Mobil 1 is fine but 5w50 would be too thick for a normal NA car, a highly boost turbo like a STi would be fine though but ideal oil grade would still be a 10w40 instead of 5w50. A wise choice would be to bring your own Fully Syn 5w30 engine oil, it's not about the money save on the oil but the long terms fuel saving by using a more fuel efficient engine oil weight. I have never heard about Power fully syn, maybe you may want to do some research first before using it. Simple FC saving calculation for 10k km driven. 12km/l improve to 12.5km/l 12km/l used 833L of petrol at $1.747(92Ron) = $1456 petrol cost 12.5km/l used 800 of petrol at $1.747(92Ron) = $1398 petrol cost Saving of $58 in 10k km. The fuel saving itself will pay for the engine oil, why not?
Priest7 Neutral Newbie January 8, 2010 Share January 8, 2010 For normal auto 1.6l car, it's advisable to use 5w30 over 5w40? Will the fuel efficiency drop alot if i use 5w40? And how come some pple use 10w30 or 10w40? Thanks Cheers! :)

There is a differences during lab bench test but how much differences in real life, you got to try it out yourself. No one can give you a definably answer. Expected gains are around 3-5% range compiled from customers feedback, some figure for you to work with. There's no differences between 5w30 or 10w30 at 100'c, it's still a w30 oil. 5w only mean it can flow under -30'c condition while a 10w under -25'c, the first number are SAE "Winter" rating. Yuan 6th Gear January 8, 2010 Share January 8, 2010 It depends more on how you take care of the engine, if using good quality synthetic then 150-200k can be considered high mileage. but if using low quality oil then upon 70-80k the engine would look like a 150-200k engine. Differences between using good quality synthetic and crap synthetic How do we differentiate good quality synthetic and crap synthetic?

Very good insight, guess my next oil change i will change to w30 instead of w40. i'll notice my FC drop quite abit after changing to w40. Thanks Cheers! :)
Kyojin 1st Gear January 8, 2010 Share January 8, 2010 how certain are you that the "many" siroccos that you've seen "being towed back on NSHW" are all caused by using 30wt oil? unless you have scientific proof, research or documentary done, i don't see why people should subscribe to hearsay and not follow manufacturer's specs if the car is entirely stock. 30wt oil is more than sufficient these days even for turbo cars. the 40 wt theory is old school. it's the most "recommended" oil in Singapore because they are the most commonly supplied to workshops and probably with higher commission margins too. even in different climates, only the winter rating makes the difference. they may need 0W30 or 5W30, but in warmer climates you can use 10W30. think the TS should go with what's in the owner's manual and follow manufacturer's recommendations. if you are going for a track day, you should get a little more protection by changing your oil to a 40 or even 50 wt oil before the track day and then flush immediately after. it's all about how you maintain the car. RedBeanMilk Neutral Newbie January 8, 2010 Share January 8, 2010 I respectfully disagree. In my opinion, 30k mileage use 40 engine oil is way too early. High mileage might be in the region of 75k or 80k mileage onwards. hahaha.. tats y reading the manual is the best.. a lot of hear say hear say... it also boils down to how long and how much the owner willing to spend.. Cos normally i just leave it to ws to do. How much qty you need depends on your car model but generally a Korean 1.6cc car will take 4qt of engine oil. As for the good synthetic brand, just do some research, google for it, sure can find something you like one.
