Stary Turbocharged May 10, 2004 Share May 10, 2004 Hi guys, I have two mountain bikes and was thinking of ways to transport them in a car. My prefered way is to use a bracket and put the two bikes hanging behind the car. But the question is where can I get this bracket and whether if it is legal to transport bicycles this way? Last I want is to dismantle the bikes. Any other suggestions? Thanks ↡ Advertisement
Orangie Neutral Newbie May 10, 2004 Share May 10, 2004 You'll need a bicycle rack. Mount the blkes on it and strap them down. Dun need to dismantle the bikes. Just make sure the wheels do not hit the car. Can get the rack in most leading departmental stores. Got mine from a IMM some time ago. Should cost around $80. Not sure if its legal, but a TP zoom past me once when I ferry my bikes that way Hope it helps
Virus 2nd Gear May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 Not sure is it legal ?? But tie a red cloth on the bike should help.
Nismoman Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 I got roof racks mounted on my ride. You can get them from Pro-RV at Serangoon Plaza. Done >100km/h no problem. You just have to be careful of your height clearance

You just have to be careful of your height clearance My only concern about putting the bikes behind is that it blocks the number plate of the car...so maybe it's not legal. Putting it on the roof sounds feasible, but it is difficult to install those rack on the car roof? Is it expensive to have that? Also, it is easy to take down those racks when I dun need to mount my bikes on it? Thanks
Genie47 1st Gear May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 Just take the bicycle rack option. Cheaper and you don't have to install roof racks which BTW, do affect your FC a lot.
Nismoman Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 It's not difficult to install/remove them Most people use roof racks for surf boards and bikes. Some contractors use them to carry ladders and pipes. I keep them on my car because I don't have any spare room at home to store them. Check out Thule (www.thule.com). They are suppose to make the best ones around. They even have fittings to carry canoes. But they don't come cheap. check out www.pro-rv.com.sg they bring in Thule Carriers that hang on the trunk are cheaper but don't seem as firm. If that's a concern, just stick with the boot mounted ones. I've used those boot mounted bike racks for about 3 years now without any problems. It does block the number plate depending on your car model but most times I think TP close 1 eye. They may seem flimsy but they're actually quite safe, have carried 3 bikes on mine before. Wankie Clutched May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 ok...but where can I find those boot mounted bike racks? Also, how do you secure the rack? By tying a rope? Most bicycle shops have the boot mounted racks. The racks come with nylon harnesses and hooks for attaching onto your boot, something like those you see on backpacks. You can try Hup Leong at Chin Swee Road or Treknology at Holland Grove.
