Red packet = Corruption?

If it's chinese new year period, and your customer/contractor gives you a red packet with $$$ inside..

It is considered corruption under the law to accept it?

Most friends of similar age groups don't give red packets to one another during CNY.

Second, yes it is considered inappropriate, and if you're doing something in return then it'd be classified as corruption.

The law is very clear. If someone gives you something, and you're accused of corruption, the only thing the prosecuter would have to do is to prove that you've done something in return.

If you can prove that you did nothing in return, or that there was no expectation of you to do so in the process of giving you the gift, then they cannot say you were bribed. BUT, it's a long drawn out process and your reputation would've taken a beating either way.

So it's at best inappropriate. At best. And if you explain to the person giving, he/she will definitely understand. The only reason I can think of that they'd be offended, is that they do indeed want you to favour them in one way or another.
