Neutral Newbie

Newbie here. Thinking of getting a car cos the COE is attractive enough.

But torn between these 2 choices.....Altis & Sunny.

Both almost the same except the Altis is slightly higher priced...

How's the interest rate for 10-yrs loan & which banks offer loan...?

Thanks in advance.... [sweatdrop]

Hi newie - and welcome to MCF (boy, it's been a long time since I last said that....)

Have you tried them both ? Curious to know your impressions.... [thumbsup]

As for interest rates, you may also want to look at the terms and conditions of not taking the in-house loan for either one. I've met some cases where the car price stated is on the condition that you take the in-house loan offered otherwise, certain "discounts" may be forfeited.... [:p]

Welcome to MCF!!! But I think you should change your nick since you won't be a newie for much longer!! [:p]

Personally, the Altis is higher priced, but is more worth it. Its got more power and FC is definitely better than the Sunny. What amt you pay more now, you will get it back through petrol expenses.

But ultimately, its gotta be a car that you like, cos you will be driving it everyday! [thumbsup]

Thks, bro.

Generally, I know that the interest rate for 10-yrs loan is abt 2.45%. But some banks offer lower....

Have not test them yet...maybe this sat....but the sunny is more "ah pek" car than the altis...& somemore toyota always got voted for best selling in SG....

Btw, how's the after-sales service of nissan or toyota? Heard lots of craps of them...

These 2 cars were on my radar screen when was hunting for one 3 months ago. Eventually I settled for Sunny EX auto cos the price difference back in early Oct was >8k for the 2 cars. You should know which is more ex. [:)]

Sunny's interior is luxurious and handling is excellent. Altis is more powerful and yet more fuel economical. After doing my math, I will probably spend $300 to $500 more on petrol each year if I go for Sunny...based on a mileage of 25kkm/yr This translates into $1500 to $2500 over a period of 5years(this is the max that I will keep a new car). So budget wise, it makes more sense to get Sunny, not to mention lesser interest upfront due to lower loan too.

Of course the selection process will be different for each individual. I am just sharing some of the considerations I have gone through before deciding which car to go for.

If you are not choosing Sunny because of concerns about its high FC(which is a fact), you might want to justify if the 8~9k you spend on the Altis is worth the value too.

Just my 2 cents.

Though sunny is known as a drinker, altis is not any much better. sunny has better handling and the built quality is better, altis is more spacious. after sales service - i think TC is better. they also giving 2 years free maintanance [thumbsup]

I chose the Sunny 2 months back. My reasons:

1. Altis and Vios made in thailand and i have a friend and a relative respectively who encountered problems with the mechanisms in the first month.

2. Altis is also a heavy drinker. FC is below 10km/l which is similar or worse to the auto Sunny. I drive a manual which is giving me about 12km/l and i am expecting it to go up to 14km/l when i change to fully synthetic and a less viscous oil.

3. Altis has no manual gear option. There is no way i will drive an auto car... just too boring.

4. Sunny looks better in my opinion. (I installed full body kit)

5. Convinced with the stability and control of the sunny after my trip to Penang. Was in full control at 160kph(~4200rpm) (accelerator not floored yet) and was still able to enjoy the music.

i think many banks are enticing pple to take 10yrs loan. typically, they will offer u cashback, maybe abt 2-3k, depending on the amt u take. so it does mean the interest u pay is lower than 2.45%

try finatiq.com. onli 1.99%.wink.gif

finatiq cannot take 100% loan. needs dp at least 15%. another alternative is not to get tie down by any bank. then apply for refinance. heard dbs & uob still offering 1.6% for refinancing.

nissan sales crap? not sure about all SE but at least there are SE in Nissan that entertain me w/o asking even when I went down in T and bermudas. Toyota wan must beg them to serve me and also half hearted.

Toyota: Crowded - no one entertain u. asked for help, half hearted. Don't do a run down on car feature. Keep glancing if got ah pek or family then excuse to serve them. KNS.

Nissan: Crowded - There will be people wanting to serve u. even if they are engage, they say give me 5 mins and they come back. Run down car features, finance. very attentive.

Toyota : Empty - All SE stand in counter to chat. U have to walk to them for service.

Nissan: Empty - Sure got SE rushing to serve u once u hot the entrance.

This happened during 3 occassions.

Disclaimer. I prolly looked young in my sloppy outfit but wife was with me - Toyota SE probably think i don't have purchasing power. They are very helpful towards old farts with family.

After sales service. TC nothing to shout about but nothing to complain about either.

But Nissan 50k km service is free. Syn oil is free. Plus uses Timing belt, parts cheaper.

Try not to get 10 years loan. more risk if you cannot pay up if kenna retrench. Your break even point is about 6 years. (Do search for a thread discussing about 10 yrs loan)

Altis, Vios, Lancer & Sunny was on more short list while I was hunting.

Personally the vios is out because of low headroom and leg room, not used to center console. While it looked sporty in front, Front the back it looked terrible. Lancer was the best looker in this group.

Altis was ok but the wooden panels looks like crap to me. Interior does look more refine & cheerful than the all black dated Sunny EX.

Ultimately, the attitude of the SEs help sway me AWAY from Toyota. They probably been too well fed and knows they don't really need to sell.

Settled for Sunny EX because of its offers back then. Cash back, $500 petrol voucher, free 50k servicing, freebies and it was about 9k cheaper than altis.

FC wasn't really a key consideration since I budgeted $200 for petrol a month and is pumping only $160+ on 98 per month. TCO for sunny seems to be lower according to my calculation.

We usually discourage others from taking a 10yr loan citing reason that if one lose their job, sure die. But taking a 5yr or 7yr loan is equally bad too unless one has guaranteed employment for this period too.

Think the main discouragement for a 10yr loan shld be

i) hefty interest payable

ii) if one can onli afford to buy using 10yr loan and zero d/p, then the person shld seriously ask themselves are they financially capable to afford that car to start wif?

Which is why I bought Sunny in Oct :) ! I had done my maths before chosing Sunny, Altis or Mazda3. The price diff between Altis/Mazda3 can easily cover the Sunny's high FC for > 5 years. Of course one does not choose his car based on cost diff, but cannot deny alot still does.

After driving Sunny for 2 months, yeah, handling is good and interior is comfortable, better than my brother's Altis. Loan wise, you still cut down a lot on interest with the lower price and loan with the bank...

well, true, but for 7 years loan with a decent down, u reach your breakeven faster. chances are those that can foor a decent down & get a 5-7 yrs loan will have more financial stability & savings to tide unemployment period if kenna retrench.
