Zafchen Neutral Newbie June 14, 2010 Share June 14, 2010 (edited) i test drove the 1.2Golf.... two main issues i encountered. 1) After i let go accelerator n let it run slow, when i stepped hard on accelerator, the car doesnt react til 1 sec later... the lag is v obvious... is this the turbo lag? 2) i cant feel anything at low rpm... but the car zoom off with power at high rpm.... which means either the car go v slow or v v fast..... very hard to regulate the speed in between... firstly, for your 1), you most properly get the taste of turbo lag, cos unlike supercharge, turbo need time to kick in, so the 1sec lag is pretty normal, and due to the characteristic, the car will feel slow before the turbo kick in, and once it kick it, the power will just zoom, that is why u are having this.. that the reason for VW to have the 1.4 sport GT with twin charge...Super charger take care of low-end, turbo take care of high-end. you first time driving turbo car? Quirky_ster Clutched June 14, 2010 Share June 14, 2010 You need some practice and a little driving habit change to drive a TC car. It took me almost a month to adjust my driving habit when I first switch from Na to TC car. The lag could be due to the gearbox trying to make the right decision nothing to do with the TC.. Then again, I am not VW engineer, so not really sure what is the main cause.
Happily1986 5th Gear June 14, 2010 Share June 14, 2010 Maybe it is me but i really cannot reconcile the relatively inflated price with a 1200cc engine. Call me antiquated if you like. Deep down i still harbour the belief that there is no replacement for displacement. While i marvel at the 1.4TSi Jetta outperforming the Civic 1.8, i feel that the asking price should be pegged with accordance to its engine capacity somehow. yes yes i am paying for technology. But i might consider that price reasonable HAD the 1.2 be a twin charged power plant.

Agreed.. there is no replacement to displacement... when I drove my TC car, trying to accelerate from 120km/h to 150km/h, shifting down to 3rd gear and the rpm shot up to 5K, the car lost out its breath.... car simply not accelerating much.. shift up to 4th gear and it accelerates smoothly again.. From 180km/h to push it to 195km/h, it takes more effort since the rpm is at 5km region again... in this range, the displacement simply cannot be replaced by TC... since my max torque is maintain from 1400 till 4000 rpm only and it's downhill from then on... but for city driving, it does a wonderful job. Kar_lover Supercharged June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 it got turbo. how else does a 1.2L go under 10s from 0 to 100km/h? Yes, it has turbo (in fact twin turbo) but i would say the 0-100 timing is a lot to do with the 7 speed DSG. Honda Jazz/Fit 1.3 got 100hp but with the "normal" AT/CVT gearbox, will be anything close to the timing of the Golf. And the Golf is probably heavier (more than negating the 2hp advantage it has over the honda).
Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 23, 2010 Author Share June 23, 2010 1.2TSI only have 1 turbo lah.... Skoda launching the 1.2TSI Yeti and Fabia too....
Kar_lover Supercharged June 24, 2010 Share June 24, 2010 1.2TSI only have 1 turbo lah.... Skoda launching the 1.2TSI Yeti and Fabia too.... I always thot that those badged "TSI" is only turbo charged and those with the "Sport" badge like jetta sport is twin charged but when i checked wiki this is wat they said: Motor vehicle techologies TSI, an acronym used by Volkswagen Group for petrol engines featuring its "twincharger" (turbocharger plus supercharger) and....... Full link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSI So then i tot maybe TSI is all twin charged and the difference btw the "sport" and non-sport is that the engine tuned differently such that the Sport models have higher power. Can anyone who actually owns a VW comment?
Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Author Share June 24, 2010 TSI is just a term used by VW for their turbocharger or twincharger technology.... the 1.2TSI models only have 1 turbocharger.... the 1.4TSI models also only have 1 turbocharger.... except when you're referring to the 1.4TSI Sports (160bhp version)....that's using a twincharged technology.... has a supercharger for low revs, and a turbocharger for higher revs.... confusing yes??? not quite.... Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Author Share June 24, 2010 yup.... paiseh.... the Octavia 1.4TSI....at $98,800.... HA only bring in the basic version of this car now, ever since the high-end 'Comes with everything' spec car costs more than the parent VW Jetta/Golf.... no more twin electric seats, alcantara seats, active cornering lights, etc.... just a basic car.... and the Superb to me (though i appreciate the spacious rear legroom), the exterior is simply too ugly for anyone blessed with the gift of sight.... imagine turning up in this car (being chauffeured) outside a posh restaurant or high class hotel.... it's a hideous sight!!! i'd still rather be seen in a Camry/ i45.... haha.... Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Author Share June 24, 2010 but in terms of German interiors, i think the best is still the BMW 5-Series.... great design, and good interior ambience (especially the beige interior colour).... if only the 5-Series had the Superb rear legroom.... the thing about VW related products is that, though the exterior looks decent, the interior is a very bland and boring and dull place to be in.... that's the upset for me for the Scirocco and Passat CC.... but then again, i appreciate the fact that VW (and company) isn't pretending to be a BMW/Mercedes rival with complicated designs of the dashboard.... simplicity at its best in a VW/Seat/Skoda car.... different people different opinions and needs.... Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Author Share June 24, 2010 who said cannot compare??? if considering that i'm not a badge whore, and would not insist on a BMW-badged car, i'd be comparing the BMW 318i/320i with the VW Passat CC 1.8TSI 160bhp.... different cars, yes, but is a premium brand compared to the normal cars we see on the road.... it's really quite a pity....the dream of owning the Passat CC, which sure does look decently stylish on the outside (great for showing off), has an unacceptable interior design to me.... seems like i gotta aim higher and dream a higher dream to own the Audi A5 Sportback or A7 Sportback.... darn.... Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Author Share June 24, 2010 haha.... sorry.... but ya.... previously, when the Octavia was launched, it can be said to be a better buy over the VW Jetta, since the VW brother had a really outdated look and a slightly poorer build interior quality.... and i quite like the high spec version of the Octavia when they launched this model....(i like to have premium features in my car) however, what i couldn't live with is paying a ridiculously high amount of money for a Skoda-badged car.... it's really what Kia is to Hyundai per say....an even cheaper alternative to a particular make, in this case VW.... imagine a Kia costing more than an equivalent Hyundai??? That'd be nuts!!! (can't compare the current Forte with the outgoing Avante though).... HA and VW should actually learn from C&C on how they package their cars.... comes with above average of features, yet won't break the bank account.... ↡ Advertisement
