Neutral Newbie

Hi there, few weeks back on a rainy day, travelling along the highway, did an emergency brake, ABS came in, I think the wheels stopped but the car glided on [shocked] . Asked some friends about it, they told me tyres got problem. So I need some advice on which tyre should I go for to have good grip on both wet and dry road, noise not a big issue (unless really very noisy [dizzy]). Presently the tyre I have is 195/55/R15. Thanks.

What brand tyre are you using ?

If you are using Yokohama, then better drive slower on wet & raining day, I experience this before when doing a U-turn to commonwealth market on a raining day.

For a reasonable general purpose tyre, try Michelin Pilot Preceda. Relatively quiet, and pretty good grip too. It's not the best performance tyres, but a class above the normal ones.

You can consider Michellin Pilot Precedas or Bridgestone GR80. I hear they are rather quiet tyres yet having reasonable performance in wet & dry. wink.gif

The whole idea of having ABS is to prevent wheel lock. Wheel lock in an emergency is the main cause of fatal accident. ABS function is to apply pressure to the brake system and then release, these actions is repeated few hundred times over a second. ABS technology comes from the aircraft industry.

My car is pretty new so using the original tyre, Sime tyre. After looking through some of the postings, it seems like Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 and BFG gforce Sport are quite popular around here. But how is the wet road holding for these 2 tyres ? Any other good recommandations are certainly welcome.

You might want to take a look at http://www.tirerack.com/ They provide real user survey and ratings on the tyres that are available in USA.

The two that you have listed, here is the rating:

Kumha ECSTA Supra 712

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...ECSTA+Supra+712

BFG gforce Sport does not have enoght feedback for ratings but you can look at the reviews.

Please keep in mind that these are online users' feedback and ratings so you can expect some degree of bias if the no. of feedbacks and actual mileage used are not big enough.

Alternatively, you can view the tyres by vehicle. You will be able to get good recommendation depending the type of performace/price you want.

Finally, here is a survey result for Ultra High Performance Summer tyres which your two mentioned are in:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresult...ay.jsp?type=UHP

Do take the Total miles reported into account when you read these results.

Gen2, you need to know what is important to you before you can make a decision among the short-listed ones. I would consider dry/wet traction and hydro resistance the most important in Singapore as compare to handling and noise comfort. Your might have different criteria so only you yourself will know which is the most suitable one. The website provides very useful info so you can make an educated decision.

I am using back my stock Pirelli P6000 on my Volvo S60 205/55R16 after trying out Contential ContiSportContact 2. Both perform about the same on dry/wet traction, hydro resistance, handling and tread wear but P6000 is a bit noisier than CSC2 but with the CSC2 cost more, I eventually switch back to P6000. My S60 is pretty heavy for its size and I tends to use Conti tyres to ensure the tyres are able to carry the weight of the vehicle. Safety is the most important thing for me when it comes to choosing tyres.

CHIMP, thanks for your advice. I am also very concern about safety when coming to choseing tyre. Now I am also looking at these 2 Bridgestone tyre Potenza S-03 and RE750, do you or any of the bros here have any knowledge or experience with these two tyre ?

Personally, I have not had any experience with these two tyres. By just looking at the Tirerack.com ratings, they both look pretty good. If money is not an issue, can just go for the S-03. Otherwise, value for money, RE750 is better.

I can ask around my friends but perhaps others here can chip in with their experience on these two tyres.

Yes, i agree the Sime Tyres are hopeless. I have used the 712s before, for about 40,000km. I find it money worth. Grips in dry and wet are good when the tyres are not hitting mid-life. After that, the wet grip drops gradually.

Haven't used BFGoodrich yet but i find the road noise will be on the higher side judging from the thread patterns.

I've also used S-03 before too. It's one of the Ultra High Performance tyres. Everything's great except the only down factor - High Price [thumbsdown]

I got experience using BFG G sport and to me, it's not too bad. Downside is noisy. Price tag, quite affordable.

But don't think it can be compared to the makes of S-03. How about getting the Goodyear GSD-3? Pretty high performance tyres as well.
