Hi guys,

I need help..

Very recently, my 06 sonata give me problems. Ytd while I was driving from Bukit batok to Suntec, midway there, the engine starts to vibrate and keep dying when it is idling in jams. I restarted my car alot of time and the same cycle keep on repeats itself again, and the engine checklight keep blinking. After 3-4 mins , the condition start to improve, so i drove it down to komoco service centre at alexendra road, nothing happen while on my way there, it was very smooth(no engine light, no vibration etc). At komoco motors, they did a dignostic check and they change my spark plug as they tell me it causes the problem. So, i let them change. I collected my car on that day and no problem surface up during my journey home.

But this morning , while i was driving, the engine checklight come out again ( but no vibration and dying ), i was worry so i drove the car back to komoco again. After they did a error code check, and they found out my cataylic converter is damage and causes the checklight to come out. They told me in order to replace the catalylic converter, i will need to wait for a week or 2 for the stock to arrive from korea and the replacement charge is 2k excluding labour.

Right now i am very confuse, i called up my friend and he told me it was due to i pump the nearest shell near woodload causeway malaysia petrol and he told me his audi has this same problem before. My friend also recommend me to pump full tank singapore petrol and monitor the situation. After that i called up komoco and verify but they say it is not malaysia petrol that causes this problem, they told me it is due to high mileage of my car.

My question now is should i listen to my friend and continue driving with the engine checklight on or should i change the cataylic converter? And does anyone encounted the same problem as me before and can share ur experience with me?

you might considered to have your cataylic "knock-through" to resolve this issue - too much carbon .

What is your mileage ?

Think you can get a cheaper deal at scrape yard, Since your car left about 4 years and its not worth changing a brand new one.

An average midpipe cost about 300, a sonata should cost around that range, maybe 300-500.

Go to man exahust at sin ming or fong kim at ubi to help you to solve the problem. There are specialist in exhaust system. If you want piece of mind. As what some bros here mentioned. Get from the scrap yard it is cheaper than replacing new which cost you 2K exclude labour.

Cat knock out may pass emission but if inspector suspect cat is knocked away, they tap tap hollow ho say liao. Fine plus new cat.

bro, u said yr cat is located at the exhaust... Is it the muffler? Most are after the down pipe before the mid pipe... and there is usually a second O2 sensor there to monitor the cat... Can it be the sensor faulty? Pls visit any reputable exos shop for 2nd opinion first i think...

Chances of the insepctor go and tap is very slim. Because the exhaust is hot!
