What's your definition of "rice"? To me, rice is all show, no go. Big engine swaps are definitely about go (go, go, goooo!!!), so they're not rice.

 

Of course, if you want to adopt the American Redneck definition of rice that considers all Jap cars ricers, then that STI in your avatar is also 'rice'.

 

So which is it?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so i keep my eyes wide shut and when i do open them up, they look through rose-tinted glasses. Before i can switch off my dark side and turn on my happy headlights, i spot mod jobs (Implant/Surgical) bordering on the mindless. Small runabouts with big jetabout wings (AA but with push up). Funny civics (Ah Lian) wanting desperately to soar like NSX (Rich Man tai tai). Hog hatches going nowhere fast in their reckless pursuit of perfection. The farce & dubious in their imitation Evo lancers and 'wrecks' Imprezas (Patpong mfg LV, Coach, Kate. S. Miu Miu etc). Budget boyracers (Ah Lian) who stretch their shoestring close to breaking point just to accessories their rides with body-kitch, meaningless decals (Cheap/immitate brand of make up) and underperforming performance parts

 

Hmmm, maybe i should keep my eyes wide shut and my motormouth closed.

Good cosmetic jobs are acceptable. Though I prefer my women/cars as stock. But there are some pretty terrible car mods out there... Saw one recently.

 

White Civic with big alloys and a carbon hood? Nice

Same car but with a huge black wing? Hmmmm... If that's what he wants I guess...

A Rice car is used to refer to cars of Asian make who have heavily cosmetic modifications and little or no internal modifications.

 

RICE - stands for Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement.

 

Commonly misunderstood by people who believe any asian 'done up' sports car is a rice mobile, and used as a negative term.

 

An automobile, generally of import classification, that is souped up and characterized by use of stickers and decals that do not match any manufacturer of the car, spoilers that look like airplane landing gear, and hideous paintjobs and fart cans. See also rice rocket.

 

Note: rice cars may be driven by eggs or rice boys. Rice cars are not solely an Asian phenomenon.

A Rice car is used to refer to cars of Asian make who have heavily cosmetic modifications and little or no internal modifications.

 

Rice originally referred to ANY Japanese car, fast or not. It's an American origin term, and has racist roots, referring to the Japanese staple of rice; hence their cars become "rice burners", later "rice rockets", or simply "rice".

 

Then the more politically correct people started coming in and saying the term should only refer to Jap cars with all show and no go - i.e. big spoilers, undercar neons, fake CF, stupid kanji stickers, etc. but nothing under the hood to speak of. Except dumb noisemaking BOVs, maybe.

 

Then the even more PC crowd made the finishing touches by insisting a car of any make (non Jap, including American and Euro) can be called "rice" on the same basis.

 

Then some (half)wits came up with the backronym "RICE".

 

RICE - stands for Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement.

 

This came later, as I said. It's a backronym.

 

I was a mod on a US car forum back in the day when these terms were still evolving. So I know what's what.

 

At some point, the US position became somewhat untenable when "four banger" turbo cars like the Dodge Neon SRT-4 started coming out specifically to compete with the ricers. They even have an ad campaign where this car is shown streetracing (and beating) a WRX. And retarded US kids with backwards-on baseball caps started putting horrid paint jobs, decals, park bench wings and garish undercar neons on their...well...Neons to rice them out.
