Selespeed156 Neutral Newbie July 20, 2002 Share July 20, 2002 Hi, I was contemplating to buy either the brand new Primera in Black (no stock at that time ... got to wait for 2+ months) or Mitsubishi VR4 (2nd hand, 1yr7 months old, in Black), or the Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed (2nd hand, 1 yr old, and yes in Black). Test drove the VR4 first, 280 hp was very intriguing, handling was very good with 4WD. A bit pricey with high Road Tax and fuel consumption. Looked fierce and very sporty with lots of gauges. Almost paid deposit but after my wife calculated the expenses per year (interest, depreciation, resale etc......), decided to wait a while and told dealer that I would consider again if the price were to drop further. Next was the Primera. Beautiful build, excellent interior, totally European concept (unlike the very boring, very dull Camry), high class feel in the interior,......... until I test drove it !!?!? 150 hp but felt like only 100 hp, especially with the CVT.... yes the CVT. Floored the car to test pick up from stand still and it just crawled at its own speed, slowly. That made me changed my mind. Moreover, need to wait for 2.5 months for the black. The last car to test drive was the Alfa 156 Selespeed. Beautiful car, researched about it while overseas from different websites. Totally different feel, it has the gorgeous Italian Flair inside and outside. Test drove it, very responsive and handling was superb..... (owner was a lady, was quite terrified by the way I tested it). Paid deposit for it immediately after the test drive that day. Looking forward to starting the babe everyday, the engine note, yes......engine note and not exhaust noise...was fantastic to listen to, better than the stereo. The Selespeed is actually a manual car, but clutch and gear change was done electronically. Feels like driving an auto car, but 10 xs more thrill. Joined AROC and owning the car becomes a lifestyle and hobby, its so much more than a transportation. The car needs a lot of TLC. Cheers! Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mondeo Neutral Newbie July 20, 2002 Share July 20, 2002 (edited) Well, different person got his likes That Y so many Cerfiro on the road Primera actually is a family car, it can't be compared with the Selespeed, especially the P is CVT A/T, right Doc Mike!? VR4 wasn't that good in term of the cost value & the Power. its cost more than a EVO7 & power..... And sure U can tuned the Selespeed better than ever. Doc can be assisted. As I'm quite happy to keep my Alfa75, I've paid the COE for another 10 years. Over at AROC, the others will advice you on maintaining your car well. Most drivers TLC doesn't include Italian-tuneup, which is very important in an Italian car. Learn to handle your car well, and it won't disappoint you. BTW, did you go for the Family drive? While I've never driven a 156 before (can't afford it so felt it pointless to break my heart by trying it out) but from ppl who have and actually own one, and also from my little experience with older AR's, as well as looking at what you've posted here, I believe you'll be very happy with what the 156 has to offer you. As for the Primera, like what Mondeo pointed out, heard that it's something that's tuned for comfort and the family man. And according to several write-up's I've come across, it's a departure from its predecessor's sharper handling characteristics. Nonetheless, for what it does, it's supposed to do it quite well.....once again, here's wishing you all the enjoyment one could possibly get from your 156.... Renegade Neutral Newbie July 21, 2002 Share July 21, 2002 Btw, happened to stumble my way to that car-based shindig outside Ngee Ann City and actually got to take a look at the 147 up-front. Somehow, it looks a lot less radical than it did in the pics I'd seen to-date of it. Interior quite well sorted out, material and build (feel) pretty much up there tho' I must say the door-closing 'thud' gave a less solid feeling than expected. Somehow. Selespeed-equiped model more visually attractive inside. Overall, I'd say it's a nice follow-up to the hugely successful 156. Sadly, no test drive....
