2010 Environmental Hall of Shame/Fame

Italy's Lamborghini Murcielago has been named and shamed as the most polluting car of the nation by the UK's Environmental Transport Association (ETA), being five times worse than the greenest automobile of 2010, the Toyota iQ which produces just 99g of CO2 per km.   "With emissions five times worse than the greenest car, the Lamborghini is the bull in an environmental china shop," said Andrew Davis, director of the ETA. "Thankfully, there are very few on the roads and there is an increasing c

Wiper water reported to be the cause of a deadly disease.

The United Kingdom Health Protection Agency has come out with a report stating that vehicle windscreen wiper water may be the cause of many of the cases of Legionaires' Disease in England and Wales. This startling discovery was made after some research was made from medical case records. The research was conducted after a questionnaire taken from people infected revealed that most of those that caught the disease spent a lot of time in cars and vans in industrial areas with the window open. Audi wins Le Mans 2010 with a clean 1-2-3 sweep

[extract] For those Audi fans out there I am pleased to report that Audi has achieved their third 1-2-3 all out win at Le Mans within this last ten year period. The 2010 Le Mans 24hours endurance race held over the last weekend was one that basically pitted Audi against Peugeot for the LMP1 category and was actually led by Peugeot. But Le Mans being an endurance race, one by one the competitors including the last surviving Peugeot 908 HDi (

5th Gear Returns!

Despite some doubts as to its continued existence several months back, Fifth Gear has returned to British television screens in a new, shorter and compact format. Having caught a couple of episodes of the new version, I am in two minds about it.   Now, Fifth Gear has always been in the shadow of the insanely popular Top Gear (incidentally returning on June 27th). And for the past few seasons, it seemed as though Fifth Gear was playing catch up. They were trying new stunts and roping in celebr

Formula 1 at Montreal, Canada: Another 1-2 for McLaren Mercedes

Formula 1 in Canada was interesting and McLaren gets another 1-2 win with Lewis Hamilton taking 1st after starting on pole position (his second win of the season) and Jenson Button taking 2nd place. Fernando Alonso driving the Ferrari rounded up the top three by coming in 3rd place. This also makes McLaren taking the lead in the manufacturers championship too. The race was thrilling as even at the start, we get to see Formula 1 race cars bumping into each other as we got to see Liuzzi of Toro R

The Perodua Myvi is a good affordable car to own.

Nowadays car ownership in Singapore has gotten a little more expensive due to the Certificate Of Entitlement (COE) fee moving slightly upwards. Those that wanted a S$60,000 car may find that it costs S$70,000. Add this fact with rising ERP charges, the parking charges and an economy that is still reeling from a global meltdown the total cost of owning a car has risen. Some would walk, take public transport but to those who still yearn to own their personal set of transport would still browse thr

Top 10 most efficient cars since 1984

Fuel efficiency has increased dramatically in the last decade, or at least that's what we've been told. So, it might come as a surprise to find out that six of the Top Ten Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)-rated Fuel Sippers from 1984 to present were built prior to 2000. This info comes straight from the EPA website, the authoritative source on this fuel efficiency stuff.   While some current vehicles such as the 2010 Toyota Prius, 2010 Honda Insight and the 2006-2010 Honda Civic Hybrid

Subaru launches the Legacy 2.5GT tS (Tuned by STI)

When it comes to Subaru here in Singapore the last 'TS' model was an Impreza 1.6TS. Which supposedly meant 'Touring Sports' or among Subaru enthusiasts as well as non-enthusiasts 'Turtle Sports' or 'Turbo Stolen' as it was basically pretty slow in its stock form. However Subaru has come up with a new meaning for the'TS' moniker. With a small 't' followed by a capital 'S', it now stands for 'Tuned by STI' instead.   Subaru has launched the 2.5 liter Legacy B4 sedan and B4 Touring or wagon, both

The youngest human being to ever join an F1 team is 11 year old Canadian Lance Stroll. Believe it or not, he has been inducted into Ferrari's Driver Academy program and will be going under training and supervision to possibly become an F1 driver for Ferrari in future.   The talented young individual won twice at the Canadian national championships in the Rotax Mini Max category as well as the Coupe de Montreal and Coupe du Quebec Micro Max Championship in 2008 and both Mini Max Championships

Aston Martin DB9 to be restyled and re-engineered..

Image courtesy of Autocar The most beautiful piece of car design ever to hit the roads time and again has always been by Aston Martin (in my opinion). Of course, no one can ignore the pantomime of a Lamborghini and the passion of a Ferrari and the ridiculousness of a Zonda, but at the end of the day, when you want to relax and just have a drive, only one car comes to mind, and that is an Aston Martin. The good news is, their current line-up of the DB9 and the Vantage are set to be restyled and

According to Bloomberg, Nissan is the place to be a director for a Japanese automaker. According to a new article, Nissan Motor Company hands its directors close to four times the amount of pay as its rival Toyota and three times as much as what Honda directors bring home. Averaged among all of Nissan's directors, the heads of the company make around US$1.5 million per year, compared to around US$411,150 for Toyota's gurus and US$529,561 for Honda's head honchos. Suzuki previews the third generation Swift

Some breaking news for Suzuki fans out there. Suzuki has previewed the next generation Swift (the third generation) and it is slightly longer (wheelbase up by 50mm to 2530mm -amended ), wider and taller than the model that currently plies our roads. It will also be cleaner and more efficient than the earlier model and will be lighter yet stiffer due to Suzuki utilizing more high tensile steel in its chassis. This surely would make the new Swift handle better than ever and this is a very good thi

The chinese like it long

It seems like long wheelbase variants are turning into a popular trend in China. Well, at least for the segment in which the 3-Series competes there, BMW feels the need to offer a long-wheelbase variant to go up against the successful Audi A4L - the extended wheelbase version of the A4 model.   BMW will be building the stretched variant of the 3-Series at a new plant in the Shengyang economic zone with its Chinese partner Brilliance Auto. The plant, scheduled to be built in 2012, will also be

Sales Pitch 2: Buy a classic car and get the company that built it for free

It seems the story about buying a big boat and get a free car isn't the only two-in-one deal pitched recently. We have another one where you now go to an auction, buy a 1935 Bentley and get the company that made the coach built body for free.   In those days, people usually buy a chassis and then end up fixing a body from one of many coachbuilders. This was especially the case with people buying Rolls Royces, Bentleys and the now extinct British car brand Alvis. Coachbuilders like HJ Mulliner

Hyundai gets a spot at Harrods

The latest addition to the windows of Harrods is a car. Windows which were usually filled with high quality and stylish bags or other luxury items have now been taken over by the sensible Hyundai. Which one exactly? Its the new ix35 Crossover(Tucson).   That is the last thing I'd ever expect from Harrods. What ever happened to Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Gucci? Why not a Lamborghini Balboni or a Ferrari 458? The only consolation I can find is that its the premium version of the ix35 which is bei

Ferrari goes topless

Ferrari's are usually known for their hardcore, mind blowing supercars which make conventional journey's a theatrical treat with its beautiful contours on the exterior and the spine tingling scream of the engine. However, the more understated cars or Gran Tourers I should say, in the Ferrari stable, are set to receive a little more attention...   Marques like the 599 and the Scaglietti or the old Superamerica or even the gorgeous Daytona have been dearly missed and Ferrari's main man, Luca di
