A car driven over a million miles is not something we hear that often. Even one driven over half a million miles is pretty rare and when I heard about this story of a vehicle mechanic who have drove his Honda Accord over a million miles, I just had to share this with everyone as it is something rather amazing.
The owner of this fourth generation Accord is Joe LoCicero, nicknamed “Million Mile Joe”, who is from Maine, USA. He bought it in 1996 with 74,000 miles on it and has driven around 62,500 miles yearly.
When the car passed the 900,000 miles on the odometer, Joe decided to visit his local Honda dealer to let them know of his mission which is to hit the one million mile mark.
According to Joe, the secret to maintaining his Accord is to follow the owner’s manual and regular maintenance schedule. He checks the car’s fluids weekly and runs 10W-30 oil in the summer and 5W-30 in the winter, changing them every 5,000 miles.
Other than that, he had made some repairs and replacements such as the fuel pump, both cooling fans and the radiator twice. He has documented every single thing, by taking pictures and compiling service details, about his car since it passed the 300,000 miles mark.
When the car hit the one million mark recently, he went back to the dealer to inform them of his achievements. Shortly after, he was given a surprise parade in his hometown of Saco, Maine, all organised by Honda.
The parade was like a carnival. It was filled with marching bands, people dressed in costumes, several floats (there was one that resembled a vehicle’s odometer) and also a display of Joe’s trusty old Accord.
Aside from the joyous parade, Joe was also presented a gift from Honda, a brand new Honda Accord.
