    Subaru EyeSight on 2019 Forester

I finally renewed car insurance with AAS - Liberty Insurance few days ago. No question asked on windscreen tinting. I just signed on the paper and make payment, then followed by road tax renewal.

My take is as follows: 1. MI disclaimer - I share the same view. 2. I choose front solar film windscreen; and security film for side windows and rear windscreen - that meet LTA regulations. 3. My Forester i-L is coming to 1 year in end-December 2019. Will know if there is any increase in insurance premium loadings or change in T & C.

Honda Sensing vs. Subaru EyeSight System

From what I gather, Subaru EyeSight is into 3rd generation now. I owned a 2019 Forester i-L (SK series) and as expected, Motor Image does not provide solar film for front windscreen, with all the "these-and-that" reasons. After making some enquires and study, I went ahead to install high spec. solar film for front windscreen. The EyeSight works as expected - land departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking... no issue at all. Of course, I have to bear the risks, which for me (as an engineer) is acceptable. I have no regret with my decision to fit solar film to the front windscreen, but I guess it is personal choice for everyone.

The notice is issued by SOA - Subaru of America. From USA website, Mike Campbell is Vice President for Service and Quality. As most people are aware, America is one unique country in the world that has many lawyers looking out for Class Action suit in order to make a "killing" for legal fee and monetary compensation. That's why Subaru of America has to come out clearly and loudly by issuing notice of disclaimer against unauthorized modifications or fitments by Subaru car owners over there. So far, there were few occasions where my 2019 Forester EyeSight was activated as programmed, taking into consideration of the solar film on the front windscreen. Of course, I also wipe clean the front windscreen regularly with water against dust/dirt accumulation. Just 2 weeks ago, I changed the stock wipers to PIAA silicone wiper blades (in JB) and gone are the occasional streaking noises and some thin oily film; is effective against heavy rain. But these latest generation PIAA silicone wipers are super expensive around <RM280 a set. Anyway, I think it's good investment for driving safety so that the EyeSight lens can scan the road ahead without any visual impairment. To date, my Forester i-L has crossed 15k mileage with high reliability. Changed to Motul 300V high performance engine oil during 10k service, and will continue with 300V for future car servicing.

    2015 Forester 2.0

The tyre size is for FNA - 225/60 x 17. Sorry, I did not ask for other sizes or brands (Korean & Japan). Michelin Primacy 4 (Made in Thailand?) is around RM560/pc to RM590/pc. Continental UC6 (Made in Malaysia) is around RM490/pc. Goodyear Wrangler Triplemax (Made in Malaysia or Thailand?) is around RM450/pc. All tyre dealers give better discount if 4 tyres are replaced.

Below are the tyre outlets (although you can find many other tyre shops dotting JB town carrying the same brands): Michelin: City Tyre, at the end of Jln Serampang. Continental: Syarikat Lim Chin Hin, in Taman Pelangi. New tyre version is UC6. Goodyear: Hawk Tyre Service (large tyre chain within JB), Jalan Badik 1, in Taman Sri Tebrau.

As an alternative, maybe you can consider changing car tyres in Johor Bahru? There are several well known brands available for 225/60 x 17: - Michelin Primacy 4 - Continental UC6 - Goodyear Wrangler TripleMax

Hi Richard, Thank you for the advice. Yes, I will get in contact with car insurance company soon and clarify on the risk of voiding any claims.

The solar film specs on my front windscreen have 78% visible light transmission, 10% visible light reflectance. Just to side-track here: my Forester side windows and rear windscreen are fitted with tinted automotive security film by another brand, as I had one past bad experience of car theft where my car rear quarter window was smashed and notebook stolen across the Causeway many years ago.

Drove on AYE expressway yesterday night (Tuas-Jurong area). Even after switching-ON the 2 front reading lights (for driver and front passenger) and the centre courtesy light for rear passengers, the EyeSight system functions as usual. The strategic positioning of the 2 cameras ensures that any stray light is shielded away.

During one rainy day last week, I turned-off/switched-off the wipers manually upon entering my office car park and let the front windscreen be "blocked' by rain droplets, just to see how the EyeSight system reacts. At that instance, the EyeSight warning came on, as well as the 2 smaller yellow lights - lane departing and pre-collision. Basically, it warns the driver that the EyeSght system is disabled. Please see the photo as attached below. Never encountered such warning during my typical day and night driving, as well as raining days with the wipers in use. In summary, the solar film did not affect the EyeSight function so long as the front windscreen visibility is clear/good. Like another bro mentioned, as long as our eyes can see, the EyeSight system will also "see" and functions normally.

The EyeSight system can be switched OFF manually - Lane Departing and/or Pre-Collision, if the driver choose to. The 2 switches are located overhead, above the rear view mirror. This explains why MI requires buyers to sign the disclaimer form upfront when placing order for new Subaru cars with Eyesight.

This Volvo video was uploaded in May 2015. I believe much technological improvements have been made through the years for all car manufacturers. Anyway, different manufacturers adopt different technology.

Subaru EyeSight system is not radar based - different from most/other car manufacturers. It rely on 2 nos. (stereo) colour optical cameras, which lead to the big question mark on front windscreen solar film in other Subaru forums. I have driven on AYE expressway, morning time and against the sun glare. The Adaptive Cruise Control responds well, and the Lane Departing warning light and beep come ON as expected. Didn't take photo during such moments, as my wife was not around to help me, while both my hands were firmly on the steering wheel. I am very impressed with Subaru EyeSight system as it works well on real-world driving condition. Nevertheless, the driver assisted system must not be used during heavy road traffic condition or rush hour period. All-in-all, the SK Forester is an awesome SUV to drive, without having to suffer sun burn from the front windscreen.
