My is recommended at 15k but I do it every 5k due to a lot of city driving. Sometimes change earlier because after 10 months still have not clocked 10K. Even if my recommended is 5K, still changed at 10K. Have done that for many years. When the mechanic asked when the last oil change was done. The lady don't even know that the oil need to change. The car was about 5 years. Imagine 5 years and no oil change, champion hor. Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 17, 2002 Author Share February 17, 2002 I've read some article stating that is the oil is not changed for a year, get it changed irregardless of mileage. So 10months is still within the margin I guess. Once with Synthetic, 10+k or 1 year shouldn't be a big issue. As expected, it broke on him n he had a big bill for a major overhaul. His car was so badly maintained that even my hyundai 1.5 auto cud outrun him. For mineral oil I normally practice 5K, but once I tried 8K without problem on premium quality mineral oil. It was a Citroen BX 16V. Fortunately I was just taking off at the lights at the Killiney Road/River Valley Road junction. There was a dull thud, followed by "ping ping ping ping...." Result, a top overhaul and $$$$. All valves changed, but pistons OK coz the engine was only starting to rev up. I know a guy who used to drive the alfa 33 1.5 n didnt change his timing belt. As expected, it broke on him n he had a big bill for a major overhaul. His car was so badly maintained that even my hyundai 1.5 auto cud outrun him. Try my mechanic's Datsun (yes...its a Datsun) loaner man......he farking bochup on that car one and it never break down !!! Servicing ?? What mineral or syn oil....he uses USED OIL from other cars to service the car !! And still the car is running fine......wonder what kinda technology they were using way back then.....engine is like bulletproof man !! Ha ha ha ha For me....Syn oil man......10K change oil plus filter. Used to change filter and top up a little of the oil every 5K mark but my mechanic told me that its a waste of money.....so now I stick to 10K mark. So far so good. Diver Neutral Newbie February 19, 2002 Share February 19, 2002 I guess in the past ... EVERYTHING was made more durable ... but not necessarily better ... nowadays its the direct opposite. My thoughts are ... in the past, consumers were generally less financially abled. Thus things had to be made more durable in order to attract them to buy ... resulting in long sales cycle and low revenue. Now, consumers are more affluent. Thus things have to be "made" better (more features, acronym, etc) in order to attract them to buy. However, it does not necessarily mean it is as durable as before. This ensured that sales cycle is shorter ... leading to higher revenue. At the end of the day ... it boils down to one question ... which is the greater of two evil? I still miss the good o'le carb man.....practically maintaince free and easy to play around with it !! My last car that still had a carb was the Legacy GL.........gessss miss that old banger man !! Newer cars also comes with plastic intake manifold like new merc, VW, Corolla. etc etc. i cant imagine when the car kenna impact. My father used to say this....
