hi guys, i just signed up this forum.

last night, i made my booking for an altis.

after much thought of deciding between altis and lancer sports, i settled for altis elegance 1.6L package.

well, i was hoping to get some big help in decision making regarding RIMS for altis. m'sia altis 1.6 comes with 15" rims while the 1.8 model comes with 16" rims. sadly, all altis in s'pore comes in 14" rims. in fact, there are many more additional cool functions that m'sia altis has but not for s'pore models. but i'm sure the pricing is the factor why s'pore altis has only 14" rims.

my dilemma now is this... i have planned to upgrade the rim size to 15" because altis is too big and heavy car to be on just 14". i even read that drivers experience some swaying while cornering or changing lanes in high speed. so, i was thinking of changing the rims to get more grip on the road, mainly for safety reasons.

then, a friend of mine got lubang to intro. his uncle in m'sia is getting the 1.8 altis and will be changing the ori 16" rims to sports rims. so, he asking me if i'll be interested in the 16" for rm1k. taking this option, i'll be going from 14 to 16. fuel consumption should be an extra 10% per month if i'm not wrong. not sure if the additional weight could be extra burden for the car. bear in mind that this is just ori 16" rims.

i think i'll listen to some feedback first before saying more. hope bros here could shed some light into this matter. btw, me first time owning a car in s'pore. previous driving experience in m'sia includes, proton iswara, proton waja, mitsubishi lancer, nissan sentra, yamaha Y80!

thanks... [:)]

Hi Lkming,

Congrade on your new car. I also booked an Altis recently. Definitely changing to a bigger rim & tyres will give you more grip, better road handling, better look as well and definitely better FC compare to original rim & tyre. There will be minor impact on ride comfort but that's subjective and you can get a better tyre like Bridgestone GR80 or Michelin MXV8 or XM1 for comfort tyres.

The stock rim & tyre are not the best as this is cost saving purpose. So expect the rims to be quite heavy... around 8kg! [:p] ) for the 14" alloy wheel (not sure about the 16" rim that you are getting..but pretty sure is very heavy if it is a stock rim). So this will play a big part in your wheel weight. Off course the lighter the better...so unless you are going to trade-in or upgrade the rim to a lighter say 5-6kg your fuel consumption would be not so good. Also the tyre are not the best ..so comfort & noise will be greater in these stock tyres as your increase in milage.

When I got me altis last week, immediately went change to 16". Trade in was 400 bucks, so I spent 600 bucks on rims and tyres after trade in. Quite a good deal in my opinion. [thumbsup] If you want, best to change immediately after you get your ride, else you cannot fetch a good price for it.

Personnally, I would not get the 16" from malaysian altis....look at the stock rims, imagine it 16".....it should be quite heavy. If you are already ready to spend, might as well get something you like. [nod]

Agree with Vienta...better FC if your rims & tyres are lighter than stock.

Can anyone confirmed or comments on the Warranty Void (in particular for Toyota Borneo Motor) if increase rim size to +2 (from 14" to 16") as mention earlier in the tread.

Thanks

it makes no sense that warranty will be void coz of 17 inch rims..

i have even been to Borneo Motors service centre to sort out wheel alignment problem with my 17" wheels...

they only commented that mounting or balancing could have been done wrongly.. no warnings or cautions that warranty being voided coz of big wheels...

so if anyone is using 16 inch wheels,, lagi no prob, some countries got 16" as standard...

I think its our importer here trying to make more money out of it. I suggest writing to Toyota japan asking them is it that Toyota Car cannot be upgraded to 1inches up? Look at the Tokyo motor show...everyone is upgarding even to 18......

i would agree that upgrading to lighter 16" rims would be better off than 16" stock rims of those 1.8L m'sia altis. but rm1k is really cheap coming with tyres. may i know estimation of a light 16" rims in the market?

as for warranty, there was no mention of warranty void by my SE when i asked him. but he said better not to change asap upon getting the car. why? because if problem with alignment, no one will take responsibility. bring to BM, they will say the re-alignment upon rim change is not correct. bring to the guy that change for you, they will say defective shaft or whatever. although this scenario is unlikely, suey suey hard to say also. so, the SE said better drive for few months first to confirm everything ok before change. so that if alignment problem, we know is the changing of rims no good.

btw, where to get info of weight of stock rims? i guess it's now down to price vs weight vs warranty vs safety. 4 factors to consider.

oh, got my friend to snap a pic of the rim mentioned...

no point writing to Toyota Japan lah...

if Borneo Motors or any other distributors for that matter, wants to void warranty for illogical and unreasonable reasons, then just ask them to show the black and white for the warranty lor...

ask them to show in printed form specifically that 17 inch wheels will void the suspension warranty... or changing horns will void engine warranty... or spoiler will void windscreen warranty... hee

Hi! Can I please dissuade you from your so called lobang? RM1000? Siao! That's SGD$400 plus. for that I'd rather recommend you to get $100 Taiwan rims. Though not top-of-the-line products, they are lighter than stock rims, plus build quality is not bad (if you carefully select the model). Some rims from Cheng Da and RM rims are modeled after existing Japanese rims, so you have some plus factor in looks too.

really, stay away from that so called lobang. NOt worth it

My friends driving a honda civic and not happy that the engine vibrate when the car goes about 5000pm. KM say is like that one and he wrote to Honda japan. Honda Japan take up the matters and get the problem solve for him. Going for 17 and 18icnhes is common in Japan . Cannto say void warranty lah...sure there is some guide line to it.

Wheel alignment issues is a good point. But what if you have some alignment issue with the BM stock wheel wouldn't the technician said is your fault as maybe you hit some kerb or something...and ask you to paid for the alignment? Not sure if alignment is free of charge at BM? Off-course if other major problem like defective shaft..i'm sure is cover under the warranty...no?

Has anyone experience alignment issue (especially from BM) beside Nine-eleven?

good point brought up by chousei. like i've mentioned, me n00b to owning a car, which means no idea of current market for parts. but does $100 taiwan rims come with tyres as well?

can't help but wonder why m'sia altis has better looking rims...

No lah. $100 Taiwan rims are individual. Pick a comfort tire for ard $80 and each wheel will cost you $180. Plus you can get some trade-in discounts for your present wheel, maybe knock off $200 off final price and you are looking a comfortable $130 per wheel upgrade. DUN BE CONNED. I hate stock rims! Think Malaysian rims selling ard the same price (i.e. JRD). You can go feel the difference between the rims. I say on the net also no pa-keh, you go feel. Otherwise, people say i bias.
