Auto Gear Problem

Need help from the bros here.

 

I have an auto Sunny at home and I have a problem with it's gear. Whenever I started with [P]ark and try to engage to [D]rive, I have to use quite a bit of force to bring the gear stick to [D]rive. It only happens occasionally.

 

Normally I depress the brake pedal fully and with the hand brake still up, then I press the switch on the gear stick to engage [D]rive. Or is my procedure wrong?

When stop engine, did you put to "P" before engaging your handbrake?

 

If yes, try to engage your handbrake 1st, before put to "P", it might work.

Firstly, what is your mileage now and when is the last time the ATF is changed?

 

As for me, i normally depress my brake pedal, off handbrake then shift my AT from P to D and when parking is depress brake pedal, shift AT from D To P then pull handbrake

What has happened is that you shifted into P, released your foot brake, then the car rolled forward or backward slightly (which you did not notice), applying tension to the gearbox.

 

On the next restart, the gearbox is still "under tension", so the gear lever is reluctant to shift.

 

Test this theory by stopping on perfectly flat ground, then shifting in P (many times at different times of the day and after driving different distances). If the gear lever now becomes obedient, then confirmed your "problem" it is because you stopped on sloping ground and shifted into P and then allowed the car to roll forward or roll back and thus put pressure on the gearbox. It is not a real problem, just poor technique.

 

When parking on sloping ground, make complete stop first, keep foot on brake, shift into N, pull handbrake, test handbrak is holding, THEN shift into P.

You mentioned hard to shift the gear stick, maybe the button on the gear stick came loose?

the first thing you might want to check is the footbrake switch.....

the switch may be defective, it will contact when you step on the foot brake.

then the electromagnectic solenoid in the shift lever will de activated so you can shift from P to D (safety feature).

the other thing is the solenoid/catch itself in the shift lever.

 

it will have almost nothing to do with your handbrake applied/not applied at the time.

even less so with the ATF or the gearbox. the shiftlever moved switches and contacts - is mechanically isolated from the gearbox.

i agree with you.. especially when parking at a slight gradient, make sure car is completely stationery, pulled handbrake, then put to P. if not sometimes difficult to engage gear.

BTW, the car's mileage is at about 32900++
