  2. A 78-year-old retiree was fined S$3,000 for setting his neighbour's cat on fire. His act caused the cat to foam at the mouth. It also left the cat's face, neck and back badly burnt. Chua Tuang Seng, a father of two, pleaded guilty to the charge and will have to serve a jail term of two months if he cannot pay the fine. He committed the offence along the corridor outside his flat in Pasir Ris Drive on September 3 last year. Chua was sprinkling kerosene around his potted plants to get rid of ants when he noticed the tabby cat hiding among the plants. He believed the cat had defecated frequently outside his flat. He used a broom to chase the cat away but it hid below a metal shelf. Chua then squirted kerosene on it, lit a piece of newspaper and threw it towards the cat. The badly-burnt animal was later found foaming at the mouth by the sister of its owner, Mdm Salman Mohd Aris. The 49-year-old woman made a police report. The cat was sent to Mt Pleasant Veterinary Centre for examination. The cat suffered from swollen eyelids, skin loss at the neck, and singed fur and was hospitalised for four days. Chua, who suffers from throat and colon cancer, pleaded for leniency. District Judge Ng Peng Hong pointed out that Chua's act was "not right". He ordered Chua to pay Mdm Salman S$1,235 as compensation for medical costs incurred as result of his act. For the abuse, he could have been jailed up to a year and fined S$10,000. 4. NIMBY Version 3.0 [shakehead] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1260600/1/.html Petition against setting up of childcare centre at rooftop garden By Lip Kwok Wai | Posted: 17 March 2013 2214 hrs Ow Bin Bing SINGAPORE: Some Punggol residents are petitioning against the set-up of a childcare centre at the rooftop garden of a multi-storey carpark. A closed-door dialogue session was held with residents on Sunday. It's understood that officers from the HDB and the Social and Family Development Ministry were also present. Some residents told Channel NewsAsia they were informed about the plans to set up the centre at Block 180 Edgefield Plains, last week. Some were concerned about the safety of the children, adding that there's already a childcare centre within the vicinity. Others felt that doing so goes against the government's push to allocate more green spaces within housing estates. Still, there were residents who felt the rooftop garden has been under-utilised and can be put to better use. One resident said she's garnered about 20 to 30 signatures for the petition. Ow Bin Bing said: "If the small kids - two months old baby to seven years small kids, if anything happened, how can they run for their life? Let's say if there was a fire or anything, I have been teaching for 27 years, I know the small kids are very active, if anything were to happen, who will be responsible for their safety?" When contacted, MP for the area Penny Low said there are plans to build more childcare centres in Punggol. She said some locations are suitable, while others are not. And added that ground consultations and innovative use of space are needed, to make sure residents' needs are met. - CNA/ck
  5. Please ignore the date on the video as I have not set the correct date and time. Basically this took place today evening. This lao hero wanted to go against traffic flow to exit carpark. I saw him coming from opposite direction and high beamed him to warn him of his action. After this I glide my car to the right, thinking that he will either back off, turn right or just move on with life. After that he choose to still go against traffic to exit carpark. The exciting part came next. He stopped his car in no men land and got me stuck there and then. He got out of his car like a typical lao hero and come talk kok saying that why I pointed middle finger at him. I just asked him to shut his trap as I got video camera in the car to see who is right or wrong. To son seem innocent enough, seeing the ugly side of his lao peh. I simply tell this fella who got the right of way and bang on the point that he is a danger to other drivers in car or walking in the CP. In the middle of our argument, I pointed at a gentleman standing beside my car. I simply told this lao hero that I got video evidence and witness on who is right and wrong. So don't bother to argue. This nice gentleman came over to get him to move away and get his arse back into the car. However this lao hero who might not be able to afford a luxury car start mumbling that drive luxury car big sharks izzit, stay HDB only, it is peanuts etc. What a joker. I am quite sure he can afford a luxury car as my mother teaches me not to look down on anyone. However I hope this incident can teach his son and my son what is right and wrong. Do the right thing and you won't get into awkward situation like this ever again. I would have called the cops based on my suspicion that he drink and drive. 6. Who plans their journey before setting off? Planning includes: -determining the tasks to perform..doing the furthermost tasks 1st -estimating the time needed for the journey..setting off earlier in anticipation of heavy traffic -using tools to aid in driving smoothly and less hastily eg. GPS, traffic apps, check the internet for traffic news or traffic cams -planning the route..eg. checking traffic info before setting off, think of alternative routes in case of jams and heavy traffic Does it help u in any way? For me, it helps tremendously..it enables me to drive smoothly, save fuel and frustration and also to reduce the chance of accidents..and in the event of encountering jams..i can change route easily..and also filter to the correct lane in advance to exit causing less inconvenience to others

  10. SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower is raising the salary thresholds of two groups of workers -- local full-time and skilled foreign workers -- from July this year. And with foreign worker levies increasing again, it is timely for companies such as Lerk Thai to innovate. Since December, machines have been doing the cooking at Lerk Thai's outlet in Bedok Point. In one corner, a machine works the boiler, while another handles the wok The restaurant said the food tastes the same, but the cooking is done much quicker, while manpower costs are down by 20 to 30 per cent. Sales have also been increased by between 20 and 30 per cent since the changes were introduced. Lerk Thai is one of the restaurants managed by Select Group. The company's executive director Jack Tan said: "With the whole process in place, the chef can multi-task, instead of just standing in front of the wok to look after the wok." Lerk Thai is now looking into introducing automation for future outlets. Currently, the number of foreign workers a company can employ depends on the number of full-time local staff on its payroll. To prevent companies from paying locals "token salaries" to gain access to foreign workers, from July, their benchmark salary will be raised from S$650 to S$850. This is also in line with rising wages. Minimum salaries for skilled foreigners are also going up. The S-Pass levy will also be raised, by between S$190 and S$300. Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong said this is because the S-Pass stock has "more than doubled" since 2007, which is "clearly not sustainable". For S-Pass holders, this will be set at S$2,000, up from the current S$1,800, while the three categories of Employment Pass holders will be S$2,800, S$4,000 and S$8,000. The salary threshold for Q1 passes will be raised from S$2,500 to S$2,800; that of P2 passes will go up from S$3,500 to S$4,000 and for P1 passes, the new threshold will be S$8,000, up from the current S$7,000. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1115310/1/.html hmmmm, isn't this as good as setting min. salary for foreign workers? And they say it will not work and do not wish to do it for local workers???

Rushed back home to call them after work but no human pick up leh. Anyone can give me some advise on setting up the Netgear? I can get connected with the supplied Thomson using the auto configure CD but have no idea what the other settings should be using the Netgear and can't get connected. Thanks
