A question to all of you....

Have you fallen off in society?

I see so many people here complain about expensive coe, how crazy is Sky habitat...

But it seems to me that there are so many buyers of new cars and condos.

Yet you can only complain.

So do you belong to the group that has just lost touch of the world? and have fallen off the last rung of the ladder?

It seems so to me that your peers or younger generation has out done you..i am sorry for you

Rubberstamp?

High net worth FTs comes in, able to buy cars straightaway regardless of the COE level.

Born and bred Singaporeans, work hard and darn hardest still, may not be able afford to buy one.

The issue is not just about car ownership as a want or a real need. It's symtomatic of our Singapore turning into a playground for the rich. Is meritocracy not one of our nation's core value? Based on justice and equality? The influx of these group of FTs had changed the game. Hard work and wits may not guarantee you a better life I am afraid.

How many of us now can punch above the raised ceiling of middle class mediocrity and compete with these FTs?

Why does everyone need to own a car?

Which govt in the world guarantees this?

You get to own a car only if you can afford one.

If by the next round, you find COEs beyond your reach, it just means that you can no longer afford to own a car.

You will need to accept that fact when COEs increase to >$200K and a Cat A car costs at least $250K.

So how much do you want to borrow from the bank to buy that $250K small B&B car?

Or just switch to public transport?

People want to own car. They also want to live in private condo.

Now a fcuking 99-yr leasehold outskirts, non-prime condo already cost $1,700-1,800 / sqft.

So how much loan would anyone take for a $2M LH condo?

In the end, owe money from the bank until you retire at 65yrs old?

You still can enjoy after that?

One leg in the grave already.

Very bleak future leh!

If the gov's aim is to use money to control the ownership of cars, which is considered a mode of transport, then ain't we going back to the colonial days in modern times where the "whites" and the rest of the population are divided? If based on your reasoning, end of the day only the rich who can afford $200k COE will be able to own cars while the rest will have to further overload the already overstressed out public transport network.

You may not see the full picture or impact of a high COE like $200K. Business that relies on transportation (your daily necessatities included) will have to price their products higher. The problem is your salary will still be stuck at the $20k COE level to match this inflation. We're just talking about COE alone here, if factor in fuel costs, I guess many of us will have to live in modern slums. Business operators that aspire to own vehicles will also increase their prices to fulfil their dreams.

What I am saying is since LTA is already controlling the quota for the number of COEs to be released, ain't there any other better ways to allocate them to potential car owners through a queue or lottery system? This way, irregardless of your financial status, you are still able to own a car. By the way, which other governement makes car ownership so difficult? Take the ballating of a popular school as an example, if the school has a quota of x number of students, only x number of students will be admitted, you don't need to pay a "COE" to get into these popular schools, unless you go through backdoor. So whether it is $50 or $50K COE, the same number of vehicles will still be released on the roads based on the quota, unless it can be proven that LTA releases 2000 COEs at $1, we'll see 2500 vehicles on the roads (MID vehicles excluded). Therefore I am not convinced that the gov is not treating this as a cash cow. In a way, it is causing unnecessary inflation of costs.

I am really disappointed with LTY for just dissecting the high COE issue as merely attribute it to good economy.... hope that in his capacity, he should have come out with a better and clearer view instead! [shakehead]

Obviously they just want to earn money. Have current COE system ok, but must give back to citizens in some ways. The amount collected can be used to offset public transport costs. Nationalize public transport, use COE money to cover operating cost and improve service. I'm sure transport fee will be drastically reduced.

But our govt are money faced and heartless, no chance this will happen.

With the increase of COE, can we ask for erp refunds during jam, since coe can reduce cars, erp should void. Y they hv best of both world while we pay and pay.

This is how it works in sg. Anything that can generate huge profits, they will not let go. And also this is the price of owning a car in sg.

Dear Rubber,

For once, I agree and support your posting ......

This is life, money talks .... it is a fact.... everywhere in the world is the same. The rich will enjoy the luxury in life.

I have mentioned many many times, it is not the government's responsibilty to ensure that every Singaporean can afford to buy a car or every Singaporeans should have a equal opportunity to own a car regardless of race, income etc etc. It is the government's responsibility to provide basic transportation for all Singaporeans which can be improved.... IMO, our basic transportation system is good enough, not the best in the world but decent enough.... Just cross the causeway and compared their transportation system there.

Back to basic .... cannot afford a brand new car on current COE prices, there is still the option of COE Cars (more than 10 years) or second car that is within the budget. Current COE prices are for new cars, there is a price range for different budget so why must insist/talk about buying a new car now.

Finally, get real, the rich will get richer and they can afford to buy their third, forth, fifth cars ..... For most middle income, there is still a choice on whether to spend all your income paying for a car. Everyone have a choice and please stop whining ....

When COE was low...people complaint....say COE must be as high as in the 90's. Now COE is high, people also complaint....say must be low. So how? :D :D

The first grp is the rich ppl, they r the one that already own a car in the 80s, 90s, enjoying smooth traffic, ample car park lot, no erp etc., driving is an enjoyment, of coz they will complain of coe too cheap and want the coe to increase to a pt that will prevent any tom dick and harry to buy a car to clog up the road and traffic they once enjoy.

The second grp is the tom dick and harry, they only able to own their first car during the cheap coe period, they enjoy the convenience of a car bring to their life, they at last can realise their dream of owning a luxury items that they once only can dream of... of coz they will complain of coe getting too ex as they no longer can afford a car once their 10 yrs coe up.

So its two different grp of ppl complaining.

If B&B cars r MB, BMW, Lexus, Audi n VW... then what is Thaiyota, Honthai, Nissin, SuBaru, Susuki, DaJitSu, MiSubishit, Chery, Hyundai, Kia?

Hello,

Did you read my posting ? I mentioned Merc, BMW, Toyata, VW and Audi as B&B cars based on new cars registered in Y2012 ...... Not based on the overall car population in Singapore.

Quite true. I think there are basically 2 groups of people owning car in sg. Esp the bulk number of car owners on the road now should belong to the 'tom dick and harry group. [:p] Which is why many will complaint current COE is way too high, cause the high COE has deter this group of people of changing car, and buying another car when their current car reach 10 years.

I believe if people belong to the first group, these people would not bother much on the price of the COE, cause these people will still be able to change car or buy car, no matter how much the COE will be.
