Caldina 1st Gear August 29, 2012 Share August 29, 2012 Step 2 (only applicable for those who are cleaning the drum brakes later. If you are only attempting to replace a wheel, you may skip this step) Release the handbrake to free the wheel. It is very important to do this before jacking up the car. If the handbrake is released after the car is jacked up, there is the risk of the car moving a little...due to the backlash of the gearbox , and it may come crashing down...especially when the wheel is already removed. Weewee1976 3rd Gear August 29, 2012 Share August 29, 2012 Why do we need to release the handbrake? Because he's taking out the drum brake cover. If you just need to change tyres, there's no need to release handbrake.
