Quote:- "Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE f you're in the market for a family car, the funky-looking new Primera can't have escaped your attention. The all-new five-door is, together with its saloon sibling, it's one of the most distinctive models in its class. At the back, the styling is noticeably different, with sharp edges leading to finned tail-lamp lenses that resemble those of classics from the Fifties. The looks are a question of taste, but to our eyes the hatch doesn't have the elegance of the saloon or es-tate. The load-carrying ability is also a little disappointing. Its 460-litre capacity is 40 behind that of the Mondeo and only 10 litres bigger than in the Primera saloon, although those narrow light clusters and bumpers allow a wider opening. However, the load space is intelligently thought out, with luggage nets and hooks ensuring your shopping stays put. In terms of build, the Nissan cannot be faulted. Panel gaps are precise, while the weighty doors and tailgate close with a satisfying clunk. Inside, the quality continues, with smart plastics and neatly trimmed panels. The Primera's space-age controls are put to their best use, which comes with Nissan's brilliant Birdview sat-nav and a larger seven-inch screen as standard. Other kit includes 17-inch alloys, electric rear windows, rain-sensing wipers, and, of course, the Primera's famous reversing camera (Vtim, watch out!). The engine is harsh at high revs, but the extra ratio in the 6-speed gearbox makes it a far more refined cruiser, while the change is slicker than the 5-speed, which feels old-fashioned and notchy in comparison. The hatch displays the same characteristics as the saloon, with lively performance from the 138bhp engine and a firm, but not uncomfortable, ride. The steering isn't as quick as a Mondeo's (Andy, happy??), but is well weighted and no less precise than the Laguna or Vauxhall Vectra's. Indeed, the biggest difference be-tween the hatch and saloon on the road is visibility, as thick D-pillars here restrict rear vision and present an awkward blind spot when changing lanes. It might lack the polish of some rivals but, as the most interesting mainstream Nissan for ages, the newcomer has a lot going for it. Oddball looks and a futuristic dash will give it appeal among those wishing to be different, and as a five-door it offers more practicality. For Primera drivers, it seems fins have just got better! ---- buay-pie-lah ----
