According to Chery's head office statement, there's a new recall notice affecting 8,878 units of the Omoda 5 due to the rear axel failure incidents over the causeway. Car News China article is here: https://carnewschina.com/2026/10/12/chery-recalls-omoda-c5-due-to-detached-axle-for-the-second-time-in-malaysia/

So the initial recall of 600 units by Chery in 2024 has now expanded, by more than an order of magnitude. I.e. more than 10x from 0.6k --> 8.9k. How could Chery get this so wrong?

Even if Chery says that there's been a change in the rear suspension design from torsion beam to multi-link setup, why would JPJ suspend registrations of new Omoda 5 over the causeway that have the multi-link setup? Obviously JPJ doesn't believe Chery.

Below is snapshot of Chery Omoda 5 sales over the causeway.

Up to September 2025 there are 15,422 units of the Omoda 5 registered on the road that has the torsion beam rear suspension set up. So just 8,878 of these units have defective welding issues? That's a defect rate of more than 57%!💩 Chery must have known this back in April 2024 when the first rear axel failure happened. Who in their right mind would continue to sell rides knowing there's more than 1/2 chance the wheels can literally fall off? Something is not right within Chery.

Would wait until the dust settles on this before considering a Chery sub-brand model.

Yeah this is shocking, it hurts the brand image significantly. No one in their right mind would buy a Chery now with how they have been handling this.

An example of a Made in China (MiC) Chery vehicle that got zero star safety rating from an independent crash test agency - this time in Latin America and Caribbian NCAP.

The Chery Tiggo 2 / Tiggo 2 Pro / Tiggo 2 Pro Max and Chirey Tiggo 2, produced in China, was rated with zero stars. The Tiggo 2 that offers 4 airbags achieved:

  • 0% in Adult Occupant;
  • 0% in Child Occupant;
  • 48.89% in Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users; and
  • 45.45% in Safety Assist.

The above are based on the older and less stringent test standard. The 2026 test standards are much harder to pass.
