blogentry-133713-0-17588000-1428370742_thumb.jpgAccording to Malay Mail Online, Malaysia’s Proton is on par with other premium vehicle brands like BMW, Putrajaya insisted to Parliament when asked if the national car maker has what it takes to compete with its international rivals.

In a written reply to Batu Gajah MP V Sivakumar’s question last Thursday (2nd of April), the International Trade and Industry Ministry said many of Proton’s newer models display 'advanced technology, high quality and performance'.

“Some Proton models even offer features of added value in terms of comfort and safety of passengers,” the ministry said in its reply.

As examples, the ministry said models like the Proton Exora, Preve, Suprima S and Iriz come complete with safety technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control System and the Electronic Stability Control.

The models also boast other features such as “whiplash protection headrests”, six airbags, safety belts and ISOFIX fittings for the installation of child safety seats, among other features that are typically offered in premium imported cars, the ministry said.

It said these characteristics, when combined with features of the 'Lotus Ride and Handling', has helped improve the standard of Proton vehicles.

It noted that the national carmaker gained international acclaim when it earned five stars from the Asean NCAP.

“This rating puts the Proton car models on par with other popular car makes like BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Honda,” the ministry said.

For readers out there, do note that a car with a five-star rating from a few years ago might not not qualify for it today, because NCAP organisations raise the bar every periodically.

For example, Euro NCAP has required cars to be equipped with some form of autonomous emergency braking like Volvo’s City Safety to achieve five stars since 2014. Proton does not have any of this technology in its cars yet.

Quoted from another source: "Proton cars are as safe as those from Volvo, the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) has said."

The additional safety equipment doesn't even mean your car is safer. Give the proton a small overlap(25%) test and see the amount of interior intrusion. Then we'll conclude whether it's as safe as a Volvo.

It is not the first time of such claims. The last time a claim "Asia's Answer to BMW" in 2000, when Waja was their very first own design launched, it proves to be the worst Proton quality ever. Though Proton quality has improved in recent years. By making a comparison margin this high instead of rivals of the same bread and butter manufacturers, I can see that these bunch of people are not going to improve and going anywhere fast enough in future. It's the mindset problem.

I never knew Monster Trucks were so popular here

Although it appeared to be selling out fast back when my friend shared the link to the Monster Jam Singapore event some months ago, I could never expect just how popular the event turned out to be until the day itself. You see, originating in the USA, Monster Trucks aren't really an international phenomenon, unlike F1 or other forms of motorsports. Even someone like me, who's very interested in cars, doesn't really know much about these massive machines. And yet, on the day of the even

We are creatures of the air-con

I've often wondered: How much work would get done today if offices were not air-conditioned? What if the only air-con we could enjoy was only in shopping malls and supermarkets? Images of stuffy offices fill my mind. Despite the availability of fans to circulate air, the oppressive heat and humidity will lower our productivity. Many of my colleagues and I experienced this in our previous office, where the ancient air-conditioning system would have a monthly breakdown. For two days, the
