I feel a disturbance in the Force

When I first saw this picture a few years back (in a book titled ‘Celica and Supra. The book of Toyota’s sports coupes, written by Brian Long), it featured two of my favourite things ever created; Star Wars and the Toyota Celica. Immediately I said to myself, “This is something what Darth Vader would drive.”

The picture that you see here is actually an official sanctioned custom-made Star Wars car made for a sweepstakes competition in 1977, shortly after the movie was released in the same year. The grand prize was a Celica GT Liftback. This particular Celica model was fitted with the 2 litre 18R-GU engine and produces around 130bhp. The 1977 US market version of this model came with either a 5-speed manual or 3-speed auto transmission and its chassis code was RA28.

Back to the story, this car was designed by Delphi Auto Design and the competition was a joint venture between Toyota USA and Twentieth Century Fox. This car hasn’t been seen since at that time, during the competition. The vehicle dealer, the identity of the winner and also the VIN number of the car remains a huge mystery till today.

There have been rumours going around saying that there’s a huge group of people who are looking for this particular car. From classic car enthusiasts to Mr. George Lucas himself. The whereabouts of it remains a big mystery, not only to these people but also to many others. Hopefully someone will come forward and provide some leads to where or what happened to this car.

No matter what is the outcome, I believe Lord Vader has his TIE Advanced x1 starfighter (and numerous other vehicles) at his disposal.
