City vs. Vios

Hi all,

my fren is torn btw these 2 cars. While he wants fuel economy (City) more than power (Vios), and I've also recommended City to him coz it's got better specs, another fren told him to opt for Vios coz it's a Toyota, and Toyota is always better than Honda in the long run in terms of less maintenance/problems.

Is this true? Is Honda more problematic in the long run? But I also wonder if the Vios, which is a low cost, entry-level car with ASEAN parts, will also be comparable with other higher-end Toyotas, like Altis and Camry? Any Soluna owners here wanna share their experience here?

Thanks!

Seems everyone's interested in these two cars nowadays. My take is this: Anyone who buys a Toyota because it's a Toyota (as opposed to genuinely being a better car) gets what he deserves, no more, no less. But those willing to look beyond brand prejudices and reputation (which assumes that manufacturers cannot change, either for better or worse - very faulty assumption) will often find a sweeter surprise than they expected. And to offer a thoroughly non-scientific answer to the question of reliability, just look around you: how many 5-8 year old Corollas do you see on the road, as compared with Civics? [;)]

yes there was a previous post on this topic, do a search for it [scholar]

these 2 cars do have different features, strengths & weaknesses (e.g. CITY has better storage options). Ur fren should see which car suits his/her needs better [nod]

And by the way, VIOS fuel comsumption is pretty good, I dun think CITY or even JAZZ can be significantly better

Honda reliability is now a force to be reckoned with. It is equal to or better than Toyota actually.. as witness them scoring the 'most reliable' car of driver power 2003 survey.

Both cars dun really look good to mi.. [:/] So i recommend him the jazz.

I heard from a Japanese friend that comparing a Honda and Toyota is like comparing a provision shop with Cold Storage. No offense to the Honda lovers there but just in case my Japanese friend waa pulling my leg.

Anyway, I like the new Euro Accord. Smaller bum and very very cute. Too bad I could not afford it.

On the contrary, i find honda a little more upscale. Maybe becoz we dun see honda pickups, vans, taxis, etc??... [dizzy]

My fren whose tried both the city and vios prefers the city for its refined engine and smoother transmission compared to the vios which was somewhat more jerky. However, he still bot the toyota in the end cos of the awkward shape of the city. Having had a honda civic for 20 years, i must say its engine and transmission is top notch. Even my fren who had an old corolla before commented that my engine was still in tip top condition. And thru out the 20 years, no repairs of any sort was done on the tranny of my old honda....The pt is that both cars are pretty good and i dun think either would give much problems in the long run. ur fren juz has to pick what suits him best and not worry abt reliability for which i think both manufacturers are pretty good. And besides, going to BM is a big pain in the a.... so u might want to think abt that.

It's true. Honda is nothing compared to toyota back in japan. thats becos they were primarily a motorbike maker and it was difficult to play catch up in a protectionist economy like japan those days. So they sought market share in the US first and that also explains why they are more recognised in the US than Toyota in the 90s.
