Spotty Neutral Newbie October 24, 2002 Share October 24, 2002 Hi Fellow Fabia Owners, Lately, i have been hearing some squeaky noise at speeds of 80 km and above, like something has gone loose or not attached properly but definitely oming from the front. However, can't seem to pin point from where exactly since it only happens at higher speeds. Am wondering if anyone has encountered this? Please share or any advice ? Thanks. spotty. ↡ Advertisement
Sky8807 1st Gear October 24, 2002 Share October 24, 2002 Hi Spotty, Did not experience that but suspect is not from the car itself. Firstly, sound travel in all directions, especially in the car environment, u thought it come from the front and actually it was reflected from the front. It is very difficult to pin point sound and noise in a car. My suspect is something external, like plastic bag rubbing, or item not properly secured. check all the items in your car and see whether anything loose lying around, including the back seat area and boot. Sometimes the material you wear can also cause squeky sound. Hope u find the culprit.
Spotty Neutral Newbie October 24, 2002 Author Share October 24, 2002 Hi Sky, Thanks for the pointers but i have wound down my window, and put my ear near the side mirror to hear the noise while driving at 80 km and above. And it sure is there from outside.....my concern is that why only at that speed which prompted me to question if there is indeed something wrong somewhere? It has been going on for about 1 month already and unfortunately, i have not found time to send car in for inspection....before i cry foul... thot i check with SOGs to see if anyone has encountered this and hwat could possibly be the cause.... regards, spotty. Sky8807 1st Gear October 24, 2002 Share October 24, 2002 Oh I see, if from outside, then probably from the wheel areas. Anyway, I always drive with windows up. One month already, wander how u come to noticed the noise in the first place. Windows up can hear the noise or not? For info, the sport rims in front, require special type of weight (small & thin) otherwise it will scrape the brake housing when moving. Hope you did not do any wheel balancing lately. Anyway, that is special attention should you do front wheel balancing. I'll take note next time I drive, maybe also have the noise and not realising it. Or maybe the brake pads, if you do braking and check again, is the noise still there.
Spotty Neutral Newbie October 24, 2002 Author Share October 24, 2002 Nope, did not do any wheel balancing. I first heard the noise when i switched off my radio and decided to enjoy fresh air while driving. I did not used to hear these noises last time when i drove with the windows down. Come to think of it, it was probably sometime after my 20K servicing that i discovered the sounds. My brakes have also been screeching a little when coming to a stop. But the noises could not have been linked right? most strange!
Sky8807 1st Gear October 24, 2002 Share October 24, 2002 The brakes can emit such noises also. Since you mentioned about the screeching noise. High chance coming from there. My experience many years back, while driving civic, where the brake pad are nearing its limit, driving above 80km/h all the way to 120km/h high pitch squeeking and at times screeching noise could be heard during the drive, wind down the windows, wow very loud, blur for a while. When I check the wheel there is no binding the wheel rotate normally. After changing my brake pads, very thin and nearly finish the noise disappear completely. Don't know whether it was design to let you know that the pad are worn and need to change at that time. Another possibilities is when the brakes pad is disturbed, there is an anti-rattle spring or clip to prevent the brakes pads from vibrating, if it was not installed properly can also cause the noise. Anyway, fabia brakes pads very thick, unlikely to wear off so fast, unless you braking is fierce. . Need to check your brakes asap. Chances of pad touching the disc while wheel rotating is high. As long as the brakes is not binding, safe, do check your brakes pad to see if it is in place.

Spotty Neutral Newbie October 25, 2002 Author Share October 25, 2002 Hi, Good morning! Thank you very much for your advice and pointers. Your comments have been most enlightening. Did not think that the brakes and noise could be linked. Will probably check the brake pads again. best regards, spotty.
Spotty Neutral Newbie October 25, 2002 Author Share October 25, 2002 hmmm fan belt.... that is always one of my sore points. Remember i used to tell JTA that my aircon is louder than others....have since become immuned to it....But last check during servicing was ok. anyway, will also get this checked just in case. Thanks! Sky8807 1st Gear November 2, 2002 Share November 2, 2002 (edited) Hi Spotty, This morning on the way to work, try to detect any squeak on the expressway but to no avail, then got chance to travel on quite stretch of road with min traffic, heard a little metallic squeak sound when wind down both windows, not intrusive when you don't pay particular attention to it. Guess could be same kind of noise you heard but at a lower decibel. I will KIV it, don't think it serious and have any safety implication. How is your squeaky noise, any actions so far. cheers. Spotty Neutral Newbie November 5, 2002 Author Share November 5, 2002 Hi Sky, Thanks for testing your car! For me, the squeaky noise is rather loud still there at 80Km and above. Because, when i drop the speed below 80KM mark, the sound disappears. I can hear it with my windows up. I am going to send it to CA for check this week. Do they charge for diagnosis? regards. Sky8807 1st Gear November 5, 2002 Share November 5, 2002 Hi Spotty, Everything also charge, diagnosis or troubleshooting also have to pay. As long as you leave the car in the workshop. If test drive to detect the noise maybe free. So why not ask them to go test drive to detect the noise first. At least there is a reference point. I would not worry too much about the noise, suspected it may be cause by rotating components, like tyre, rims, etc.
Sky8807 1st Gear November 5, 2002 Share November 5, 2002 Look like nothing wrong, just aging that's all. As long as there is no oil leak, no worries.
Sky8807 1st Gear November 6, 2002 Share November 6, 2002 Yesterday, on the way back home, managed to have oppurtunity to check it out and noticed a high pitch squeak noise above 80km/hr. Most obvious when you drive near the edge of the road. From my observation and judgment, just noise make by the sound wave from the wheel area. I also have heard this noise before on other car. Will not bother unless it is intrusive and beyond tolerence. Try to simulate on the e-way, but wind is blowing strong so noise is being covered and suppresed by the blowing of the wind. cheers
Redcar Neutral Newbie January 31, 2003 Share January 31, 2003 Hi, Spotty. Could be from the dash board. If it is, try and stuff a piece of cloth in between the dash board and the windscreen. It might help. ↡ Advertisement
