Mllcg 3rd Gear May 10, 2012 Author Share May 10, 2012 I do not have this model of NAS, but if you are talking about external access, you'll have to watch out the following. Starhub blocks port 80 and 21 to prevent people from hosting web and ftp servers. I believe other ISPs should be doing the same thing. So your only solution is to change these default port numbers to something else, eg 2121 (ftp) and 8080 (web). Then port forward the port and your internal ip. Once done, type http://<wan ip>:8080 or ftp:// <wan ip>:2121 in your web browser. You should be able access your nas externally. If still can't, check to make sure your WAN IP address is correct. yeah. did that. still cant. i type both http and ftp. for now, im letting the NAS rot ↡ Advertisement
Bystander50 5th Gear May 10, 2012 Share May 10, 2012 Yupz!!! Some Sh!t about the uPnP...... I tried to google for the config that time and I managed to find a guy that posted something but I tried to follow the config but still not successful...... But my primary objective was more for backup and wireless access. So I wasn't too peeved that the remote access wasn't working. Actually I wonder any IT security folks here will caution against allowing remote access into the NAS. Might be opening up a huge gaping hole into our private network. Unless there are known bugs on the NAS firmware, it's pretty safe to permit remote access via the Internet. Of course you've to ensure that your usernames and passwords are not easily guessed. If you still want to access your files remotely but fear of being hacked, then go the VPN way. If you srt up VPN on your network, you don't even need to do those port forwarding stuffs. All you need to know is your WAN IP. Go buy the WRT54GL router and flash to dd-WRT. It has built in VPN capabilities.

Some sites are not able to detect your real WAN IP. Your router setup page may have the WAN IP. I'm using a very old Linksys NAS on Starhub. No problem at all using the methods I mentioned. But now I've switched to using VPN, so my nas is taken off the port forwarding method and can only access via VPN.
Happily1986 5th Gear May 10, 2012 Share May 10, 2012 my BB never blocked ports. under viewqwest. need some help nonsense. certain ports sure tio block. even if they don't care about your home computers, they at least care about their backend. one advice. whatever telephony based service sure will ride on networking protocols and these in turn depends on ports. Whatever ports you choose, MAKE SURE they are open. Use websites which allow check on ports to verify. Also, verify that your router is not blocking the ports themselves as well. Fireball0088 5th Gear May 10, 2012 Share May 10, 2012 Use complicated username and passwords. Set up folder permissions. If your nas can do logging, then read the logs for abnormal activities. If u wan ur NAS to be accessible to outside den have to accept the risks lor haha.. Network security is very simply.. Ur house door can open rite? if can open ppl can break in.. Set up proper passwords etc etc lor. basic security habits like dont use admin as ur username or user. Use something like [name][dob] etc. Thanks guys for the advice. ↡ Advertisement
