Sputnik Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Share September 16, 2003 Hi all ! Just got a set of 215/45/17 today and found that I need to rev harder to pick-up and somehow feel that the power isn't really being transferred from engine to tyres. Is it normal for new tyres to take some time before they can become "stickier"? Which I feel is most likely the cause of my drop in pick-up. Cheers ! ↡ Advertisement

Mondeost220 Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Share September 16, 2003 wah...17inch...215..kinda big if ur car is 1.6L...
Sputnik Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Author Share September 16, 2003 Galant 2.0 VRG Was using this size previously and don't have any problems so far. The stock tire was 15".
Assassin Clutched September 16, 2003 Share September 16, 2003 Might be the rims + tyres are heavy...thus causing the drop in performance. When upsizing, try to keep the weight of the rims down as much as possible so as not to affect performance.
Mondeost220 Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Share September 16, 2003 fuel consumption would definitely increase..but cornering ability wld be considering lowering your ride?
Sputnik Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Author Share September 16, 2003 (edited) Am still using the same set of 17" rims, just that with the change of tires, the feel is different from my "seasoned" tires. Yeah...could definitely save some fuel if I use lighter and smaller rims. Still manageable at around 9.5km/l (Galants ranges from 8-11km/l). Cornering is indeed stable, but this is one car that isn't exactly that fast even with mods. Yes ride is already lowered. Arkaneslayer Neutral Newbie September 16, 2003 Share September 16, 2003 wah u change from 195/60-15 to 215/45-17 ... sure look but performance sure suffer since u +2 new tyres maybe got more grip/drag perhaps - what tyres were u using b4 and what tyres did u change to? maybe 205/45-17 would be less draggy? Virus 2nd Gear September 17, 2003 Share September 17, 2003 Could be the tire weight or the air-pressure. New tire is thicker than old, so heavier. Underinflate tire will be draggy too. Just my 0.02 cts.
Modeldriver Neutral Newbie September 17, 2003 Share September 17, 2003 Galant 2.0 VRG Was using this size previously and don't have any problems so far. The stock tire was 15". I agree with Assassin.... very likely the weight of your rims and tyres. What rims/tyres did you get ? My own experience when I switched rims (both 17") but same tyres, found that a 1.5 to 2kg difference per rim made tons of difference.
Modeldriver Neutral Newbie September 17, 2003 Share September 17, 2003 believe the weight of the rims are probably the bigger culprit than the additional 20mm.
Assassin Clutched September 17, 2003 Share September 17, 2003 Try waiting until after the scrub in period to see if it changes for the better.
Sputnik Neutral Newbie September 17, 2003 Author Share September 17, 2003 Scrubbing ... learnt this term from my friend today. New tires take awhile for them to take effect, and yes Day 02 saw a marked improvement. P.S : Again, I did not change rims, just tires only. I have been using the 17" rims for a year already. Already used to the consequences of heavier rims !
Phochem Neutral Newbie September 17, 2003 Share September 17, 2003 Performance tyres weights 1-3 kg heavier than norm tyres. Checkout Sept Motoring , it featured BS Pontenza S-03 PP and Pirelli P3000 Energy. The Continental PremiumContact and Pirelli P3000 Energy got a weight diff of 2.3kg for a 14" tyres. A 15" S-03 weights 9kg.
Modeldriver Neutral Newbie September 20, 2003 Share September 20, 2003 yep.... but I thought the scrubbing was more for enhanced grip ???
Worker Neutral Newbie September 23, 2003 Share September 23, 2003 I am not surprised that Sputnik felt a loss of power after his tyre change . I had the same feeling after I changed my tyres recently . Straight away the car felt sluggish . I had changed to a higher performance model tyre with better grip. I can feel the big difference in the rolling resistance of the tyre when I push the car . Scrubbing will not make you regain the lost power , infact it should be even worse as the tyres can now grip even better . As the saying goes , U can't have your cake and eat it .
