Radiator - Relay

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I am driving a Octavia Classis 2002. Had a funny situation this evening, the radiator fan was not turning, hence there was no air-conditioning. Found it out the other way round.

Understanding the issue a little from my alfas'days, a main fan is not turning is due to 4 things, fuse, relay, contact point(connector to the fan) and fan failure (unlikely as I have managed to get it turning thereafter after mucking around).

Now, kindly advice where is the fan relay situated, I will be most oblige.

Ivan

Ivan,

Do have the fan checked out, VAG cars tend to have problems with the realy switch / fans giving way....in fact across the range ...VWs Audis, Seats & Skodas. Sems that our heat doesnt help either...cos these cars are designed to have the aircon running 365 days a year !!!

hi,

Appreciate your help. There was no code in my classic, very basic system or I might have missed it. The last time it happened was 18 months ago.

Is the relay (saw the wiring ends there), the box attached by 2 nuts UNDER the battery holder.

Just when I have told my wife that this car is reliable, maybe I should not.

Hi,

Thanks, will do, prefer to do it myself.

Any idea where is the relay, have done on my 4 Alfas myself, and try not to be taken for a ride by mechanics.

Fan (one nearer to battery) in ambiente also stop recently. Did a check at Servo, when engine on, the fan not turning. Philips knock the fan core few time and fan start turning slowly. Philips said it's time to change liow.

Will do it together with my next servicing (very soon). Expecting damage $200+. bigcry.gif

Hi,

Sorry to say this, all the mechanics are the same, trying to earn a living. Maybe I should help you at half the price [;)][;)][;)] .Just Kidding

Used to drive Alfa Romeos and they are reknown to have this problems. And all mechanics say that the fan failed. The simple remedy for Fan failure is to take the fan out (less than 30 mins), soak the armature in Keroscene(S$4) to remove the carbon from the armature due to the carbon brushes(S$0.5 for each at Sin Ming Blk 79). You be the judge for the S$200 service for Intellecture Property. However, a newer car, generally the relay fails, commonly used are the B00049 (a socket type with a fuse on top), which fails 24 to 36 months.

Hence, my question is to locate the relays, maybe you can observe them and share later where is the relay. [;)]

Sigh.......[smallcry]

Hi, oh....some of them use diesel instead, cheaper. Like I said, IP and all of them are the same. Do remember to check where is the relay for me, thanks.

Ivan,

Go try out Eurohaus fopr an alternative to Servo. They arent too bad, decent service and the boss himnself attends to you where possible. No promises but personally I find him decent., no real complaints. Please do not get me wrong, as I'm not here to promote anyone, am just offering alternatives.

And I do agree with yopur statement that mechnaics are just mechanics .......so whats new rite ?? Servo has its fair share of problems with regards to mechs ...after all they are a business concern too.....and which business doesnt want to make money rite ??

Anyways, give Eurohaus a try...and like I said am not here to promote the......just an opinion from a fellow Skoda car owner.....

My 2 cents worth..

Hi,

Am touched. Thanks.

Had a quick look a while ago and guess the relays are under the battery. Will do something this weekend to explore on it and keep you posted.

Maybe we should start a Skoda column to share how we can DYI on our vehicle to help lower maintenance cost.

Just did a check, it's actually more or less the same for the rest of the engine codes.

Just hope that it's of some use to you, if you need to check anything else lemme know ya? [;)] I'll see if I can come up with anything [laugh]

More likely will be the fuse F3. The poorly design fuse box will wear once a year as I had change twice liow... Before it happens, you can actually take a look at the fuse box for any whilte powder on the fuse or is there any burn /melted on the F3 lead...

Hi,

The F3 Fuse, is it on top or below the battery compartment. Have checked the top, looks ok.

Yes sir... It's at the top... There's a catch at both ends of the compartment... Squeeze it and lift up the cover which you will see it's identical to the pictures shown at this thread that Lightspeed previously post...

Hello,

Can you post a pic of the fuse box & its location? I'd be keen to check it out on our Superb.
