgcarmart is ard there). Or find a new car which can do 15km/l avg (been looking at Honda Freed since morning and looks like a potential candidate except that PI are putting it at 63k on classified.)

Quick question, how much sound proofing can you do on a Starlet? How to counter rust for such an old chassis?

Hmm, after reading through the Honda Freed thread. I think I am giving up the idea. Just want something cheap and fun. So my next candidate will be Honda Fit 1.3 (not sure if there's any Fit that comes with peddle shift)

So now... EP80? Honda Fit 1.3? or Picanto/Spark (haha...)

$7k works out to be about $2.3k per yr. i doubt u can find another car at tat price. if its a car u think u wont be driving for too long, the starlet is a good choice. if the condition of the ep80 u bought is good, u can consider renewing it given the low coe now.

its up to u really, newer cars doesnt means it wont break down and it also doesnt mean that its more comfortable or safer.
