Presea 3rd Gear October 29, 2002 Share October 29, 2002 (edited) I was on my way to fetch my wife (from a wedding) this evening....driving down Hougang Ave towards East Coast (wedding at Paramount), when I see a yellow EG6 at the traffic lights. I was caught behind a slow vehicle, so I never got to have a closer look, but I did spy an oversized tailpipe. Just where the new detour was (from Hougang to Eunos), a bunch of TP bikes had pulled over at the side of the road, with a tow truck as well (I wonder what kind of sting operation involves a tow truck)....so he slowed down, and as I was trying to catch up with him (overtaking the stupid lorry going at 30kmh on the left) I almost missed seeing them, but managed to keep my speed below 60 throughout the detour portion... I actually wanted to catch up through the bends at high speed....because there was no traffic in front of the lorry...only the Civic. The Civic driver was even more "kuai".. going at 50 or less. This allowed me to get infront of him at the junction with Airport Road. As it was late in the evening (about 9+), the traffic was relatively light along Eunos link , yet not that clear, requiring me to filter in order to pass the slower vehicles along the way. I had the civic behind me, and he decided to parallel me...maybe to see who I was ... I drove on....and as his lane came to a crawl, I was once again past him...but no sooner than I had increased my speed, when I spot a pair of headlights bearing down on me. And so I had a "bright" shadow behind me from opposite Ubi Driving Centre....all the way to Joo Chiat Place. One that kept speeding up and filtering a split second after I did (kinda like Peter Pan's shadow). Then.....as we stopped at the traffic junction, he decided to try the middle lane... because the vehicle in front of mine had decided not to go straight but to turn (without signalling...and the lane was not even meant for turning). Suddenly, the vehicle in front completed his lane change manouevre (there was a turning lane on the right), and I sped forward as the lights turned green. My car can hit almost 10s flat for the century sprint, and a stock Civic SIR can do it in about 7s, but I had the early jump. As I cleared 40kmh (within the yellow box), I noticed he had changed back to come up from behind me....and by the time I had hit 80 and wanted to change my gear to 3rd, he was along side me....and as I kept on flooring my accelerator, he pulled away from me (approx from 100-150 ) faster than a WRX would have (I have taken on a few...). As he passed me, I could here a special sound....above the VTEC that was already in full song. I think it was a supercharger (no BOV or Wastegate sounds). Damn....he was as fast as the Ferrari 355 I took on in the CTE..... just blistering speed and acceleration! The only thing that should have warned me about the car's potential.... a "Something" Racing logo across the bonnet. I didn't have a good look, but it was not Venom Speed! Fast car.... The EG6 is a very light car, and has the same engine (well, almost) as the SIR / EK4, which means it's power to weight ratio is even better. Plus, you were taking on, as you said, a modded EG. On brochures, my car has a century sprint time of 9.8s, and I wouldn't even dream of going anywhere near a stock EG5, let along a modded EG6. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Presea 3rd Gear October 29, 2002 Author Share October 29, 2002 ....I'm nuts....when there's no traffic, racing is purely to listen and hear the other engine at full song....to figure what they might have under the hood...mods...size of turbo....wastegate/BOV... And if there's light traffic....then we can see how skillful and experienced the driver is at reading traffic patterns and anticipating changes. I've even met Nissan Lorries Drivers that are damn good at this.....must be the 3.1L diesel engine making the most of it's powerband... This Civic driver....not too experienced....kept selecting the wrong lanes....would speed up....and attempt to overtake.....only to have a car/van cut into that lane. He only got away because there was no traffic in front of us. But I guess afterall, a supercharged Civic is only useful in straights and drags. Yes....a slightly lowered EG6...Canary Yellow....yes... not a bright yellow, but a slightly dulled "bright yellow". What's the "team words" across the bonnet? I only caught the "Racing" bit. Well....at least I got to hear it in FULL SONG!.... Wait a minute...I though superchargers were not allowed in SMSA events? Don't tell me simple internal and external mods can make an EG6 so fast....and the sound so different from the regular Vtec sounds....? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Presea 3rd Gear October 30, 2002 Author Share October 30, 2002 ...Well... I only heard the civic's "sound" over my own engine while it was at 5000-7000rpm.... It sounded good ...and the car was just so much faster. Even a WRX seems slow......I suppose 200+hp on a EG6 Civic would be WRX-beating... I remember seeing a Video of an illegal race between a Dodge Viper and a Civic, where the Civic beat the Viper in that illegal drag race. A Viper does 0-100 in about 4s.... I was once in an accident where I was behind a Civic that crashed into an Impreza TS. I managed to stop in time, so the Civic avoided becoming a bad looking sandwich, but 2 other vehicles hit into me from behind. Anyway...the civic's front end look totalled, with radiator fluid all over the place, and bonnet and headlights a mangled mess. Funny thing, the wheels weren't damaged, and we could actually push it to one side. The new Impreza (and the distraught owner ..think it was a few months old) wasn't that badly damaged...bumper and boot....but nothing structurally damaging....because the Civic kinda went "under" the Impreza. My first traffic accident (almost 10 yrs ago..) was that of my family's Nissan Sunny crashing into the back of a Civic Esi. It was my fault...I admit. The driver jammed brakes along CTE (Toa Payoh) where they had recently (then) erected the now familiar speed camera. I was attempting to filter to PIE, not paying attention....so I braked too late. My damage...slight denting of the bonnet, and bumper...no headlights cracking. Costs: $400. Civic's damage...bumper and boot...and the side of the boot area. Costs: $2500 .... (fortunately my mechanic knew my father quite well....paid $2000 in the end for repairing both vehicles) Civic's are just built soft! I just thought about it .....all my traffic accidents occurred on the CTE...within 1-2km of the Speed camera...going towards town.
