From stock 14" to 16"

i am planning to change my stock mazda 323 rims in near future...

 

my stock one is 14"

wanna change to 16"

 

any experts can share what factors will be affected after changing the rims?

Immediate discovery that your car will feel heavier due to your car's higher flywheel resistance. Pick-up gets slower.

 

16" more stability, & depending on your tyre, the response & sensivity whilst steering. And if you don't get the correct profile, your tyre will rub against the fender when you do a full lock turn.

 

Recurring cost goes up. And of course, your car will look nice, which is quite impt. :)

I am not an expert but believe yes it will be slower. When you increase the rims size, the tyre width has to be increased as well. This also means that the surface of tyres in contact with ground has increased, hence the resistance. Everytime you start the wheels (at low speed) the car needs more effort. This can be significant for city driving.

 

Personally thinks it is a reasonable price to pay for the looks. [thumbsup]

I've changed from stock 13" to 15", and feels that difference being:

1) Cornering better, can go faster.

2) Uneven road condition can be transmitted to the steering wheel (i.e. more sensitive)

3) Fuel consumption decrease is rather minor.

4) Pick-up (acceleration) no change.

5) Emergency braking better.

my personal opinion is tat a plus one upgrade will be a pretty safe bet. meaning from 14, go to 15, 15 to 16 etc. anything more, yr turning in may be slower too though u may find handling improved. no need to worry abt wrong profile. just follow yr car manual, the tyre specs are there. for myself, ive upgraded to 16 from 15 and feel very slight diff in pickup, so don't matter. also it handles better and the ride is even better, due to tyre compound i guess. anything more and differences wud be more noticeable.

i think that weight of the rim will make a big impact on the pick up.. you change from from 15 to 16....same weight? what type of rim?

hi octopus, did u trade in ur 13" rims then for buying ur existing rims at $250?

 

u remember which shop at bt batok enterpise building? thinking of upgrading to 15" too

type of rim meaning that is it iron cast or forged rims and also brand...stock sports rims is not so heavy also....my stock is not alloy rims...

Not sure if its considered as 'trade-in', but I left my old 175/70R13 tyres and steel rims at the tyre shop. The shop is at the 2nd floor in Enterprise Building, the first tyre shop after coming up the ram. Good thing is that they offer free tyre rotation c/w balancing the pair going from rear to front every 10k km.thumbsup.gif Already rotated mine (FOC) at 8k km.

 

My brother got his sets of G-force Sport (195/50/R15) at another tyre shop also in Enterprise Building at $75/pc. I think the pricing in this tyre shop is rather competitive. sly.gif

in fact, the 16 i changed to is abit heavier. i duno wat kinda rim, i suppose its sports rims? how define sports rims? btw, i read abit on rims weight and it was suggested that theres abit too much emphasis on rim weight affecting acceleration. it may not necessarily be true. if i can find the thread, will post it here.

cos some rims are cast made...some are forged....thier process of making is different...forged rims are stronger and lighter thus more ex....
