How does a ping feel like?

Simple, you can experiemnt with a car cw distributor , just have to pump in the highest octane fuel available. Start the engine, release the distributor holding screw/bolt, use a timing light to check the timing and advance the timing as far as you can go. From here increase the engine speed, you should be able to pinning sound.

PS Any engine damage due to this simple experiment is only you own doing - don't try to sue the writer.

yup, tried higher octane fuel, doesn't help. anyway i am not suspecting my problem is due to pinging. i asked the pinging simply to familiarise with what a ping should be and how to look out for it.

my problem is a little more puzzling (and also drifting off-topic) but today i pulled my error code from the ECU and it the daihatsu workshop guy said something like communication problem between "EFI and auto gearbox computer".

it can happen even if i rev in neutral (auto trans) from idle to redline and release. the check engine light comes on again. i'm suspecting unichip may have REMOVED my rev limiter, which isn't what i want. if there is a rev limiter removal, i'd want to put it back ... dun see any benefit of removing rev limiter unless some die-hard racer wants to maximise the engine at the cost of damage.

Sorry.... not too familair with the Unichip.... but I thought you just bumped up the boost? If so, I thought you just put in a boost controller only.....

So you actually did tuning as well?

when the engine pings, what do you experience? i'm trying to figure out if i've pinging.

i read that it's a "high pitched sound". in that case, you won't feel any vibrations etc? it's just a matter of listening?

i also read that it's related to engine speed. that means we have to rev through different speeds and check for pinging? also, is it load dependent? if it's load-independent, i could set to neutral and rev and listen. if it's load dependent i have to run the car and listen, and while running it'll be more difficult to listen due to road noise.

is it like the sound of 2 pieces of metal knocking together?

the sound is like..... ppl playing mahjong in the middle of the night.... [cool]

my car ('91 Presea) also experiences pinging when trying to accelerate in a gear too high. however if i rev in the lower gear first before up-shifting, no such prob.

any idea wat kinda damage pinging will cause? or it's harmless?

u mean OBD2 fault codes are same for all models? oh, well that's the kind of service daihatsu gives, real crap. my fren help me bring down to pull fault code and i asked him to get them to write it down clearly so that we can countercheck. they couldn't be bothered, they just told us "roughly" what the code was. i had to call again to get them to tell us exactly what it was. from "problem with engine communicating with auto gearbox" .. upon further asking, changed to "EFI communicating with auto gearbox" ...

if the code number is of any meaning to you, i'll call them again and get the code number from the horses' mouth. thanks!

btw, ya tuned unichip with max, and turbo module from unichip as well.

yup, just called them. they said "P 1602".

Yes OBD2 Fault code is almost standard for most cars with 16 pin diagnostic socket.Only very minute difference in emission standard. Over in Europe they have the OBD2 similar standard call EOBD. Click for more details

Looks like your transmission module may have loss is default setting and therefore unable to communicate with the on-board computer which monitor engine speeds etc.

> Looks like your transmission module may have loss is default setting

how might such a situation (the loss) have happened?

by putting in a unichip, it would sometimes result in the loss?

is this transmission module located at the ECU (glove compartment) also, or it's somewhere else?

thanks!

No fix and fast rule on module location. For example Jaguar have about 8 modules all serial link to the main on-baord computer just like a local network ( know as Controller Area Network )

Pinging sounds like a bicycle chain slipping the crank gears [:/] Typically happens when you floor the accelerator [:p]

my engine pings when i step the accelerator too hard or never rev high enuff on the lower gear :(

any damage will result from ping?

im driving a '91 Presea.

thanks for your help :)
