Bridgestone announced it has developed a non-pneumatic concept tyre that could turn out to be a safer and more environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional tyres in the future.

The innovative tyre is 100 percent recyclable and uses a thermoplastic resin spoke structure along the inner sides of the tyres that supports the weight of the vehicle. However, perhaps the most important advantage is that the non-pneumatic tyre increases the safety level as the risk of punctures potentially causing a fatal collision is eliminated. Although such concepts were presented in the form of the Michelin Tweel and Resilient Technologies' honeycomb design, Bridgestone states in a press release that previously such concept tyres have been impractical to produce for the mass market. Bridgestone developed this technology with the aim of practical implementation. Such a tyre also eliminates the need to carry a spare tyre, thus freeing up the boot space. This has a weight-saving advantage as well and contributes to better fuel efficiency.

Looking at the design of the tyre, I am not sure how it can be fitted to the car with bolts and nuts. In addition, if the inner surface of the tyre is exposed like the pictures above, some stones from the road might get trapped to the spoke structure. Another question to be answered is the structural integrity of the spokes over time and its working lifespan. And finally, I believe most motorist would be concerned about its selling price, should the concept goes into production eventually.

  • Godzilla Minus One: Surprisingly emotional and poignant

When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction a

The enduring charm of Singapore wet markets

I know I’m idealising it all - as a not-so-young millennial that can’t remember the last time he cooked a full meal for himself. (That was probably a good two years ago.) But moving on slightly from morning walks now, the space I’ve found myself frequenting when I feel like I need a break from the routines of everyday life (or to simply clear my head) isn’t the park. It’s the basement level of Punggol Plaza. That a wet market even exists here should be surprising. Punggol, after all, is qui

Are forums outdated? I try to find out by asking AI

Is your boss asking you to explore and learn how to use AI to improve the quality and efficiency of your work? Yup, you aren't the only one in that boat.  Whilst exploring new AI tools, I figured: Why not use it to answer some burning questions that I have? This time, it was about whether forums are outdated. Yes, forums like this one that we are on. I remember how before social media became popular, and before apps like Carousell existed, forums were where I chatted with others t

Why oolong tea could be the superior drink of choice at lunch

Coffee - without sugar! - has long been (and still is) my go-to option to accompany my lunch. Amidst a larger 2025 goal of reducing the number of cups of kopi-o kosong I gulp down a week, however, I’ve recently thought about how my lunch experience can be switched up slightly with yet another sugarless drink: A can, or indeed bottle of oolong tea. Oolong tea is said to offer a perfect balance of flavour and functionality - perfect not just for complementing one's meal but also reinvigo
