last night got home and my wifi cannot connect ... tried my wired connection on my pc, also cannot connect.

called M1 and after 12 mins of waiting, the helpdesk answered my call.

told them my ONT is on and the RG(residential gatewate router) is also on ... only thing is the "internet" light is not on.

told me that the RG is faulty but they do not have stocks for replacement at the moment ... and maybe only available AFTER CNY !!!

told me can go take a loaner mobile BB(MBB) router from their shop but gotta pay the sim card fee, which they will offset from my home BB bill "later". but the MBB only output 4mbps ! over my FBB of 25mpbs.

pull out my old cable router to try but cannot work.

anyone encounter their M1 RG faulty and then came up with alternative connection method ?

you mentioned internet led is "not on", not lit on RG only?

If that's the case just temporary use a N router and plug into your ONT. In fact, this arrangement can be yours permanently. Get a good N router and rid yourself of the crappy RG for good (its wireless performance is abysmal anyway)

btw I am on M1 Fibre and this arrangement has been mine all the way from day 1.

worst part is not confirmed if after CNY can get or not even .... !!??

I had same problem wth my SH FBB recently too... called them and was told they can only send their technician down 1 week later....told the cust rep "then can i don't pay for the internet for 1 week??!!" and showed my displeasure....I admit i was very hostile (because of another issues i had with SH concurrently about my coporate buy) and suddenly he say next day the technician will come to my place to change out the modem..

So if i just keep quiet, I will have to be inconvinienced for 1 week??

If only the RG is faulty, you can connect a LAN cable directly to the ONT box and it should work.

If not, get a cheapo wireless router from Sim Lim Square, and it should work as well. If the ONT is old type, you only lose the land line, everything else should work.

Not all telcos allow you to do that. Starhub does VLAN tagging so you have to use their RG.

that's exactly my concern ... only afraid that if i bought a router outside then try to replace the M1 RG, cannot work, then $$ down the drain.

but per Happilly1986, are you using own modem router bought outside ? can cfm if i just anyhow buy one outside can just plug and replace ?

what if i get VOIP modem router ... like the Motorola one from SH ? saw someone selling one on the net ... will i maintain my voice line also ?

Just to verify, yes i am on M1 Fibre 100Mbps and my ONT is the white one Huawei HG863. Anyway if the RG is not optional (i.e. compulsory) then they wouldn't have asked me at point of signup whether i wish to rent from them $2/month already. [laugh]

But i don't use VOIP as i am still on the old analogue landed line. Give me the motorola VOIP model and i see whether i can check for you whether it works for your case i.e. support m1 VOIP.

but you dun have VOIP what ...

what about the part of you saying that SH does VLAN tagging ... do they tag their modem routers so other telcos cannot use them ?

ok, for the most part, M1 doesn't do VLAN tagging, that is true. HOWEVER, once you have both fibre broadband and VOIP, M1 have to do VLAN tagging so that the packets can be diverted correctly to the phone and to the computers/smartphones. In this case, i am sorry to say that you need the RG because the latter performs VLAN tagging.

You could try to sniff out your own SIP address and do the VLAN tagging on your third party VLAN tagging capable router but server authentication over at Qala/M1 will make it hard to work.

just terminated my SH FBB over the weekend ... paid a $32.10 termination fee.

I dun understand why they want to "draw a snake and add legs" ... why should they charge a termination fee ?? if don't want to pay the fee, then have to continue to be with them until they close down ???

wonder what IDA thinks ?
