Petrolnut Neutral Newbie February 27, 2004 Share February 27, 2004 i know the compression ratio will increase after the head is skimmed, but how much can one skimmed without causing damage to the engine when running ?? ↡ Advertisement
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie February 27, 2004 Share February 27, 2004 That's not a safe way to increase compression, a stroker kit will probably be a better foolproof way to gain compression. A stroker kit usually consist of longer connecting rods and new pistons plus stuff like gaskets, etc.
Saaber Neutral Newbie February 28, 2004 Share February 28, 2004 to just increase compression, it can be done by using a thinner cylinderhead gasket or changing to pistons with higher domes....
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie February 28, 2004 Share February 28, 2004 "after the head is skimmed" Hi! there, PetrolNut, To skim the engine block or head is a cheap way to increase compression. Once done, there's no turning back and undo it. You ask how much to skim?? If you question it, then don't do it. Whenever you want to do such mods, there's no such thing as try and see. Tuning houses have already tried & tested everything that they put up for sale. All specs & figures are not just pluck from someone's imagination. Countless hours on the dyno, racetracks give you the finished product, plus the pile of junk that they threw away. R&D can easily take a year to come up with a reliable product. That's a year of w/shop time. Rgds Paul Yong
Petrolnut Neutral Newbie February 28, 2004 Author Share February 28, 2004 i've just blown the head gasket, and the head's flatness is slightly off. So can i just i) skim the head & use back 0ne gasket, therefore slightly increasing the CR, or ii)skim the head & use 2 gaskets in order to maintain the original CR ? If both solutions are not workable, then does it mean that i must get myself a new cylinder head ??
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie February 28, 2004 Share February 28, 2004 "If both solutions are not workable" Hi! there, PetrolNut, You're saying the cylinder head is warped?? Check with the machine-shop, how much is off, also, what's the tolerance allowed for that cyl head, as you'll need to skim on both the top & bottom. Using 2 head gasket is not advisable, check if there're thicker ones in the market. Head work is a major operation, so you'll have to consider the labour cost. Check the price for a used cyl head. You might find that it's cheaper to buy a whole engine instead. Rgds Paul Yong
Saaber Neutral Newbie February 29, 2004 Share February 29, 2004 BTW, what car are you driving??
Normal_aspirated Clutched February 29, 2004 Share February 29, 2004 I agree with Paul not to skim your engine for higher compression. If you want more power, change the engine and its cheaper. Alas, it's illegal.

Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie March 1, 2004 Share March 1, 2004 I had a good run with a H.Prelude, before breakfast at the prata shop. He sneaked up on Cliff's car, but I was more alert. So, Cliff got front row seat for a 2nd time. Rgds Paul Yong

Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie March 1, 2004 Share March 1, 2004 No leh! He didn't catch up close enough. Cliff says he used his brakes all the time, I did it sometime. I was driving an AR146 boxer, with wrong wheels, very bouncy shocks too. Rgds Paul Yong

Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie March 1, 2004 Share March 1, 2004 "you got good massage" Very tiring drive, had to do Italian tune-up, not enough power for overtaking. Until I red-line all the way to K.Tinggi. Rgds Paul Yong
