More safeguards to be introduced to curb gambling addiction if needed: Dr Balakrishnan

SINGAPORE: Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan has assured Singaporeans that more safeguards will be introduced to identify and protect those who are most vulnerable to problem gambling, if the need arises.

 

Dr Balakrishnan said this at a forum for contributors to the government feedback portal, REACH.

 

He added that the casino novelty amongst locals is wearing off and the number of residents at the casinos is gradually declining.

 

Still, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who was at the forum, said that it is important to keep senior citizens engaged to discourage them from going to the casinos.

 

Singapore's integrated resorts have been operating for over a year and concerns about problem gambling topped the issues at the Reach forum.

 

Dr Balakrishnan said the authorities have been keeping a close watch on the profile and usage patterns of those who frequent the casinos.

 

"Actually if I wanted to, I can tell you who in this room goes and how often you go, but I don't want to do that and that would be unnecessarily intrusive...taxi drivers will tell you, people who go there, they go there, they come back out, no money to even pay the taxi fare but they need a ride home to pay the money and then go back to the casino. These are warning signs."

 

Senior Minister Goh felt that older people have a different problem.

 

"Not because they have money but because they are bored...you go to the casinos to pass time the root cause is people who do not have interests in their lives," said Mr Goh.

 

A major programme in Singapore to ensure that senior citizens always have useful things in their old age is the Active Ageing programme. It is coordinated by the People's Association and also involves various community and welfare organisations in the country.

 

But Mr Goh said a long term solution is to ensure that the younger generation of today develop interests which stand them in good stead when they age. He added that there is also a need for Singaporeans to be more self reliant.

 

Mr Goh said: "How many of you followed the latest tragic events in Japan with the tsunami...and then put into context our floods in Singapore against that kind of disaster.

 

"I am not saying we shouldn't do anything about the flood. But the amount of noise you made with just sporadic flood compared to the Japanese. I saw them on TV. Very stoic looking. You don't see them crying. This has happened, just get on, that's the kind of spirit you want to have and you call it nation building."

this is a freaking depressing thread to see what is Singapore becoming.

No matter what is being said or done by our politicians, some will still opt to vote for the usual ones. While Singaporeans are generally better informed these days, some prefer to stay where they are, like in the movie matrix. I heard some views recently from some old folks in my family. They are retired, though i won't say comfortably but good enough to get by. They said things are working just fine here, so there's no need to rock the boat. They are not bothered by the larger picture or how the average Sporean is getting by as long as they see through the old age peacefully. Of course, those who are old and still have to clean toilets and hawker centres cos of lack of govt care will never want to vote the current govt.

 

As for the younger generation, those who are doing really well, having a very high salary, will also cast the same vote. The middle class, which most should be having their jobs now, but stifled by inflation, would most likely vote differently. Same goes for the poor.

 

I really hope when it comes to voting, regardless of background, ppl will vote based on the interest of our country rather than how they themselves are getting along. They should ask questions like are the govt policies benefitting society as a whole, and whether every class of Singaporean is represented and given the ability to lead a decent life. You go to a western country like Aus, all class of workers can afford to raise a family, have a decent wage etc. As for ministerial salaries, it's debatable but generally, we are the only democratic nation in the world with such a unique wage structure for our ministers. Furthermore, excellence in the private sector does not literally mean success in the public sector. In fact, there's very little evidence to suggest CEOs make astute politicians. Bear in mind no one is asking the ministers to live like beggars. But compared to the median salaries of the average Singaporean, the disparity is monumental.

 

Lastly, where there's no competition, there's no improvement. I've always been told the opposition is lousy. Just to draw an analogy. Years ago in basketball, the world could never compete with the US cos the best players could not represent the US. The world never tasted what it was like to challenge the NBA players. When things opened up, the world played the NBA teams and got thrashed in every game. As they competed more often, eventually the other teams got better and today, the US is no longer as dominant as in the past. Similarly, in the political scene, the situation has got so dire that there's barely even any competition. The only way is to let the other guys go in, get thrashed and they will eventually get better. But first, they need to even be given the chance to prove themselves. The irony of it all is we're a nation that encourages competition, from schools to the workplace. So it's ironic that there's little competition in the political scene. Take note election is not a competition. Election is the selection of teams for the competition. The competition begins after the election. It's time Sporeans encourage competition in the political scene for the betterment of society.

I am NBA fan too and can vouch for what you said happened in the basketball fraternity. We are a very unique country when it comes to introducing competition. Where critical industries like public transport, energy, power are concerned, our government is so eager to open it to private sector in the name of competition. But when it comes to election, they erect so many anti-competitive measures like GRC, high but not logical restrictions for candidates of general election and presidential election etc
