GDIzen Neutral Newbie December 30, 2002 Share December 30, 2002 ABS as it is more flexible and after painting, looks 'flatter' and 'smoother'
Saaber Neutral Newbie December 30, 2002 Share December 30, 2002 Fiber Glass is the worst....Cracked Easily.....
Babymushroom Neutral Newbie December 30, 2002 Author Share December 30, 2002 But I read from another forum that ABS is not good as it cannot be patched... Would like comments on this QUOTED FROM SOMEONE: simply put, one would not go into ABS for after market BodyKits... cuz CANNOT patch... if talking about after market bodykits, usually only choices are Fibreglass and FRP.. with the later being a more popular, but ex choice...being lighter and more flexible.. both offers the chance to patch when accidents happens and cracks... ABS and Carbon Fibre can usually only be found in Original Bodykits.... but once crack, which does happens, can say bye bye to the whole kit... Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 30, 2002 Share December 30, 2002 I think ABS and PU kits can be patched but will look uneven or downright unsightly. That's why the entire piece are usually replaced after any damage or accident.
Babymushroom Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Author Share December 31, 2002 Hmm.. very ugly ar ? Fiberglass so much easier to patch ? Wonder why ??
Esquire Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Share December 31, 2002 maybe i present it at another angle to you. fibre is easily patched but it also easily cracks. i've seen multiple hairline cracks when one car's fibre front lip had a light knock against a raised kerb. on the other hand, PU and ABS, being more flexible as a material, can withstand more vibration and shock before breakage occurs. these are some of the reasons why many of the people whom i know who get aftermarket bodykits all go for PU or ABS... yes, there are other advantages of fibre being lighter and having more designs available, but most of my friends went for a more hassle free choice. hope this helps cheers! Trdcorona Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Share December 31, 2002 get the ABS. although more expensive, its very flexible. means it would not crack so easily. the cons of abs is that it cannot custom.
Babymushroom Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Author Share December 31, 2002 Ahh.. that helps alot thx man .. Some people say this material good some say the other material good but I guess it comes down to what they actually want... I dun mind not customising as I can get a ABS bodykit that fits perfectly to Nissan SSLE But I heard Carbon Fiber is even better than PU and ABS but have not seen any bodykit shop that does it .. By the way anyone knows any bodykit shop that does bodykit for Nissan? I ask in nissan forum but I think they dun know .. anyone here know? Babymushroom Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Author Share December 31, 2002 Hmm.. wonder why that person said that ABS cracks easily lolz ABS is heavy and stiff. Cracks easily but has good temperature resistance as it is a thermoplastic - fixed shape after setting. Fibreglass is the cheapest and the heaviest of the lot. Not very stiff though. PU - I don't know cos there are many grades of PU to begin with but most grades are heat resistant. Anyway, never heard of PU used in car bodykit leh! Mostly aluminium(duralumin), fibreglass, ABS and carbon fibre. No offence to that guy that made this comment Everyone has their own views
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 31, 2002 Share December 31, 2002 Fibreglass is easier to mold so can patch easily but of course cracks easily too as it's brittle. I had a fibreglass spoiler before, solid stuff and sat high on my brick's boot so not much fear of cracking. Carbon fibre is basically very rigid fibres interwound together so it's very durable and light, but hard to paint as the surface is not really porous enough for paint to adhere. Thus carbon fibre kits are usually left in it's greyish/black pure form.
