Turbocharged Neutral Newbie February 2, 2002 Share February 2, 2002 Age old trick. But few tried. It was derived from rally experience in desert. Great improvement, now even can be ctrl by ecu. pour in 50% methanol and 50% water, you get voila! i imported 1 set before but from Spearco. Turbocharged car less expensive.. DoctorDrake Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Author Share February 3, 2002 Are you still using it? Any comments about performance gains?
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Share February 3, 2002 Firstly, this fancy device DOES NOT INCREASE POWER What? Why? Or Why not U may ask...... Well, it does not improve power directly but allows a turbo car to be boosted higher as it's actually injecting an anti-knock agent (water/alcohol) into the intake mixture. Sorta like an octane booster but with control. I was quoted by the local distributor for Aquamist the following prices: System 1S - $790 System 2S - $1440 Whao! Expensive sxxt man! DoctorDrake Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Author Share February 3, 2002 OK. There are better things to do with that money! Sigh. So many toys, so little money.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Share February 3, 2002 Yeah, most aftermarket ECU mods need only RON98 max. Any higher and you'll probably need to strenghten the engine component first (e.g. connecting rods, pistons, cooling, etc.)
Turbocharged Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Share February 3, 2002 No i did not test it personally. the car was driven by another frn who put in on non-turbo car. Seriously speaking.. hp gain or not, i cannot confirm. but think this way.. cooler water vapor in mist form flow into combustion chamber with air intake, and mix with petrol at combustion side. purpose is to cool down the hot air so that colder air which is more dense, carry more oxygen volume (is this the right term?) than when it is hot. More oxygen = as good as manipulating ecu to burn more petrol thru O2 sensor = power gain? Why add methanol? Becoz methanol has the property of evaporation, causing the mist to vaporise as it flow into the combustion chamber. therefore, by the time the mist leave the nozzle to combustion chamber, it would have done its job of cooling down the air intake/charge air in turbocharge case, and need not be burn with the mixture. and there will be no worry of moisture rusting the pistons. Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 3, 2002 Share February 3, 2002 On the contary, I have a brick kaki who mounted the spearco water injection kit into his 850T5 and did not feel much power gain but the response on a hot day is like driving at night. So here goes: Although the air is cooled by the injected water/alcohol the density of air is lessen due to the "space" taken up by the water/alcohol with the air so in essence U have slightly less but cooler air be charged into the cylinders, so oxygen density may increase but volume has definitely decreased (slightly).....whew! Ghostrider 3rd Gear February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 Works sort of like a intercooler ?? I thought the use of aquamist is to lower the operating temp of the engine to increase lesser chance of pinging & improve the performance of the engine. For non turbo cars, they are mainly used for high compression engine as these engine can run mighty hot under hard driving condition.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 Not exactly like an intercooler although the charge air temp may drop but the volume of air also drops due to the water mist taking up some volume. It does help reduce pinging and knocking in highly tuned or boosted engines.
Tantt70 Neutral Newbie February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 Sounded like the Thermal exhaust coating which keeps the engine cool and the car moves like its in the night even though its operating under the hot sun. Difference being that thermal barrier cost less than $200. On the contary, I have a brick kaki who mounted the spearco water injection kit into his 850T5 and did not feel much power gain but the response on a hot day is like driving at night. Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 Whao! The Thermal barrier coating is a totally different application. That's on the exhaust manifold and pipe rather than the intake air cooling. Check out the exhaust wraps thread instead.
Skoda_Man Neutral Newbie February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 The water mist helps to cool down the air intake spooling. More cold air = better output. Simple as that in theory
Ghostrider 3rd Gear February 4, 2002 Share February 4, 2002 That one I know lah....cooler air got more O2 than hot air mah.... But for 1K plus just to inject some mist into the engine....beri expensive modification that yields little bhp.....not bang for buck !! IMHO, unless you have really souped up your car big time (FI = Upboost & NA = High Comp).....aquamist is a waste of money.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 5, 2002 Share February 5, 2002 You're right, the aquamist system is more like a investment for protection against engine damage from high boost or high compression, power yield is very marginal.
Legacyb4 Neutral Newbie February 5, 2002 Share February 5, 2002 Anyone here int. to DIY water mister spray system?
