Till today I will still raise my hands to say thanks to those who give way and make driving a lot more pleasant. When I give way to others...I would like to be acknowledged as well.

If you do not signal and cut into my lane...I just hope that its a safe distance and I do not need to jam my brakes. I am ok with those who do not signal...just that do so at a safe distance.

Those who do not signal and want to cut in...sorry...I am not a mind reader...I cannot read your intention and hence I will not give way to you. Likewise for queue cutter...you can signal till kingdom come...I will not yield.

So to those who still wave to acknowledge kindness...well done. Keep it up.

Hmm.. If you have been observing how SG traffic flows, some of the slow traffic flows is caused by vehicles slowing down the rest in the first lane. This can be expressways or major roads. I wouldn't say they are road hogging because they are at the speed limit. However, I feel that they should be traveling in the middle lane instead. Many of these drivers will not switch to the middle lane even though it's empty.

In this case, drivers behind these vehicles will have to overtake through the middle lane, slowing down the traffic even more. Hence, I feel that drivers should be considerate to close up the gap between the front vehicle. Not asking to tailgate, but don't leave 5 vehicle distance sort of thing.

I still wave to give thanks and give way to drivers when necessary and/or for the purpose of safety.

Strictly speaking, is it a traffic offence to change lane without signalling?

There are simply too many cars doing that. And people who signal gets penalised because inconsiderate drivers from behind starts to speed up and horn at cars who tries to change into their lanes, despite signalling their intention early. This encourages people not to signal, which ultimately makes it more dangerous for all road users.

If there is space in Lane 2 or 3 continuing to stay in Lane 3 when vehicles are approaching fast up behind you is regarded as road hogging, whether you are driving below the limit, at the limit or above the limit. The basic principle is, if someone else wants to drive faster than you and there is space to the left, move over. It is all about relative speed, those in the right lane should be overtaking those in the 2nd lane and those in the 2nd lane should be overtaking those in the 3rd lane. It is not another driver's job to "educate" others or block them by driving just at the speed limit on the right lane. That is the job of the traffic police.

Now if there are vehicles lined up with no space in the second lane and someone approaches fast from behind, as long as you are overtaking the vehicles in the 2nd lane reasonably quickly, you don't need to move over until there is a clear gap in the second lane. The driver behind you would also be able to see the queue in the second lane and understand. Unless he is one of those crazy drivers with ants up his ass who die die must get in front, swerving unpredictably into whatever lane at high speed to overtake all cars in front at all cost. In that case, if it is safe to do so, just get his number and report to TP. After TP get a few reports on the same driver, they will surely issue demerit points or take away his license. Unless he disables his car first through an accident.

It's really hard to classify them as road hogging because if you tell them they aren't driving fast enough, they will tell you "Look, I'm at the speed limit."

When I was riding a bike years ago, I got many cars cutting into the middle lane because they wanted to overtake the vehicle on the first lane. Turns out that middle lane is more dangerous than the first lane.

this is so true too

i like to stay in lane 1

becos you only need to look out for cars coming in from the left

(touch wood... no falling banches theory)

but when you are in lane 2

you got both sides to worry......

whcih kuku will cut in from either side.

but thats SG.

i'm sure its not so bad already

no need to wave hands... your not driving lorry.

if your experience enough you can just wait until one gives way or slowly move a bit by bit untill the other cars from back cannot go in

this will work even when no one give you way in to the lane

the reason why i started this...

i consider myself quite a new driver, having only recently removed my P plate.

a lot of times i find that drivers tend to slot themselves in callously.

it almost feel like they take for granted that they have right to the space at the lane they are entering.

when i first started driving, i try as best as possible to show my appreciation with the lifted hand in the rear mirror whenever i am allowed to cut in.

slowly this faded away when i noticed no one else actually does it, and i am also gradually becoming jaded.

day in day out, in peak hr traffic, this scene repeats itself.

i think we all drivers belong to a community, and we gotta work together and cooperate to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow.

once a while we speed and toe with the laws, i guess that's fine.

but during dangerous times like peak hours, jams from accidents/breakdowns, heavy rain, slippery roads, we gotta work together.

sorry to be sermonising so early in the morning but i just wanted to let this off my chest, from the perspective of a relatively new driver.

and i certainly hope not to pick up other bad habits like not signalling my intent to filter/turn or high-beaming any-o-how just to get a right of way.

100% correct. just don't make people horn or jam brakes.

even in traffic jam, just move slowly. give people time, if this dont give way the others will.
