Viceroymenthol 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 Fact is if singapore becomes a closed society like Japan's, with a declining birthrate, we will die a much faster death than Japan's economy because we do not even have any truly global native companies to speak of. Besides Keppel and SIA, we are pretty much confined to the region. The reason Singapore has grown thus far is solely because of our openness to foreigners, FDI, immigration and the willingness to absorb foreign influences. Once we become closed off, we shrivel and die. ↡ Advertisement
Ladykillerz 4th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 over and over again, i'm repeating this. let's look into the root cause of the problem instead of blaming who is at fault. the sudden massive influx of population is a big problem here. - it is like putting two wild lions into the same cage filled with 20 deers, what will high likely happen? - it is like putting two TAMED lions into the same cage filled with 20 deers, what will high likely happen? - it is like putting two zebras into the same cage filled with 20 deers, what will high likely happen? the authority need to consider things like the criteria of being citizen and PR, the culture to be taught, etc. foreigners have a set of their own cultures and unfortunately, it doesn't seem to please the people? why not the authority consider a temporary stop from the influx of population and do something about it? somehow, there must be a balance between GDP growth vs For The People. it is obvious that we can see the unbalance now. nonetheless, if we based on facts, it seemed like there are some particular countries that are giving the country heaps of problems and some not. perhaps the authority can consider to put a temporary stop from those particular countries? can we source out from other countries if we really need PEOPLE? then again, will the authority listen to us? give me a break. Viceroymenthol 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 And I hate to say it, but when that time comes we will really need to export our womenfolk to work as maids and prostitutes.
Without_a_car Clutched May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 After Bo Xilai's fall, so much moneyed wealth from Chongqing looking for a safe haven. We must not let one Ferrari incident hampered the flow of RMB to Singapore. It's a tragic but necessary sacrifice for the greater good of Singapore, worthy of a minister paying respect... Viceroymenthol 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 you think they make good maids and prostitutes? Let me put it this way. Back in the 60s and 70s, the Philippines were one of the top economies in Asia. Something happened to their govt and economy and their country was never the same again. Be glad that people still want to migrate here, invest here and property prices are still going up. These are the true barometers of how well an economy is doing and how attractive it is. Don't throw it all away because of a few sentimental and emotional fools.

The reason Singapore has grown thus far is solely because of our openness to foreigners, FDI, immigration and the willingness to absorb foreign influences. Once we become closed off, we shrivel and die. 1. Our openness to foreigners To be open is one matter, the extent and rate of openess is another matter. This has been discussed many times. 2. FDI I doubt most have issues with FDI. FDI has no impact on human interactions. 3. Immigration To be open is one matter, the extent and rate of immigration is another matter. This has been discussed many times. 4. Willingness to absorb foreign influences. Have no idea what is the above about. Too general.
Ladykillerz 4th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 And I hate to say it, but when that time comes we will really need to export our womenfolk to work as maids and prostitutes. your thinking is quite unique but it doesn't solve or dilute the domestic problems that the country people is facing. not everyone can afford a house, not everyone can afford a car, not everyone can look down and see others suffer. of course, we got to agree that we cannot "save" everyone from suffering and we need to move on. i believe the influx of population is also not a big problem for the country people. however, there are facts pointing that we are facing problems with previously foreigners, now citizens or PRs. the authority need to do something about it, be it cultural or whatever you can name it. continue to influx of population will not solve everything and stop the influx of population will also not solve everything. what we need to do is to come out with some good solutions instead of plastic cable ties' ideas. end of the day, we hope that the authority can help to solve the problems and not just quietly see the problems and still continue to increase the problems. quoted: "to export our womenfolk to work as maids and prostitutes." - i can understand your point because we are taught to be KIASEE. what the People need is the authority to show some leadership qualities by settling domestic problems and yet able to bring in the foreigners. if the People just need someone to be one sided? anyone can do the job. not to forget, we are facing fact domestic problems and our leaders are highly paid. say, if we are in an organisation, the top leaders had already being called off by the board of directors. there is noone like "the board of directors" to wake up the leaders. basically i see this as a company without profits and the People without pay increment and bonuses and yet a pay cut. Viceroymenthol 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 Be glad that you can surf MCF in comfort on your hi speed broadband and mobile phone. Be glad that you have relatively affordable and relatively efficient public transport. Be glad that when you get home after a hard day's work, your building is clean, the lights are always on, the lifts work, your front door is not broken by some robber, there is reliable electrical supply, your air con switches on fine, your TV switches on fine, your toilet flushes well, a piping hot meal comes out of the kitchen by your mother or your wife or maid. Lots of us younger generation have never known what poverty is. We have never lived in third world countries like their common folk before. Whatever it is, one wrong step taken in the governing of our country will see us become a banana republic.

Get some basic facts on Japan right before bashing them using mis-characterizations for local consumption.

Viceroymenthol 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 House affordability. Car affordability. Do you see how trivial your concerns are as compared to real serious economic problems. Don't even talk about young couples affording a high floor flat with good view and prime location, near parents and near good schools. Dont even talk about car. When that time comes, it will be a question of living on the street or living under a roof - any roof. As for transport, a basic bicycle will be considered luxurious. Hey don't think that all this is far-fetched. We can crash and burn in a matter of years if something goes wrong. your thinking is quite unique but it doesn't solve or dilute the domestic problems that the country people is facing. not everyone can afford a house, not everyone can afford a car, not everyone can look down and see others suffer. of course, we got to agree that we cannot "save" everyone from suffering and we need to move on. i believe the influx of population is also not a big problem for the country people. however, there are facts pointing that we are facing problems with previously foreigners, now citizens or PRs. the authority need to do something about it, be it cultural or whatever you can name it. continue to influx of population will not solve everything and stop the influx of population will also not solve everything. what we need to do is to come out with some good solutions instead of plastic cable ties' ideas. end of the day, we hope that the authority can help to solve the problems and not just quietly see the problems and still continue to increase the problems. quoted: "to export our womenfolk to work as maids and prostitutes." - i can understand your point because we are taught to be KIASEE. what the People need is the authority to show some leadership qualities by settling domestic problems and yet able to bring in the foreigners. if the People just need someone to be one sided? anyone can do the job. not to forget, we are facing fact domestic problems and our leaders are highly paid. say, if we are in an organisation, the top leaders had already being called off by the board of directors. there is noone like "the board of directors" to wake up the leaders. basically i see this as a company without profits and the People without pay increment and bonuses and yet a pay cut. Manila by itself as a city is quite RICH in those earlier years. However, as a country, Philipines significantly poorer and worse off than Singapore. The British gave Singapore a good fundamental head start ahead of its neighbours. The second reason about pinoys failing later on is due to corruption and general mismangement by the government. It was not because pinoy land was closed to foreigners which is the topic of this thread.
