When you crank start your car, the battery is capable of supplying more than 400amp to the starter but the initial surge can be as high as 900amp but only for less than a second. If not properly channel this high surge can fry your sensitive electronic components especially the on-board computer.

For those who have install very high wattage amplifiers and speaks, normally they cushion the sudden demand for high wattage by connecting high charge capacitor ( similar to those use in single phase electric motor)parallel to the battery. The capacitor acts as a accumulator of electrical charge and will release on demand. To make sure the capacitor will be pumped up to meet the sudden demand, the stock alternator will have to be upgrade to meet the ICE system output demand.

Once you start to adding accessories, it is best to audit the total amperage require and then upgrade the alternator and battery accordingly.

You can use a clamp-on digital ampere meter ( see attach )to take the reading of each additional accessories by switching one at a time and take note of the amp demand.

Your alternator charges your batt and supply charge to the vehicle, which i believe to be in parallel connection. Not sure about the price, but you better check if the charging is good first. THe alternator is not cheap i reckon, though sometimes small maintenance of the carbon brushes do help... Batt i recommand amaron, last quite long as compared to normal batts, but very ex. [sweatdrop] Last heard about 60 bux for 45amp batt. [sweatdrop]

You need to have interests and the next thing is to read up, result = armchair mechanics.

Alternator = electric power generator
